I will be backpacking in Western Europe for 10 weeks this
summmer on a Eurorail pass. I am considering skipping
Britian so that I don't have to get a different train pass
and to give me more time to relax in other countries. This
is my first tour of Europe, any advice on this? Also, is it
really necessary to bring a sleep sac? Takes up so much
room in a backpack. Thanks for your help!

Much as it pains me to say it (UK is gorgeous), I suggest
you skip Britain this time round. The UK is very expensive
and although small there is alot to see. London alone
deserves at least 4 or 5 days, scotland 10 days etc. STick
to Europe this time and see the UK some other time (and when
you have more money)

Skip the UK and make sure you don't miss the Scandinavian countries - summer's the best time of year visiting. If you need tips and hints, feel free to write.
In warm climate countries I've always managed with just a
wide (plenty of room to move) cotton sleeping sheet - a
regular sheet sewn up like a sleeping bag. Most hostels have
blankets if it gets a little chilly.
A tip for London if you do go there is Jordans youth hostel
way out of the centre at the end of the rail line (40 min
ride) but only $8/night and so friendly and quiet. It's in a
Quaker village (no alcohol allowed) and you sleep just 50
yards from Willian Penn's simple grave.
UK is great. Save it for another year if time is limited. So
much to see.
You really shouldn't consider a trip to Europe that doesn't
incude that beuatiful, magical island of Ireland, although
you could give the UK a miss.
The interrail pass for Europe covers Ireland, although I
think you have to be under 26 to qualify.
The brochures don't say so, but if you buy a youth Eurail
pass, all BritRail passes are 1/2 price. (It's some
special deal this year.) This definately makes the UK a
more affordable addition to your trip.
I think that the UK is perhaps more different from the rest
of Europe than the other countries of Europe are from one
another (or at least from their neighbours) - probably
because it's an island. So taken overall your trip might
have more variety if you included the UK, but there is an
awful lot to see if you want to do the place justice. But
it really depends what you're looking for and what the rest
of your itinery is like.
skip britain
you wouldn't have enough time in 10 weeks to see the place
and there are too many tourists anyway
