we are going to Ireland for 5 days, would it be cheaper to
hire a car in Ireland or best to pay through a travel agent
from Australia before we leave?

My experience from last year was that it was much cheaper
to book before we left Australia. We booked it through one
of the Airline brochures. shop around because there were
large price differences between agents. Look out for
specials for longer bookings (eg 1 week was cheaper than 5
days) and also off-peak, ie not July or August. Try also
the Irish Tourist Authority in Sydney - plenty of
    brochures, etc.

thanks mpoll.I'm from Western Australia do they have an
Irish Tourist Authority here that I could enquire about car
rental, also what about YHA could they help with this type
    of information?

I Don't know if the Irish Toursit Board has an office in
Perth, but you could try the Sydney office (02) 9299 6177
and ask them to send you some info. I don't know about the
YHA, but I assume their travel agencies also have info.
Another option is to surf the web to find some Irish car
    rental agencies directly.
As a guide we booked an AVIS car through the British
Airways Europe brochure last September for about A$380 for
the week. It costs more in July/August and more (per day)
    for shorter rentals.

Just be aware if doing things on the 'net, to find out where
the car can go. eg some coys don't allow you to go to Nthn
Ireland; and, cars from london - some aren't allowed to go
    into Ireland
