I am taking my 10 yr old son to Germany next wk for about 5
days (standby ticket.) Landing in Frankurt and staying in a
small town nearby. Does anyone have some good ideas for day
trips by train or places (reasonable) for an overnight stay.
We prefer somewhat quiet and scenic (small towns) that are
easily accesible by public transport. I have backpacked
extensively in Asia but Europe is new to me! Is there
anywhere just into France or Switzerland that would be a
neat choice? We're totally flexible but won't have a rail
pass. How best to purch the rail tickets? Any advice and
ideas much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Heidelberg is a perfect day trip from Frankfurt. You will
love it ! Buy the ticket at the main station in Frankfurt
or at any other train station you come across.
Another choice is Rⁿdesheim on the Rhine River. Foreign
Tourists seem to love the place and it is very picturesque,
too.
If you're in for something less touristy, go to
Aschaffenburg, see the castle and Pompeian Villa and Park.
You might be able to take a river cruise on the Main river
there. Call the Frankfurt Tourist Office for more
information on that.
Seligenstadt is a beautiful old town, too. Or turn to the
Taunus Hills. Kronberg is beautiful. Bad Homburg has a nice
park with a Russian chapel and a Thai Temple and Mineral
Springs. Near Bad Homburg there is the "Hessenpark", an old
farmers village rebuilt. And the "Saalburg", a Roman
castello with a very worthwhile museum (displaying roman
sandals and other things, your son will love that !).
Call the Bad Homburg Tourist Office for that.
Enjoy your stay !
