Has any one here been there?
I'm seriously thinking about going on a commercial trekking
holiday there. Is it worth the high cost or is it a lot like
a more expensive Iceland?

    Been there!
Svalbard is in some ways similar to Iceland, but even more
exotic. You are only 10 degrees south of the North Pole,
with multiple glaciers, polar bears (you must carry a rifle
wherever you go for protection) and other exotic animals,
and a landscape comparable to the moon. It's expensive, but
the fragile ecology makes mass tourism out of the question,
    causing the prices to rice.
Alternatively, you might be interested in taking university
classes at Svalbard (biology, geology, physics - summer
courses or one year studies). I did - an experience of a
    lifetime! Check www.unis.no
