I will be backpacking through Europe this summer and
staying in Hostels. I would appreciate a warning on any
bad hostels/cheap hotels you may have encountered. I'm not
partial to bed bugs or other small friends.
Thanks!
Jennifer

One to avoid is the official Youth hostel in Milan. It is
clean, but it's run like a prison/Kindergarten. Very
strict, closes way to early ,bad toilets, not signposted
etc, etc.
A youth hostel to avoid is 'The Backpacker' in Dublin,
Ireland. It's right around the corner from the excellent
and cheap hostel 'Isaac's.' No security, and you can't
even take a shit!
thanks for the info!
I welcome the info and the hostels to avoid. Where in
Germany and UK to stay away from and which one is safe, clean
and no curfews?
If you go to Brugges Belgium, AVOID the hostel that is called
something Snuggles Travel Inn, at all cost. It was a mess,
and the blankets stink.
In Interlaken we found the Sonnenhof Backpackers a wonderful
quiet hostel (www.villa.ch) but if you want lots of rowdy
young yanks Balmers is much better known.
In the UK we found all the YHA's wonderful.
Our only other hostel (family of five) was at Kortrijk in
Belgium which was large and austere but very clean and quite
friendly (although I may have been a little spoilt as I had
a fair chunk of the lingo). This was Sep/Oct 1998 by the
way.
Well, I stayed at Isaac's in Dublin and my recommendation
would be to stay away from the big room with 14 beds. It may
be cheap, but it stinks and is not a choice spot for an
adequate night's rest. Kinlay House in Galway was excellent
and close to everyting. Oxford Backpackers in that city was
pretty weak, filled with students who were actually living
there. I personally enjoy hostels filled with fellow
travellers. The YMCA in Bath, England was excellent as well
as the Hotel International(?) in Amsterdam. For an optimum
hostel experience, find rooms with a manageable number of
beds per room (2-6 in my opinion). It may cost a few more
bucks per night, but it's worth it.
