  1. What's the name for Methylated Spirits??
    Created by: Paul (paulkristy@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Wed 26 May, 11:28 Gumly Gumly Standard Time]

Thanks for the info, just looking for 3 more countries. Can
anyone help?? I've included the ones I now know in case
    anyone else is interested.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Hi,
I am cycling around Northern Europe in June/July. I
will be using a Trangia stove which burns alcohol fuel. In
the past I've had trouble with purchasing it in non-english
countries. In Australia we use Methylated Spirits, but I
have used Fondue fuel very successfully. Can anyone tell me
the local word (or a brand name) for either of these in any
    of the following countries:
    Netherlands (spiritus)
    Germany
    Poland
    Finland
    Sweden (Rod sprit)
    Denmark (Trµsprit or husholdnings sprit)
Any help much appreciated. Please respond to my e-mail
    address if possible. Thanks, Paul
    Cheers, Paul

  3. Scotland Tips

    Hi Everyone,
I'm leaving for Scotland in less than a week and am
desperate for any last minute tips. I'll be camping,
hiking, driving, and going all over the place - but I'm on a
seriously TIGHT budget and would appreciate any money-saving
advice. Where can you camp in Scotland? Do you have to
pitch your tent at a caravan park or can you head into
the hills a bit and camp for free? Also - any great spots
that aren't plastered all over the guide books? Anything,
anything, anything... I'll be checking this daily until my
    flight.
    Thanks so much

hey - this is an email for anybody who wants a free
one-way ticket from London to Paris on the chunnel/eurostar.
It's for an under-26 year old, but there's no name on it so
anyone can use it. It's for June 19th, and I bought it in
Europe so I can't change the date in the U.S. (where I am).
Anyway, It seems stupid to let it go to waste, and is
worth US$50 so it's up for grabs to anybody who wants it.

Cheesy title I know, but classic really. I'm heading to Switzerland from Pamplona in July (after the running of the bulls) and from there through Italy to Greece. I need some help deciding where to go and what to see over a 6-8 week period. I am budgeting, so hostels and pensions - have done camping in Europe and I like a mattress! I'm interested in everything, but seeing as though it will be peak season I would like to find smaller places to stay (Amalfi coast??) where people are friendly and there are smaller queues. If anyone has been to Cesky Krumlov in Czech Republic you'll know what I like. I will have to go to Rome (of course) but other than that I'm not too keen on major cities. Thanks

  27. More on Iceland?
    Created by: Sor (Sor_FeS2@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 19:36 Gumly Gumly Standard Time]

Hi all again. Well I think it is definitely decided that
myself and my friend will be heading to Iceland in the
summer --- at least one if not both of the last two weeks in
July. Is it best to base ourselves in Reykjavik and travel
out to see things or is there somewhere more central that
would be better? Does anyone have any 'must-see'
attractions (though I think things like the geysirs and hot
springs are definitely on our list) or 'must-does' (like
going rafting or hiking or something?). Are there any
special holidays/events in the last two weeks in July?
I think we are going to try to plan things we would like to
see or do but only organise them when we get there. Is it
easy enough to do this? I've heard that transport is
expensive, but how widespread is the bus service? Would we
be able to get to most things by bus? Or what is the best
    way to get around?
    Thanks again for you help.

Am looking for assistance in evaluating the following hotels in Barcelona: Hotel Jardi, Hotel Toledano, and Hotel Residencia Neutral. Would very much appreciate one's assessments as to the pros and cons of any or all of these places. Particularly interested in neighborhood security, proximity to metro station and local attractions. Many thanks for your responses.

Can anyone give us an idea? Cheers! Obrigado!

  48. HI Hostels in Italy
    Created by: KD
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 2:41 Gumly Gumly Standard Time]

Just wanted to voice some concerns over the HI hostels in
parts of Italy. Both the hostels in Rome and Florence were
difficult to get into as a back packer as they were filled
with very young school children. In Florence, some of us
were put out into tents, had to wait in line 3 hours in the
morning to see if we could stay a second night, or turned
away in lieu of ten year olds! I must say that I was
extremely disappointed and did not expect this was what
    Hostelling International was all about.
All of the HI hostels in Italy that I have encountered will
not take reservations, so be warned and do not just show up!
You will end up travelling out of your way for nothing!
Has anyone else had these experiences and will I run into
the same problem in other Western European countries?
On the flip side, I just wanted to say that the HI hostel
in Agerola in the Amalfi coast and it was a real charm!
The hosts were wonderful and it was such a peaceful
    surrounding.
    Comments please.

Is it possible to get a work permit from within Britain.
i.e. during this visit? we do not want to prejudice future

In London there is an agency, named Meeting Point, with
italian branches, named Easy London, apparently offering
travels, room rent and temporary jobs in England.
This agency was founded by two italian fascists, Massimo
Morsello and Roberto Fiore, having some contacts with the
local intelligence, the Mi6, and its true activity isn't
    clear.
In Italy these guys have founded naziskin groups and other
nazi organizations: avoid and boycott, if possible, both
Meeting Point and Easy London, your money will be likely
    used to support fascist organizations!

    Hi,
I realise that this question may have been asked quite often
over the last few months, however, many of the responses
that I have read stemmed from info from last year. Hence,
has any one out there been to Rome within the last two
months? If there is, and they are willing, I would be most
grateful if they could outline what has been affected by
this Year 2000 Jubilee business, and to what extent. I have
heard that, beside St Peter's, also affected have been San
Giovanni in Laterano, Santa Maria Maggiore and the Forum.
Is this true? What about elsewhere?
I would be most grateful for any info, as I will be there
shortly but am wondering if I should look more to the
surrounding area - eg Tivoli, Ostia Antica etc rather than
    the city itself

I will be working in the U.K. (either London or Liverpool)
    this summer beginning in August.
I have heard it is a good idea to start a job search before
going over and that way I could see what opportunities there
are in my potential cities before hand.
Anyone know of websites for temp agencies or other job
sites? I have heard mentioned here a few times something
called TNT. Anyone have the URL address?
What would consitute as cheap rent in London? And where in
London (within reason) would I find these prices?
I had posted some time ago about switching my plans from
Ireland to the U.K. and I appreciate all the good advice I
    got.
Is Liverpool a good spot? Any other cities in England to
    consider?
I anticipate having to work in a pub or restaurant but I
would like to be in a position to grab a better opportunity
if one comes up. Is Liverpool a center for business in
England? I realize London is THE place....But the rent
might be prevent me from actually seeing any of the country
so I am looking to compromise.

I am travelling to the UK in July with a couple of mates and we are planing to go from London up to Scotland, across to Sth Ireland back to wales and pretty well straight back to London. Our route is unknowen as yet but will go where ever we feel like as the days go by. Could any one please tell us of any really great pubs around the UK that people have been to that was really happening with lots of young people there for us to get to know, maybe college pubs and sporting team pubs, as well as those great little out of the way pubs that are really old with great atmosphere. Don't get me wrong we are not wanting to do a pub crawl around the UK but at the same time we do enjoy the odd beer or two along the way. I find the Pubs from my last visit in the UK to be the nicest in the world and I would not want to miss out on any that were really worth checking out. Please leave a posting if you know of any such places from past travels or you maybe a local to a good establishment. Thankyou to who ever can help

clothes as I travel) I'll be in Norway mid-summer. What
names do the used places go by there? Is there Salvation
Army, etc. Are they listed in the Yellow Pages (Do they
have Yellow Pages?) Do people have garage sales? I know
this might sound like a odd line of thinking, but it's a

  140. If you're going to Scotland this summer
    Created by: Lori
[Timestamp: Thu 20 May, 23:21 Gumly Gumly Standard Time]

I just returned from a fantastic (albeit too short) holiday and have a couple of tips.
First, wherever it fits into your itinerary, stay in the hostels run by "Scotland's Top Hostels" - I've had two trips now to compare and they are definitely the best! (They have hostels in Glasgow, summer only; Fort William, Inverness, Oban, Skye, and three in Edinburgh) I was delighted to find on this trip that for just a little more than I'd spend on coin laundry, these hostels have a full laundry service - you drop off your bag of dirty stuff in the evening and it's washed, dried, and folded for you by 7 am. Well worth the slight extra expense!
Also, if you're still debating on itinerary, GO TO SKYE!!! I went this time and couldn't believe I hadn't gone before. And if you go to Skye, take "Nick's Tour" from Kyleakin. It's well worth it, as Nick made everyone feel like we were just some friends that he was showing around - the tour was totally flexible and we saw all kinds of cool things that we might not have found otherwise.
Also, if you're spending your whole trip (or a significant portion of it) in Scotland, I found that the 'Freedom of Scotland' travelpass was a great value, as it included most ferries and also bus routes in areas where trains don't run.
    Happy travelling!

Does anyone have any good advice or things I must see/do

I am willing to do manual labor I'd just like to be able to

Most of the nights I hope to sleep in my tent at campings,

My companion must aged between 22 and 28, preferable a

TAKE THE TRAIN. The train went everywhere we wanted to go
and in the 2 instances that the train didn't work it was
then that we used our 2 car rental days. It was so nice to
travel from Interlaken Switz. to Innsbruck Austria (approx.
9 hours) in the train. Instead of struggling over the
mountains with maps, gas stations, and the like, we were
relaxing in first class comfort, sleeping, reading, and
relaxing the day away. If you have any specific questions

I have a question to you travellers......... I have been reading these pages for a while, and I like answering questions about Norway. But I have noticed that not many people go to Norway compared to other countries. Why is it that most people go to either Sweden or Denmark when they are visiting Scandinavia? It seem to me that Norway is last on the list when choosing between the scandinavian countries. I realize that Norway is an expensive country to visit, but it is not more expensive than the other scandinavian countries.
Take a look at these links about Norway, and see if you are convinced. Norway is one of the most beautiful countries in the world........

I will be travelling to spain in late august and am in the
midst of an info collect session. Ideally I will surface
to barcelona from london by train, then down to valencia to
the la tomatina festival (occuring on the last wednesday of
august) the info i need for this leg of journey are
    1) Cost to purchase rail ticket from london to barcelona.
    And frequency (if you know)
2)accomodation, any recommendation out there for budget
accomodation and whether I would need to book in advance
    especially in barcelona. Thank you.

Hi. I am going to Spain in July for at least one month. I
don't want to see everything, just a lot of time in a few
nice places. I am interested in the south and the islands
off the coast. If anyone has stayed in this region please
tell me good accomodation etc, or good places to see,
    especially beaches.
Any ideas on just how hot it will be??
    Thanks in advance.

Would it be a cool place to live or would I get board of it after a little while.

My wife, 2 kids (2.5 yrs and 7 months) and I are travelling
to Helsinki (4days), Stockholm (4 days), Copenhagen (4days)
    and Norway (8 days).
As we are travelling with kids, we don't plan to stay in

moderately priced hotels/pensions/b&bs in the heart of the
    cities we are visiting.
In Norway, we would like to see Oslo and Bergen and if
possible go up to Arctic circle. is that possible in 8
days? How cold is Arctic circle in the first week of July?
    Thanks.

I'll be travelling around western Norway this summer. For
some reason the travelguides and phrase books forget to
    mention about ATM's.
So: how is an ATM called in Norway? How do I say "Could you
please tell me where to find an ATM?" (or at least do a
    good effort?)
Can I expect to find one in (allmost) every village/city?
As an alternative, can I use my VISA-card to pay at shops
    (supermarkets/petrol stations)?
Or is the situation more or less the same as in Iceland
(got no problems there finding ATM's and/or using my VISA)?
    Thnx in advance.

  209. A pub lunch in London: info
    Created by: Ben Haines (benhaines@aapi.co.uk)
[Timestamp: Mon 17 May, 5:42 Gumly Gumly Standard Time]

Yesterday I found another pub that serves a good lunch.
Indeed, this one is excellent, right up to Founders Arms
standards. The Shakespeare, on Goswell Street, is half a
mile north of St Paul's Cathedral, a quarter mile north of
the Museum of London, and a hundred yards north of Barbican
tube station. Mondays to Saturdays it serves both lunch
from noon to 2.30 and supper until 8.30. The pub accepts
children for meals. My roast pork, roast potatoes,
Yorkshire pudding and three vegetables cost six pounds.
They have four or five beers from the pump (though I'm
afraid one of those is Courage). Apple pie and ice cream
    was two pounds.
The pork was all it should be and came with freshly made
apple sauce, and the vegetables were freshly cooked, not
overcooked, the cauliflower suitably cheesed, and not a
frozen carrot in sight. They had the wrong kind of apple in
the pie (not a Bramley), but had spiced it well, and the
    pastry was good.
I know a handful of other pubs that are good for meals,
though mostly weekday lunches only, and shall gladly list
them if you ask me to.
    Ben Haines, London

  221. Another Cell Phone Inquiry
    Created by: Tony
[Timestamp: Fri 14 May, 12:58 Gumly Gumly Standard Time]

My parents want me to bring a cell phone with me on my
backpacking trip this summer. They want me to have it just
in case there is an emergency and they need to reach me. I
would really prefer to NOT bring one. I think that there
is a much better chance of the phone making me a target for
unwanted attention and possible theft than there is of a
    real emergency occuring.
    .
I expect that the only time that it'll be used is if my
parents call to see what I'm up to (since I'd only phone
them on a pay phone due to the cost). I do intend to go to
some smaller towns on my trip, but I'm certain that there
will be phones for me to use (France/Spain/Portugal/Italy/
Greece/Switz/Germany). I'm not complaining about the
sentiment, but I'd hate to have the thing ring if I'm in a
quiet restaurant or a church. Plus I'll have to bring it
to the beach or worry about leaving it at the hostel.
Also, I'd have to charge the thing every day or two which
means that I can't hide it away in my pack.
    .
So am I just being a suck or are my worries justified?
    What do you think?
    If it makes a difference, I'm a 23y.o. Canadian who's done
a lot of travelling before and I've always contacted my
parents on a regular basis before.

I will be backpacking Europe this summer for 3-4 months. I
am having a dificult time deciding what size backpack I
should buy. I want to travel as light as possible...max 2
changes of cloths, you know...the bare minimum. I've decided
to get some type of technical internal frame pack, such as
the Lowe Alpine Contour 50 (3000 cu.in.) that is very
comfortable to carry (I plan on doing lots of walking) and
might possibly fit within carry-on regulations. The pack I
buy will also be used for mountaineering when I get back.
    Should I go for a larger 3600-4000 cu.in. pack so I can
carry a sleeping bag and more junk? I'd like to pach my crap
in a 2400 cu.in. bag, but this is probably unreasonable. Any
minimalist backpackers out there? Oh, yeah...I'd like to
spend less than $100, of course.
    Thanks!..................

Europe (France or Holland, to be specific)? I might be
traveling to europe and staying for a couple of months at a
time and was thinking of bringing my cats, but is it even
possible? is it a bad headache? quarantines?
i would very much like to hear everyone's experiences!
    thanks!

  239. Lonely Planet Guides are best, but..
    Created by: Mike (info@footloosetravel.com)
[Timestamp: Tue 9 Feb, 2:24 Gumly Gumly Standard Time]

Although I do feel Lonely Planet guides are the best
overall, a couple of points need to be made. Why does
Lonely Planet not include Prague in the Western European
edition? OK, I know Prague is defined as in Eastern Europe
(although I'm not sure who make this decision), but for
many travelers, this city is a must. To get around this
problem, I suggest you get the Western European edition and
Xerox the Prague section from a book in your friendly
library. Another point, why is Italian not included in the
Western European phrasebook? I suppose you could buy two
books, but I'm cheap. Another point about guidebooks, don't
be fooled by the year on the book. Let's Go for example
pushes its books out quickly (for marketing reasons). Have
you ever compared 1998 to 1999? Not much difference. I have
tried accomodations or restaurant suggestions through such
books and on occasion (too many for me) the establishement
had been closed for 5 years or more. After 10 years of
pounding the pavement in Europe, Lonely Planet gets my vote
for the best researched guidebook on the market. Think
about it, it is just not possible to update all the
information in a guidebook consisting of 900 plus pages in
one year. I am not saying Let's Go is not a good book. I do
like the way it is organized (especially the country
specific books), but from my experience, Lonely Planet does
it right. What do you think?

  240. What are you Europeans doing???
    Created by: Brian
[Timestamp: Tue 12 Jan, 6:20 Gumly Gumly Standard Time]

Why, especially the British and French allowing so many
third-world immigrants into your countries. Other countries
in Western Europe are doing it too. Don't you know what is
going to happen to your society??? If you ever visit the US,
you will notice that crime and poverty are most severe in
non-white parts of the country. Despite a few minor problems
I have always been safe in these parts. However, the more
thirdworlders there is around the more risky the area gets.
Also, heterogeneous societies do not function as well as
homogenous societies. Learn the leason from us, epsecialial
about third world immigrants. Have neighborhoods already
been formed in Europe, where minorities are now the
majority??? BAN ALL FORMS OF THIRD WORLD IMMIGRATION TO YOUR
COUNTRIES. This might sound a bit racist, but it is only to
warn you. In my country, black people are 10 times as likely
to commit a homicide as a white person. I am no skin-head or
Neo-Nazi, but the statistics are available for all to see.
In fact, you do not even need statistics. Just come to the
US for yourself, if you don't believe. You will see that the
darker the people, the more dangerous it is. Please, watch
out who is in your countries. You might think that some
areas that are mostly European in Europe are bad, but
believe me, those areas are nothing compared to what would
happen to your societies, if you keep on letting more and
    more third world immigrants in.

    Hi all,
Just 'cause I love to see those 50-post long threads where
people try to objectively answer a subjective question,
    here's a little fire-cracker to stir the shit... :)
    .
What is the SEXIEST ACCENT in the world? The one that makes
your knees buckle, your wallet spontaneously combust, and
puts the animal portion of your brain into overdrive???
    .
PS. Votes will be tabulated at the end. The winning country
will be the first visit on my next trip...
