Hello all I will be in Europe at the time of the D-Day
anniversary and was wondering what the best places to see
are. If at all possible I would like to be somewhere near
a remembrance service so I can say thanks to the vets for
their efforts. I would also like to see some of the famous
sites any input as to which are the best to see and info
concerning b&bs in the area is most appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

If you get a chance in your travels, try to go to IEPAR or
YPRES in Belgium. Each evening 365 times a year the Last
Post is played and a service held at the MENIN GATE near the
town square. If your heritage is Aussie, Kiwi, Canadian or
English you cannot fail to be moved by the ceremony. The
traffic is stopped and quite a crowd turn up each evening.
    LEST WE FORGET

The Somme and Verdun are bound to both have very
moving services and if not, it is still well worth going anyway.
Other memorial sites worth visiting are Langemark - a
touching German graveyard, Passendale - memorial to the
Canadians, and Tynecot - to Aus, Kiwis and Brits. They are
all within close proximity to Ypres. Ypres also has a WW1
museum that is well worth checking out.
Basically the whole Western Front is dotted with memorials,
graveyards, battlefields and many places where you can
honour the memory of the young men who fought and died
    there.

I was actually in Paris last year on D-Day, at the Arc de
Triomphe (totally unaware of what day it was) and they had a
ceremony there. Vets paraded up the Champs-Elysees to the
Arc de Triomphe, where there was a ceremony. It wasn't
    huge, but moving.

The only place to be on D-Day is the Omaha Beach American
Military Cemetery. You will never forget it. Ypres and the
WW I Battlefields are impressive, but if you are going to be
in Europe on June 6, you need to be at Omaha Beach. This is
    where IT happened!

I must agree that Omaha Beach American Military Cemetery is
the obvious choice (well, for Americans I suppose - but
it's incredible for all). I just went and it is amazingly
    well done.
