I just returned from a fantastic (albeit too short) holiday and have a couple of tips.
First, wherever it fits into your itinerary, stay in the hostels run by "Scotland's Top Hostels" - I've had two trips now to compare and they are definitely the best! (They have hostels in Glasgow, summer only; Fort William, Inverness, Oban, Skye, and three in Edinburgh) I was delighted to find on this trip that for just a little more than I'd spend on coin laundry, these hostels have a full laundry service - you drop off your bag of dirty stuff in the evening and it's washed, dried, and folded for you by 7 am. Well worth the slight extra expense!
Also, if you're still debating on itinerary, GO TO SKYE!!! I went this time and couldn't believe I hadn't gone before. And if you go to Skye, take "Nick's Tour" from Kyleakin. It's well worth it, as Nick made everyone feel like we were just some friends that he was showing around - the tour was totally flexible and we saw all kinds of cool things that we might not have found otherwise.
Also, if you're spending your whole trip (or a significant portion of it) in Scotland, I found that the 'Freedom of Scotland' travelpass was a great value, as it included most ferries and also bus routes in areas where trains don't run.
Happy travelling!

Hi Lori - Any ideas about Scotland in Winter? I'm going to
the UK in November this year and would LOVE to go to
Scotland yet am unsure if it would be advisable, especially
in the highlands where it might be a bit difficult,
especially as I'll have to rely on buses. Thanks for your
advice.
