Hi all again. Well I think it is definitely decided that
myself and my friend will be heading to Iceland in the
summer --- at least one if not both of the last two weeks in
July. Is it best to base ourselves in Reykjavik and travel
out to see things or is there somewhere more central that
would be better? Does anyone have any 'must-see'
attractions (though I think things like the geysirs and hot
springs are definitely on our list) or 'must-does' (like
going rafting or hiking or something?). Are there any
special holidays/events in the last two weeks in July?
I think we are going to try to plan things we would like to
see or do but only organise them when we get there. Is it
easy enough to do this? I've heard that transport is
expensive, but how widespread is the bus service? Would we
be able to get to most things by bus? Or what is the best
way to get around?
Thanks again for you help.

Bus service is good in thesummer - actually VERY good for a
300.000 inhabitant country where everybody seems to have a
car, but it is still a slow way of getting around.
Can not think of anything more "central", but have you
considered to buy a bus pass and travel all the way around
Iceland?
Given only one or 2 weeks in Iceland, a bus pass is a bit
overdone. Unless you spent your entire holiday in the bus.
Otherwise it's just to expensive.
Ask BSI for a bus/travel brochure (e-mail: travel@bsi.is).
This brochure contains an overview of all bus-lines, prices
and lot's of idea's!
It's quite easy to organize your trips in Iceland,
especially in Reykjavik at the BSI bus terminal.
Definitive must-do's in Iceland (as far as I'm concerned):
- Thingvellir
- Gullfoss / Geysir (consider camping at Geysir for at
least one night)
- Landmannaluagar (a day tour from Reykjavik is possible,
but gives not enough time to enoy the sights); consider the
hike landmannalaugar - Thorsmork (5/6 days)
- The Thorsmork - Skogar hike (2 days) although you could
also do a day-hike at Skogar
- Skaftafell national park (try to get on a guided tour to
the eruption-site ('96 & '98) on the glacier
Enjoy your stay!
