I will be travelling to spain in late august and am in the
midst of an info collect session. Ideally I will surface
to barcelona from london by train, then down to valencia to
the la tomatina festival (occuring on the last wednesday of
august) the info i need for this leg of journey are
1) Cost to purchase rail ticket from london to barcelona.
And frequency (if you know)
2)accomodation, any recommendation out there for budget
accomodation and whether I would need to book in advance
especially in barcelona. Thank you.

I don't know about your specific trip, but I went from Paris
to Madrid, and it cost me several hundered francs on top of
my Eurail pass, and took all day (ie from dawn to the dead of
night). I looked into paying for my ticket and nearly had a
heart attack. If you are paying for your ticket from London,
it may even be cheaper to look into flights with someone like
British Midlands. If they have a good deal running, it may
be cheaper and (obviously) quicker to fly. Spanish trains in
them selves are cheap but slow, as opposed to French trains
which are super fast, but tend to be expensive.

Thanks for your reply Kath, can I ask why you had to pay
extra on top of the eurail pass that you have? This will
be my first trip to europe and i had always thought
(haven't looked into it yet) that eurail will cover most
    distance within the region.

I would also suggest that you fly from London to Barcelona,
the traub trip is long and tedious, changing at Dover for
the ferry, again in Paris and again at the border...it
takes forever and costs as much as a flight if you're
paying without eurail. As for the extra, lots of trains
throughout europe charge you a supplement, this can be
anywhere from a couple of dollars in the east to thirty
bucks in the west...if you look at the ticket it specifies
that you may have to pay these sometimes. From Barcelona
to Valencia is approx. 4000 ptas or $25 US and takes 5h. I
think. Have a great trip whatever you decide to do...
Barcelona is great, stay in El Raval if you are looking for
cheap hostals and are not worried about some colorful
characters...otherwise stay at the Hostal Jardi in Placa
del Pi, it's in the center of town, nice and relatively
    cheap...
