Thanks guys for your suggestions on Spain and Portugal. I've decided to start in Barcelona and then travel on from there to suggested places and I guess whatever takes my fancy on the way. I think I'll be travelling by train and buying my tickets as I go. I'm on a tight budget so can anyone give me a rough idea on train prices and will I save money by getting sleepers for longer journeys and travelling overnight? What if I sleep past my stop? Has this happend to anyone?

  1. Spanish Flexi-pass Added by:

buy one of these instead of point-to-point tickets - it's
cheaper and conductors neglect to mark your pass.

If you miss your stop, you just get your journal out and
write about it, then catch the next train back to where you
wish to be. If you are on a tight budget, I would go with a
couchette. It will cost about $17 US, but it will be worth
it and much safer. Taking an overnight train is an
efficient way to travel. For more train stuff see

Don't rule out buses - they are cheaper and sometimes
    faster.

Good point above. Sometimes buses are best and faster than
the train. Example...Segovia to Avila. Yes, you can get a
couchette with any pass or without a pass. It is a separate
transaction. Try to get your couchette 24 hours in advance
or earlier. Reservations are required on all overnight
trains in Spain. In some cases, you might be able to get a
bed once you are on the train, but I would reserve when you
    can.
