there have been a few posts lately about being in times
square for 2000, so i thought this might be of interest. i
read a magazine article today saying that in a phone
interview, 40% of people thorughout the u.s. wanted to be
right there also. they are expecting well over a million
people just in the square, and every police officer in new
york will be on duty around the city. this might be more of
a horror than a party...

I will be going to NY this summer and I would like to know
what nightlife is there if you are under 21, can you into
any bars or clubs even if you don't drink? I like poetry and
cabaret, would I be allowed into places which do these
things.
I would be grateful for any information.

Looking to travel from Vancouver to Toronto one way in early
June. Anyone interested in a one-way ticket to Vancouver
from Toronto sometime in June, July, August who might want
to share a return ticket? One-way travel seems not to be too
economical. Any other suggestions on places to post look
for cheap ticket deals etc. (i.e. sites or info boards of
hostels in Toronto?)? Need to book soon, so please respond
ASAP. Thanks
P.S. I need this ticket for a female passenger.

Has anyone stayed at any of the following hotels? Perhaps
you could give me some advice as to whether they are
good/bad/ugly/convenient/clean/safe etc!
The New York Inn on 8th Ave, Malibu Studios Hotel on
Broadway or Quality Inn in Lyndhurst New Jersey. The
Quality Inn hotel told me it was only 20mins by bus into
Manhatten - can this be right? I dont want to be stuck on a
bus for 1.5hrs a day due to traffic. Any help is
appreciated as its taken me ages to find budget hotels
which are available on the dates I want! Thanks

I am interested in knowing your opinions on beaches in the
US on either the East Coast or Gulf of Mexico. I've got a
few days available to go for some surf/sun and don't know
where to begin looking for information on the beaches. I
have heard everything from Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach,
Hilton Head, Panama City, etc. I don't want to travel too
far south into Florida, as I'll be driving from Indiana and
haven't got the time. So, please share your beach
experiences. The ideal would be crystal blue water, decent
sand, with at least a little entertainment available
nearby. Thanks in advance.

This is a special reply for the posting "Going to Canada"
by Steph.....I think it says it all....at least by 1960's
standards....
...here's some 60's humour...oops..humor
"We've got many of fine attractions in the countryside so
pretty where the tourists can go and rubber neck
You can see live Torontonians commuting to the city
Or watch French Canadian separtists conspiring in Quebec
So, Come up to Canada, come up to Canada
your next door neighbour that is here to welcome you
You can drink our strong Canadian booze
See us in our igloos
We'll put the act on especially for you
We'll ask about your Uncle Sam and How ya' doin' in Vietnam
We're always glad to take you by the hand
Now 1967 should put Canada in orbit that's the year of our
centenial you know
And there'll be a flood of tourist, but we think we can
absorb it
And in 1968 we'll sit and count up all the dough
So, come up to Canada, come up to Canada
The young dominion where the snow's up to your knees
We've got tons and tons of Arctic air and scores of
Mounties everywhere
We'll be just as Canadian as you please
And we'll make darn sure your money doesn't freeze!!!!"
Says it all....

Okay, so this summer I've got a week in between flying into
Miami and then flying out again. I'll be with 3 mates and we
wanted a lazy time before jetting off to a hectic travel
schedule around California. The idea of scuba diving in Key
Largo and then on to Key West for partying and sunning was
the plan but is there anything else I should be doing? A
chilled out time that doesn't cost too much and with as
much time in the sun as possible is the objective. We
ruled out Miami 'cos we wanted to get away from citylife,
is that a good idea? Any suggestions anyone? Floridasailor
got any ideas as you seem to know the area.

Hello everyone!
Our summer holiday is approaching and this year weÆll spend
it in Western Canada!!! We organize and plan everything
ourselves, so weÆd appreciate some comments and suggestions
from connoisseurs and locals! We travel by rental car and
take camping equipment with us, but from time to time weÆd
like to stay in a reasonably priced motel, B&B or cabin as
well à Canada is vast and our time is limited, so hereÆs
what we managed to plan. Please help us if you have any
suggestions, hints on what to do, places to stay, little
known sights (such as ghost-towns etc.) along the way.
Day 1: landing in Edmonton in the late evening. Spend the
night near or on the airport to have a good nightÆs rest
after a long transatlantic flight.
Day 2: Collect the rental car in the morning. Drive to
Jasper.
Day 3: Spend the day in Jasper.
Day 4: Drive from Jasper to Cache Creek (BC), or somewhere
near. This is only meant to interrupt the long drive to our
next point of interest.
Day 5: Drive from Cache Creek to Whistler.
Day 6: Visit something in the Whistler area/ Garibaldi
Park. Any suggestions for a good (not too strenuous) hike
or an off-the-beaten-track place to visit?
Day 7: Drive from Whistler to Vancouver. Suggestions for
accommodation?
Day 8: Spend the day in Vancouver
Day 9: Take the ferry to Nanaimo and drive on to long Beach
or Ucluelet. By the way, is it necessary to book these
ferries in advance? ItÆs high season (July/August) after
all.
Day 10: visit this area. Maybe a long beach walk or boat
trip?
Day 11: Drive to Victoria.
Day 12: Visit Victoria
Day 13: Take the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver, and
drive on to Osoyoos.
Day 14: Explore the region between Osoyoos and Penticton.
WeÆre particularly interested in visiting wineries (and
tasting of course). Any suggestions?
Day 15: Driving from the Osoyoos area to Revelstoke NP.
Day 16: Visit Revelstoke and/or Glacier. Which one is most
worthwhile?
Day 17: Drive from Revelstoke to Yoho or Lake Louise.
Day 18: Visit region Yoho/Banff
Day 19: Visit region Yoho/Banff
Day 20: Drive along Icefields Parkway up north to Athabasca
Falls or Jasper.
Day 21: Stay in that region
Day 22: Drive back to Edmonton International Airport. Catch
our evening flight.
WeÆre looking forward to your comments, and of course even
more to the trip itself!
Thanks a lot!

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip driving from Canada
(Alberta) down the American west coast and then around
Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa
Rica, Panama, Belize, maybe South America too and then Back
to New York City. Our
plan is to drive the whole way and camp in our van where
possible. Taking about 6 to 9 months to do so depending
on
funds, weather, local atmosphere and how much time it
actually takes. Our van in equipt to camp with four
people,
so what we're looking for is another couple to join us
and
share costs for the trip or a few couples to join in for
different parts of the trip. We're both 23 I'm Canadain
and
she's British and have spent most of the past three
years
travelling. Neither of us smoke or use drugs but do not
care
if others do enjoy to do so as long as there capable of
respecting our choice not to. This trip is a few months
off
because we are still both in the planning and saving
stage
but would like to see if there is anyone interested in
joining us. We hope to start out from Canada sometime in
October 1999. If anyone is interested email me at the
address above or leave a post here.
I'd also like to hear from anyone who's done this trip
or
any part of it about the must and must not do's. Thank
you!

The Brits have peculiar words for many things. Money is
referred
to as "goolies" in slang, so you should for instance say
"I'd love to come to
the pub but I haven't got any goolies." "Quid" is the
modern word
for what was once called a "shilling" - the equivalent of
seventeen
cents American. If you are fond of someone, you should tell
him he is a "great
tosser" he will be touched. The English are a notoriously
demonstrative,
tactile people, and if you want to fit in you should hold
hands with your
acquaintances and tossers when you walk down the street.
Habits
Ever since their Tory government wholeheartedly embraced
full
union with Europe, the Brits have been attempting to adopt
certain
continental customs, such as the large midday meal followed
by a two or three hour
siesta, which they call a "wank." As this is still a fairly
new practice in
Britain,it is not uncommon for people to oversleep (alarm
clocks, alas, do not
work there due to the magnetic pull from Greenwich). If
you are late for supper, simply apologise and explain that
you
were having a wank - everyone will understand and forgive
you.
Universities
University archives and manuscript collections are still
governed by quaint medieval rules retained out of respect
for tradition; hence
patrons are expected to bring to the reading rooms their
own ink-pots and a
small knife for sharpening their quills. Observing these
customs will signal
to the librarians that you are "in the know"- one of the
inner circle,
as it were, for the rules are unwritten and not posted
anywhere in the library.
Likewise, it is customary to kiss the librarian on both
cheeks
when he/she brings a manuscript you've requested, a
practice dating back to
the reign of Henry VI.
One of the most delightful ways to spend an afternoon in
Oxford
or Cambridge is gliding gently down the river in one of
their flat-bottomed
boats, which you propel using a long pole. This is known as
"cottaging".
Many of the boats (called "yer-i-nals") are privately owned
by
the colleges, but there are some places that rent them to
the public by the
hour. Just tell a professor or policeman that you are
interested in doing
some cottaging and would like to know where the public
yerinals
are. The poles must be treated with vegetable oil to
protect them from
the water, so it's a good idea to buy a can of Crispo and
have it on you when
you ask directions to the yerinals. That way people will
know you are an
experienced cottager.
Food
British cuisine enjoys a well deserved reputation as the
most
sublime gastronomic pleasure available to man. Thanks to
today's robust
dollar, the American traveller can easily afford to dine
out several times a
week (rest assured that a British meal is worth
interrupting your afternoon
wank for).
Few foreigners are aware that there are several grades of
meat
in the UK. The best cuts of meat, like the best bottles of
gin, bear Her
Majesty's seal, called the British Stamp of Excellence
(BSE). When you go
to a fine restaurant, tell your waiter you want BSE beef
and won't settle
for anything less. If he balks at your request, custom
dictates that you jerk your
head imperiously back and forth while rolling your eyes to
show him
who is boss. Once the waiter realizes you are a person of
discriminating
taste, he may offer to let you peruse the restaurant's list
of exquisite
British wines. If he doesn't, you should order one anyway.
The best wine grapes
grow on the steep, chalky hillsides of Yorkshire and East
Anglia-try an Ely
'84 or Ripon '88 for a rare treat indeed. When the bill for
your meal comes
it will show a suggested amount. Pay whatever you think is
fair, unless you
plan to dine there again, in which case you should simply
walk out; the
restaurant host will understand that he should run a tab
for you.
Transportation
Public taxis are subsidized by the Her Majesty's
Government. A
taxi ride in London costs two pounds, no matter how far you
travel. If a taxi
driver tries to overcharge you, you should yell "I think
not, you
charlatan!", then grab the nearest policeman (bobby) and
have the driver
disciplined. It is rarely necessary to take a taxi, though,
since bus drivers are
required to make detours at patrons' requests. Just board
any bus, pay your
fare of thruppence (the heavy gold-colored coins are
"pence"), and
state your destination clearly to the driver, e.g. "Please
take
me to the British Library." A driver will frequently try
to have a bit
of harmless fun by pretending he doesn't go to your
requested destination.
Ignore him, as he is only teasing the American tourist
(little does he know
you're not so ignorant!). For those travelling on a
shoestring budget, the London Tube may
be the most economical way to get about, especially if you
are a woman.
Chivalry is alive and well in Britain, and ladies still
travel for free on the Tube.
Simply take some tokens from the baskets at the base of the
escalators or on the platforms; you will find one near any
of the state-sponsored Tube
musicians. Once on the platform, though, beware!
Approaching trains sometimes disturb the large Gappe bats
that
roost in the tunnels. The Gappes were smuggled into London
in the early 19th
century by French saboteurs and have proved impossible to
exterminate. The
announcement "Mind the Gappe!" is a signal that you should
grab your hair and
look towards the ceiling. Very few people have ever been
killed by
Gappes, though, and they are considered only a minor
drawback to an
otherwise excellent means of transportation.
One final note: for preferential treatment when you arrive
at Heathrow
airport, announce that you are a member of Shin Fane (an
international Jewish peace organization - the "shin" stands
for "shalom"). As
savvy travellers know, this little white lie will assure
you priority
treatment as you make your way through customs.

Here is the plan: I am planning to move, yes, to move, to
Vancouver from Toronto. But the dilemma is that I have a
few things I want to take with me. What is the best way to
transporting them across the county? Although I have a
driving license I don't have a car in Toronto. Is it
better to buy a $800 car that will just make it from T.O.
to Van or to rent one? Will the cost be the same? Any
alternative ideas to solve my little problem here? Cheers!

How is the market in Vancouver for jobs like bartender,
waiter or other similar kinds? I am going to hava a year
long holiday in Vancouver and probably go to UBC to study
there. How are the employers there? Are they as sexist,
racist and chauvinist as the rest of North America that you
have to be a blonde-haired,voluptuous babe to land a "job"
in a bar or a restaurant? Where is the hippy-yish pocket

in Toronto? Help needed, folks!

I am thinking of having an extended stay in the US. I can

But it will take more than a year. Can I go over there &

there for aussie nurses.
I don't know a lot about green cards. Are they issued for a
temporary amount of time or permanent? What benefits does
having a green card give me?
If you can help I would appreciate it. If you know of
anywhere I can find out more info that would also be good.
Thankyou.

I just made my reservations for a week in NYC - 4 days
before the New Year and 3 days after. I have never been to
NYC during a New Years celebration, but from a TV, and word
of mouth perspective it seems to be the best party on the
planet. I have also recently seen some bad press on NYC:
the shootings, the mayor protests, etc. I'm looking for
some HONEST LOCAL opinions on how crazy you think it will
get during the New Year celebrations. Will it be safe?
Can they really control all those people without pushing
people around? I'm not looking for police bashing, just
some advice on do's and donÆts. I just wan't to make sure
I have the best possible time.

I'm driving from Michigan to Colorado June 6-12. Is there
ANYTHING to do/cool hostel-type places to stay in: Illinois
(besides Chicago, of course!), Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, or
Nebraska? (Not too far from I-80 that is.)
I need something to break the monotony of 10 hours/day of

character than a Motel 6, but still cheap, that would be fab
as well.

Also, what about cheap accomodation and cool stuff to do in

Anyone know of good companies and nearby accomodation in
central Maine (Moosehead Lake region?)? What about other

Finally, I'm going to be driving this summer from San Fran

thinking of probably Mammoth Lakes area.

We have a flight to Oakland for this coming Memorial Day
Long weekend. To cut a long story short - our travel
partners (who know the area) bailed on us at the last
minute - they have a good excuse. We have a rental car
organised, and now just need to work out what to do for
three days in Northern Cal.
.
We've done the San Francisco thing before, and also Yosemite
a couple of times - so want to do something different. The
vineyards spring to mind as an option - any suggestions -
Napa Vs Sonoma???. And we heard that there are some
redwoods north of San Fran, but they are about 5 hours north
- so don't know if the drive is worth it (we have seen the
redwoods at Sequioa NP and Yosemite before). Can anyone
suggest a nice 3-day loop of things to see and do in this
area.
.
Also, originally we were going to be staying with relatives
of our travel partners, so now we have no accomodation
organised. Can anyone suggest a nice B&B along the way, or
some other quaint / reasonable accomodation (we're not
looking for 5-star, but wouldn't mind treating ourselves to
the right place). I realise that being a long weekend, we
probably have a good chance of being out of luck with
booking the accom this late. We have a friend in
Sacramento, so might be able to crash a night with them if
our travels take us that way.
.
Thanks!

Also does anyone have an opinion on the Banana Bungalow, they seem pretty good, but is there a better hostel in the area?, I will be there for 3 days.

Hi, I am a Kiwi considering moving to Canada for a working
holiday, in which time I would love to work a ski season. I
want to avoid Whistler/ Blackcomb- was thinking about
Banff/Lake Louise/ Panorama. Could anybody give me some info
about these resorts or perhaps some better options?
What is the ski town lifestyle like in Canada? I have just
returned downunder from working in Winterpark Colorado and
had a fantastic time, I am assuming that Canada will be just
as great, if not better?! any comments/advice would be
really appreciated...likewise if I can help out with info on

Obviously New York around then is going to be mayhem to

in New York at the moment could reccommend a good place to
stay which is in the heart of the action (and send me the

solution to my problem. If so could they email me a.s.a.p.

Hi, we are two Aussie girls (early 30's) who are planning a
trip to the US in December. We have no plans as yet and are
contemplating a flight direct to L.A. We would then like
information on driving accross to the East Coat. Is this
possible to do in just over a week and still see lots of
sights. We only have two weeks break and would like to see
Disney Land, San Francisco, The Grand Canyon, Texas,
Washington and New York City. We realise that our time in
each place will be brief but we have been saving for this
trip for a very long time and just can't wait any longer.
Does anyone have any tips on how we should tackle this trip.
Travel Agents over here don't seem very positive or keen to
help us with our plans. Any advice on transport, routes or
additional places to visit would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

We are staying at the hotel LaSalle the 4th of July weekend. Does anybody know what this hotel is like? Is this a good place to stay at in New Orleans?
We are also going to drive a scenic byway from New Orleans to Houston. It looks like there is a lot to see if we drive Houma - Thibodaux - Morgan City - New Iberia - Lafayette - Abbeville - and then along the Gulf of Mexico. Does anyone know of this area? Is this worth using time on or is it better to drive the highway ?

The Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to
buy our
land. How can you buy or sell the sky - the warmth of the
land? The idea
is strange to us. Yet we do not own the freshness of the
air or the sparkle
of the water. How can you buy them from us? Every part of
this earth is
sacred to my people. Every shiny pine needle, every sandy
shore, every
mist in the dark woods, every clearing and humming insect
is holy in
the memory and experience of my people.
We know that white man does not understand our ways. One
portion of
the land is the same to him as the next, for he is a
stranger who comes
in the night and takes from the land whatever he needs. The
earth is not
his brother but his enemy, and when he has conquered it he
moves on.
He leaves his father's graves, and his children's
birthright is forgotten.
There is no quiet place in the white man's cities. No place
to hear the
leaves of spring or the rustle of insect wings. But perhaps
because I am
savage and do not understand - the clatter only seems to
insult the ears.
And what is there to life if a man cannot hear the lovely
cry of the
whippoorwill or the arguments of the frog around the pond
at night?

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip driving from Canada
(Alberta) down the American west coast and then around
Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa
Rica, Panama, Belize and then Back to New York City. Our
plan is to drive the whole way and camp in our van where
possible. Taking about 6 to 9 months to do so depending on
funds, weather, local atmosphere and how much time it
actually takes. Our van in equipt to camp with four people,
so what we're looking for is another couple to join us and
share costs for the trip or a few couples to join in for
different parts of the trip. We're both 23 I'm Canadain and
she's British and have spent most of the past three years
travelling. Neither of us smoke or use drugs but do not care
if others do enjoy to do so as long as there capable of
respecting our choice not to. This trip is a few months off
because we are still both in the planning and saving stage
but would like to see if there is anyone interested in
joining us. We hope to start out from Canada sometime in
October 1999. If anyone is interested email me at the
address above or leave a post here.
I'd also like to hear from anyone who's done this trip or
any part of it about the must and must not do's. Thank you!

OK, first up; if you don't like house
music/electronica/techno parties and nightclubs (and
travelling as well), you may as well skip this message.
If you do, then read on, my friend........

I have recently started the above Yahoo club, called The
Global Dancefloor; it's basically a place for people to meet
and exchange info on where the best parties, nightclubs and
dance music/electronica scenes are around the world.
There is a message board, a chat room, links and photo
albums - and since the club was formed, a couple of days
ago, it has moved steadily up the chart of most popular
clubs in the Music>DJs section. If you decide to join up,
please feel free to invite any likeminded friends. See what
you think, anyway.......

The question is where?
Options are:
1. Cancun
2. Puerto Vallarta
3. Zihuantanejo
The criteria are:
1. Sun/Beach
2. Relax
3. Ancient Ruins
4. Activities/Nightlife
I have heard so many differing opinions. Any suggestions on
destination and how to do it affordably?

I posted a message yesterday inquiring about living
expenses in NYC or Washington, DC. Thanx to all who
answered... the info you've given me is great. But I was
thinking Manhattan would be extremely expensive. Would it
be cheaper to live in another part of town? If I get a bus
pass I figure it doesn't matter much. I'm DEFINITELY not
seeking glamour. Just a little apartment, for me, myself
and I, small as it may be, that is simple but liveable (my
definition of liveable doesn't, by the way, involve
roaches). If this means a reduction in the rather insane
numbers I saw before, please let me know!
Thanx.

Hello again!
I have several "hotel and resort" and "car rental" award
certificates, sent to me by United Airlines, as a result of
all my business travel miles. I'm never going to use them,
particularly as they expire at the end of the year and I'm
going to be traveling until then!
-
The hotel one is good for 50% off 2 night (including Fri or
Sat.) stays at participating hotels (lists Hiltons,
Sheratons, Westins, Holiday Inns, etc.) and the car rental
one is good for upgrades or 50% off weekend rentals for all
the main rental companies (Hertz, Budget, National, etc.).
-
Would love to offer these up to other travelers... no
payment required, as they were free to begin with! Just
send me an email if you'd like them. I have about 4 of each
in all.

Hello!
I am preparing to leave for my 6month travels, and intend
to sell my car.
-
It has occurred to me that nothing would make me happier
than if my trusty steed were to lend itself to the mobility
of fellow travelers! The car itself is a reliable '91 blue
Ford, four doors, big trunk (boot) with the essential air
con and power steering!
-
I live in San Francisco. If anybody is interested, I'd be
thrilled to be able to sell it at a low price to a happy
traveler than to a potentially dodgy used car salesman :)
-
I know this isn't a classified site, but I'd just like to
offer it up to other travelers before I resort to the used
car lots! :)
-
Thanks,
Julie

Hello!
I'm trying to find reasonably priced accomodation at or
near Edmonton International AP , that should assure us a
good night's rest after a long transatlantic flight.
If the hotel/motel has a free airport pick-up service, it
doesn't really matter if it's a short distance from the AP.
We would like to find one that we can book by email or on-
line, though, as calling from Europe is expensive and
inconvenient. We arrive on the 16th of July in the evening
and pick up our rental car the next day at the airport,
that's why we don't want to travel into the city centre.
Thanks,
Bart

Dear All,
I'm planning to sped my summer vacation travelling around
the States and need to find a route. Obviously I would
like my trip to take me to the places with the friendliest
and sweetest BABES!!
So please, I'd love to find out where are the Hottest
Honies in the US? Are they naughtier in New York? More
stunning in Seattle or more tempting in Texas?

I've been trying to find a relatively cheap way to get to
the Friday Harbour from Seattle in a morning. I have 2 days
to get from Seattle to Vancouver in order to fly out, but I
wanted to go to San Juan Island on the way to do some
kayaking. Am I wasting my time trying to organise something
impossible or is an expensive sea plane the only way?
Thanks to anyone that can help.

Doing a video tour of America, and need to know the hot
spots. Are red light districts disappearing in the U.S.,
as my friend tells me? I need loads of hookers and willing
women to video. Also, what's the going rate these days?
And, is it true what my mate says, that anal is going the
way of the dinosaur?
Thanks for your advice

A quick question: when people go to Canada, do you have to
speak some French? I studied a little in high school, but
I'm afraid I can't remember too much.
Another thing - it's not, like, cold in the summer is it?

Can anyone give me an indication of living expenses in New
York City and Washington, DC? By living expenses I mean a
bachelor size apartment in a safe location but not
necessarily central, and bus or subway costs. Is it easy
to find such accommodation? I'd appreciate any help.
Please post here or e-mail me.

Apologies for asking a trivial question. But does anyone
know if an airship ever actually moored to the mast of
the Empire State Building? I know it was designed with that
in mind and I have a vague memory of seeing it illustrated
but that could have been an artists impression. It would be
a wonderful sight.

My friend and I from Norway are going to drive from New Orleans - San Antonio - Santa Fe - Durango - Grand Canyon - Las Vegas - Yosemite - San Fransisco. If any of you out there have suggestions on what to see on that route or other opinions (good or bad) please give them to us. We are plannig to drive most scenic byways and use time on that. We are not interested in hiking. We also want good advices on where to sleep (nice and not to expensive B&B's) and best resturants on the way. We are also interested in shopping for art, curiosities, things and stuff :-)

I notice all this argufyin' about whether Toronto is a good city for night life and is it better than American cities. One man's meat is another man's poison.
For good music, good beer and good multi-national companionship try Wakefield, Quebec. The Blacksheep has live music and attracts international celebreties. F'instance, last year a Scot turned Aussie, named
Eric Bogle sang at the Black Sheep.
How do you get to Wakefield, Quebec ?
Go to the web and consult www.moosetransportco.com
That will tell you about the Moose Bus which you can pick up in Toronto or Montreal. Ride the Moose Bus to
Sentiers (French for Trails) CARMAN Trails which is 25 km
(16 miles) North of Ottawa and 4km(2+ miles) South of Wakefield.
Carman Trails is an affiliate of Hostelling International and provides budget bunk accommodation. It also sells BEER.
There are some interesting Quebec brands plus Moosehead. At Carman Trails you can experience good music (and play yourself), experience good food (and cook yourself), walk on the 270km of trails in Gatineau Park.
Ride mountain bikes, rent canoes, go white-water rafting and even go bungee jumping - the Great Canadian Bungee Jump is within walking distance of Carman Trails.
To find out more about Carman Trails consult :
www.magma.ca/~carman or phone (819) 459 3180
You will find Canadians and Americans to continue the discussion on the merits of Toronto vs US cities and some
Canadians will wax lyrical about Montreal. Personally, I like Quebec City and you can get there on the Moose Bus too.
At Carman Trails you will find others that feel that Milan is best while others think that Sydney (the Aussie one that is)
is the ultimate fun city, while others will rave about Liverpool or Paris or Berlin or Barcelona.
Enjoy where you are NOW and go to Carman Trails as soon as possible to meet the WORLD.

trips (Cowichan, Gulf Islands etc.) just say so. Please have

Sorry everybody, a bit of a boring one- we (me and partner)
are investigating the practicalities and expense of having a
mobile for our travels in the US. We are british and there
are only a couple of phones (very expensive) that can be
perchased here and used in the US. I remember reading a
similar post to this one, the difference is that we don't
want it to call home-just for emergency DOMESTIC calls. I
think hiring will be expesive $10 per day (correct me). Do
you (americans) have pay as you talk system (like buying
phone cards for a mobile)-do you need a US billing address?,
can you get monthly contracts with the phone company?
PLEASE REPLY

Ah, the saga continues.
For those who have been following the ongoing arguement, I
have a point to make. To those who support my position,
thank you. For those who criticise my statement on the
grounds that anyone can ask anything, I accept that they
have a point. However, I regularly contribute to the
postings of other travellers looking for information. As a
british traveller, I feel I can contribute in a way more
attuned to the problems faced by overseas visitors. Since I
contribute freely when I can, I feel I am entitled to state
my opinion of those who ask certain types of questions. I do
my part, I give my opinion.

thing, ie: "it's full of DORKS" or "It's so SQUARE". Now
I've got nothing against the place and posts on this TT
branch tell me it's great, but does T.O. really shape up
where it matters? Are there many cool places to go for
people interested in art, cafes, books, decent music etc or
am I looking in the wrong city? Please let me know where to

Last summer I met a Canadian on the Rome to Naples train.
We started talking about aliens and he said that in the
1960's a flying saucer landed in the middle of Toronto.
The saucer was attacked by police and all the aliens were
killed and their bodies burnt to avoid any foreign diseases
attacking the population. But they saved the spaceship and
built two specially designed office towers and made it the
city hall. I thought this guy was just teasing me but
recently I saw a picture of it and it looks real. Does
anyone know anything about this?

Hi,
In July we'll be spending three weeks in Western Canada,
trying to visit the most important parks. On the internet I
find contradictory information regarding the sort of entry
passes you can purchase. There seems to be a 'Western
annual pass", valid for all parks in BC and Alberta,
costing 35 CND PER ADULT. (We're two adults, so that makes
70 CND)However, on another site I found that there should
also be something like a mountain pass, valid for all parks
in the rockies (not in Pacific Rim National Park), costing
60 CND PER CAR. I've visited US Parks before, and there the
price of a pass was valid per vehicle. So could someone
tell we what sort of pass we should purchase. Also, I'd
like to know if there is an entrance fee to be paid in
provincial parks as well.
Thanks a lot!

Hi my name is Angela and I am 36 years old on 21/5/99. I am
changing my direction in life and need to find excitment in
North America. My male friend in Australia would like me to
go with him to NYC for New Year's 2000. It just so happens
he is my step daughters ex-boy friend. Do you think NYC is
the place to enjoy new years 2000 for 2 people who have had
their hearts broken. We are great friends and have just
enjoyed a great night out dining in Adelaide, South
Australia. We have dicussed going to Time Square for New
Years and would like to know someones opinion on whether we
should go.
We are both professional people in the banking world and
would love to hear from and meet great people in NYC.

I'll be heading to Toronto next week - what's the weather
like just now? I have a dilema about what to pack. My
backpack isn't that big, and I want to know if I should
take a warm coat for going out at night. Will I get away
with just wearing a sweater?
Hopefully someone can answer this for me, so I can use my
packing space effectively.
Thanks

I would like some information regarding a One Way

What are the major differences between a regular airline and

work? Why is a carrier ticket so much cheaper.
I'm looking for a cheap one way ticket from LA to Amsterdam,

I am an Aussie planning to fly into Canada in early
December, after being in Africa and UK for a couple of
months. I want to get a Canadian working visa, however I
have been told that you need to be in Australia to receive
it. Has anyone else overcome this problem? Also, I have
been told that they are no longer giving out visas for
99..so I'll have to wait until 1.1.00 before I can even
apply for one. I was thinking I could fly into canada as a
tourist then go to the states for a while...get my family to
send it over to me then go back into Canada. Will this
work? Any suggestions?

I see that Carman Trails has been mentioned on the Thorn Tree. I have stayed there several times and enjoyed the company - Aussies, Germans, Mexicans, Brits, Koreans,
French, Americans even Canadians ! You can self-cater but the unusual food from the freezer is interesting.
I expect the garden will produce some fresh produce as it did when I was there.
The music menu posted behind the serving buffet is extensive.
They have a web site but I can't find the address. The telephone number is 819 459 3180 and they have an
e-mail address : carman@magma.ca
I was picked up at the Ottawa International Hostel by
Carman Trails' own shuttle but I unerderstand that a hopon, hopoff bus service known as Moose Bus now serves Carman Trails from Toronto and Montreal

Hello dear friends
First I would like to thank all of you who gave a serious
answer to the question I put some time ago on the same
subject.
The interesting inputs were a great help for for me in
preparing the rout for my summer holidays. I will travel
from Calgary over Banff and Jasper to Whitehorse by camper.
I am in need of follwing information.
1) As far as the National-Parks in Banff and Jasper are
concerned, what places need to bee seen at all costs? What
activities are possible and recommendable? Are those
organized? How many days would they last and what would
they cost?
2) What administrative steps have to be taken when
travelling across the boarder from Whitehorse to Skagway?
What from Juneau to Prince Rupert? Do we need special visas
or so?
I would very much appreciate your help in this. Thank you.

In response to an earlier post, I am not actually whoever
you think i am from a different topic tree. i may have used
his handle by mistake, but there you go. My point is that I
like to help people. I did a lot of research for my trip,
gained a lot of knowledge, and found thorn tree very useful.
Nothing pleases me more than to be able to share my
knowledge to help others, because there were some things I
wish i'd known before I started.
However, it is very dispiriting to be unable to help people
because they are too vague. They would gain more benefit
with specific questions. It also shows a lack of application
to the task in hand. If someone were going to the back of
beyond in deepest rainforest or asis etc, then it's probably
fine to ask what there is too see, but to have to ask what
to see in the USA - that's insane. Anyone who watches any
films and TV at all will be aware of the sights the USA
contains. Besides, what puzzles me is, why plan a
trip/drive, THEN think about what to see? The reason I went
to the USA was to see specific sights I knew about - Grand
Canyon, Niagara, New York. I have little desire to go to
Zimbabwe (no offence) because I do not know what is there. I
dont understand how people can plan a trip then think about
what to see. Surely the reason you planned the trip was
because you had something in mind already.
For those of you that missed the first gripping instalment
of this saga, I've included the original post below.
A moan

For all those who come here and post items such as:
"I/we
am/are going round/across USA for 1/2/3 months this
summer,
can anyone suggest where to go?", or asking what to see
in a
city like NEw York, might I suggest a tactic that has
proved
useful down the years - BUY A GUIDEBOOK. You must have
bought a lonely planet book to find the web site, and
if you
are going on holiday to a continent like USA, buying a
guidebook is surely an essential. Rather than ask
people for
information on ANYTHING, why not buy a guide book, see
what
takes your fancy (you must have some idea what is in
USA
anyway, as it is always on TV or in films, and all the
sights are famous - Grand CAnyon, Statue of Liberty etc
etc) then ask if there are more specific questions -
car
parking, opening hours, crowd size, cost etc.
I'm not a yank, by the way, but a Brit, in case anyone
is
wondering, but I make the abovep oint because I planned
a 3
month trip to USA using guide books, then came to teh
thorn
tree for additional, more specific info. I'd didn't
just ask
someone where to go. I only make the piont because I
feel it
is very hard for anyone to help you if you are so
vague. The
very first thing to do when going across USA is to get
a map
and sit at home and circle a few things to get a vague
idea
of the route, then look into it deeper for the less
well
known sights. I've found almost everysight worth seeing
is
in Lonely Planet books.
Bye

I'm in Australia on a one year working holiday visa, and

Hi
My (now deceased) father used to work at a building
apparently known as 'the old naval building' in Washington
DC. Apparently it's now been taken over by some other CIA-

Does anyone know of the 'Old naval building'?

Hoping someone out there in the USA can help. I have a client currently on the way to Boston and he needs to obtain a visa for India, whilst he is in the USA. He has 1 week in the States and would like a recommendation for a reliable visa company and if possible the location of the nearest Indian consular office to Boston. If anyone can give me a name and phone number of such a visa company I would be forever grateful.

Hello!
We will be going to visit the grand canyon sometime early
next month (about 3rd of June). We will be attempting to
take the Bright Angel Trail down to the canyon floor and
spending a night there. Then, we will probably take 2 days,
through the Indian Gardens, to accend back up to the south
rim. From what I have gathered from reading the posts here
and other grand canyon sites, it seems that accommondations
is a big problem!?! Yes, I understand we may be indeed too
late to get any accommodations (dorm rooms) at the Phantom
Ranch! Sighs,..... . I am wondering if there is still a
chance to get a dorm room at the Phantom Ranch, if not,
how about the campsite nearby. I suppose we need a
backcountry permit too eh? What are the chances of getting
all these now and how do I get about getting them if I am
not an american?
Thanks for any help!

sounded absolutely fabulous! You make the arrangements, and

Hi everyone,
We'll be going to Hawaii for about a week in June, and
I would like some info. Which is the best island, scenery,
beach/water wise? Any suggestions on accomodation, not to
exepensive, but with a double bed and bathroom in the room.
What are the things that we just have to see when we're
there? Thanks!

From early July this year, I intend to travel from Japan to the US. My destination is St Lucia, in the Caribbean. What I would like help with is some information regarding the cost of return tickets from LA, Dallas, Miami, to St Lucia (via wherever). Buying this connection from Japan is very expensive. From Japan, depending on which airline I use, I'll fly into either LA, or Dallas.
I am not American, and have no idea of the fare structures available. You might say "see a travel agent!", but that is easier said than done in this country.
Any help very much appreciated.
Please use either of the 2 addresses: simsmar@hotmail.com.

Any help would be appreciated...We are four women planning a
two week trip to Banff, Jasper area this summer. Our main
focus is seeing the sights and hiking. Any ideas on trails
to include...in particular day hikes around Banff, Lake
Louise, Icefields and Jasper. We are used to hiking in the
Great Smokies with a typical hike being 8-12 miles. Also,
any out of the way places to include on our trip would be
appreciated. Any suggestions on how to divide our time
between these areas with two weeks to do it? And food,
where would you recommend? I am new to this web site and
appreciate any suggestions!

question. Will I be able to go out at night in this area?
Thank you!!!!

I was thinking of trying to get a job on a cruise ship- if you've done this and can share recommendations or horror stories, please fill me in. I'm going to fly to Seattle in July and leave from Vancouver
about ten days later. I'm thinking of bringing my bike.
Will I run into much trouble bringing it on city or
long-distance transportation? What is it like to cycle to
and from the airport in either city. Are there cycling
groups that do day trips out of either place?
I'm also interested in how Washington state and British
Columbia compare generally in terms of scenery, outdoor
activities, and city life. I've read more about the parks,
etc. on the U.S. side, but there may just be more
information published. Are there Canadian counterparts to
the San Juan Islands or Olympic rainforests, for example?
I'm from the U.S. east coast and have never been to Canada,
so it might be more interesting for me and maybe a little
less expensive.

Sorry, plans changed, so my question on car rentals changed
greatly. We now hope to land in either Phoenix or San
Diego on May 19, rent a car, drive to L.A. and then drive
to various places, see relatives and friends, etc.and drop
the car off in San Diego on June 11. But when we checked on
rental prices from the major companies (e.g. Avis,
National, Alamo), we were quoted prices from $800-11100,
and some of those with 30 cents a mile mileage charges! We
don't want to buy a car, just rent it. Any suggestions?
We realize that one-way rentals make it more complicated,
since small outfits located at one airport or city usually
don't have branches elsewhere (or so it seems). If we were
just driving one-way coast to coast and then immediately
dropping off the car, we could look at services where
people want cars driven long distances and then dropped off
(no time for additional driving). Thanks for any
suggestions.

I am from Sydney and am hoping to spend Christmas with

My friends (working with a permit - a student exchange)
were arrested last year in SC for being drunk, walking on a

They were trialed and charged a small fee. None of them

Is it related to their arrest or can it be just a
coincidence?

Hello, I am from Italy and I am planning to go to Canada
next summer. I'll start by touring the West: Vancouver,
Victoria, the Rockies for 2 weeks. Afterwards I would like
to settle in either Toronto OR Montreal for a month to take
piano lessons and do some shopping, as I prefer city life.
All I need to know is which city to choose? Some people
told me that Toronto is great, with lots of things to see
and do, while others told me that it is an unclean and
unsafe city with high crime rates. On the other hand, I
read that Montreal is very interesting in the summer with
lots of festivals and more security. So can somebody please
help me make up my mind? And this in terms of security,
transportation, lodging, shopping, things to see,...etc,
and taking into consideration that I can speak both English
and French. So Which city would better be my Canadian home
for this summer, Montreal or Toronto??? Thank you.

I travelled all through the US for over five months; along
the East Coast, then across the country to the West Coast,
stopping here and there. Of course, I wasn't everywhere, but
I think I have seen a fair crossection of the USA.
Now don't get me wrong. A lot of the scenery is absolutely
magnificent, e.g Shenondoah National Park,Smokey Mountains,
Monument Valley or the Grand Canyon. New York I found
fascinating and Charleston very beautiful. etc. Most of the
people I met were helpful and friendly. So it was the
perfect trip? - Or?
In spite of all this, I have a problem with this country.
In no other country, with the possible exception of the
Middle East, have I encountered such a constant exposure to
religious, in this case, Christian, propaganda, be it on TV,
on billboards or in the newspaper ( which, by the way, seem
oblivious of the fact that a world outside of the US
exists), bringing with it all the bigotry one expects in a
fundamentalist society: for example: on the one hand
opposition to sex education in schools, suppression of
literature and art, on the other hand the highest rate of
teenage pregnancies in the western world and the biggest sex
industry in the world. Religious fanatics attack
pro-abortion clinics and doctors, and, at the same time
advocate capital punishment.
All races and nationalities are considered equal ( according
to the Constitution ), but there is so much "normal" racism
everywhere ( "Be careful that's where the n.... live. You
shouldn't go there!" etc.).
If something goes wrong in American economics, its always
somebody else's fault, be it the Germans in the '70s or the
Japanese in the '80s.
Americans, and I'm speaking of normal people here, are so
ignorant of the world outside their borders that it has even
become a joke on their own TV ( like 'The Jay Leno Show').
The American government has often supported regimes of the
most dubious kind ( for example the Khmer Rouge in
Cambodia), when it suited their gain. That is, of course,
what all governments do, but the US have always brought God
into this, as if God were only on their side. (Other gods
and beliefs being neglible).
I know that the US are still a symbol of hope to many
countries/people in the world, but I see a threat of this
country becoming a fundamentalist state, if it isn't already
one. The US think they are the best country in the world.
They are the most powerful. They are, if i consider most of
the people I met, one of the most likeable. But the best?
- A country where everyone is terrified of crime? Where it
is ridiculously easy to buy firearms of any kind ( and I
mean any kind ) and shoot your spouse, your neighbours, your
school teachers or your presidents ?
- Where people like to point at every wrong in the world,
but what about their treatment of their own ' natives',
(euphemistically named 'Native Americans' these days)? -
When these Native Americans embark on some kind of
enterprise that secures them some sort of profitable income,
like casinos, they are again attacked.- "We sent them into
the desert, and, even up to the '70s sterilised their women,
and they still havent't died out yet, on the contrary..."
- Where the rate of analphabetism is higher than in many
countries of the so-called Third World.
- Where it is still hard to be a person of 'not white skin'
(whatever that may be).
- American justice means American profit!
I would like objective responses to this. Maybe other
travellers have the same kind of misgivings, or is it only
just me?
I can imagine there will be a lot of flak from so-called
patriots. I've met them: whenever the US flag is shown, they
salute, they have the most smug expression their faces when
they do it,too.
(Just look at book reviews at amazon: books that humourously
and (self-) ironically describe other places, be it
England, Australia or whatever, are usually enthusiatically
acclaimed. But just look at books about the US, often by the
same authors... not jokes, please! Americans do not
appreciate humour of this kind when it is about their own
country. - And that, I think, is maybe the most telling of
all.)
Looking forward to an open discussion!

My wife & I intend to travel down from the States into
Mexico & C.America by camper van. Problem no.1 - convincing
US Immigration that we intend to leave the country (we're
British & won't have a return flight to the UK sorted as we
have no fixed time schedule) & so actually getting into the
States... can anyone advise on this kind of bureaucratic
nightmare??
Problem no. 2 - buying a VW camper van - either in Toronto
or in the San Francisco area - buying the van's ok, but
after that we're in the dark - insurance, taxes,
registration etc. Is this fairly straightforward or more
bureaucracy...?? Do we need a fixed address in the
US/Canada, for example?
Lastly, can someone explain why it takes 3 weeks for the US
embassy in LOndon to process visa applications, yet it
takes the Indian embassy just 2 hours...!! Speaks volumes
to me...
Thanks for the help.

Hi,
I have asked this question before, but I didn't get to many answers.
I want to buy a cell phone in USA. I realize that the phone company needs an adress to send the bill to, but what I was wondering about is if there is possible to buy calling cards you can use. In Norway it is possible to buy a card you plug in the phone, and you could talk for different periods of time, depending on what card you buy. This means that you have payed for the service before you have used it. Is it a similar system in the US?
My friend and I are going to drive from New Orleans to San Francisco in July. We have received a lot of information before, but I haven't got any information on Durango, Mesa Verde. We are also planning to go to the North rim of the Grand Canyons. Are there other interesting sights in that area?
Thanks.

How hard is it to climb Mt.Edith Cavell and Mt.Assiniboine.
I,m not an avid climber and don't know too much about using
protection but in the guide book I have it says the
climbing is no harder than 5.4 on Assiniboine and 5.3 on
Edith Cavell. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello fellow travellers - hope you can help me out. I'm

And if you picked Whistler, what's your second choice? I'm

nightlife, and excellent, reliable skiing.
Thanks to all who can help me!!!

Should I book there or go to the expensive centrally

We leave next weak to San Francisco and will spend 10 days
visiting California by car, including Yosemite, Death Valley
and up the coast back to SF.
We are mainly interested in landscapes, the more amazing and
extreme they are, the better it is. And we like to discover
them by foot, but as I said we have only 10 days.
Does anybody know about some spots where we could do a
fast little trek, let's say between 2 and 6 hours maxi, so
we could include 3 or 4 of them in our trip ?
Thanks

I'm going to New York later in the year, with my mother.
I've been a few times before, but it'll be her first time.
A few years ago I stayed at a place called (I think)
WEbster's Apartments, which I think would be perfect for us.
It was run by a charitable trust (I think), is a women only
establishment, is really central (close to Times Square, I
think) and had a lovely roof garden. Unfortunately, I've
lost the address and phone number. Can anyone help me out

First, I just got back from NM/AZ and had a great time. Thanks to those who gave me information before I left on the trip. Grand Canyon was breathtaking. Not quite as impressed with Sadona, but I thought that Oak Creek Canyon (I think that is the correct name....Highway 89A) was beautiful.
Now my next question is...... 2 ex-roommates and I want to go on vacation together next year. One likes to scuba dive, I like to hike and snorkle, and one will not hike or camp and enjoys laying on the beach, and we would all probably like to see some "tourist" sights. I thought we might be able to find somewhere in Mexico that would fill all these needs. Beach, ruins, etc. But I have no idea where to start looking..... I don't want a total tourist trap - is there anywhere nice and not too overcommercialized but still affordable?? Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

Just got back from an eight month trip in which I and my
woman-friend bought a car and travelled all over North
America. As much as we enjoy nature, we're city lovers who
are contemplating a move to North America in the near
future. So this trip was part fun, part serious
investigation.
The results? Mexico City is the most intriguing city on
the continent - there is an intense sadness there, you feel
it the minute you walk out of the arrival lounge of the
airport. New York could never live up to the hype - we
weren't surprised at our disappointment with the place -
perhaps being Londoners, we have more literary expectations
than can be satisfied by belligerent heroin addicts in the
park in Greenwich Village. We'll give Boston a positive
nod, though. Yes, on the East Coast Boston seems the most
cosmopolitan, although at the same time it's disturbingly
segregated.
Chicago seemed to want to hold us, but then we realized it
was only its skyscrapers that were entreating us. After a
few days the boorishness of its citizens' "midwestern
charm" became overwhelming. And while staring up at Frank
Lloyd Wright masterpieces is nourishing, one wishes there
were more to see at ground level. How do they live in
those ubiquitous four-floor walkups?
San Francisco is far too self-conscious in its attempt to
appear European, and that spoiled it for us. For every
hipster in a cafe in North Beach there are ten "49ers fans"
driving pickup trucks around the block. Perhaps when
compared to the rest of America this city has a European
feel, but then that's going to the lowest denominator. We
felt like asking people there, "Why don't you just pack up
and move to Europe, instead of sitting in San Francisco
pretending you are?" A bit like playing American football
at a park in London - doesn't fit, does it?
Forget Los Angeles. Forget Seattle (what a waste of gas -
do Americans really believe that Seattle has a music scene
capable of producing more than Pearl Jam grunge-ofied rip-
offs?) Forget Austin too (another waste of gas - a liberal
oasis in a sea of "cracker" culture is, again, going to the
lowest denominator).
We came to the conclusion that the only bearable city in
North America is Toronto. Very cosmopolitan, very quirky,
with some of the reserve you find among Canadians (a
delight after American boorishness), yet as the world's
most ethnically diverse city the neighbourhoods are
distinct and charming. Only New York touches Toronto for
breadth and variety of ethnic groups in one city (You know
a Londoner is being honest when he admits of this - we have
our own conceits to being one of the world's grandest
ethnic stews) Architecturally, Toronto relies a little too
much on Victorian brick "row housing", and its yearning to
have a financial district full of gleaming glass towers is
suspect, but that can be forgiven. What really impressed
us about Toronto was the amount of cultural activity
happening, especially musically in the clubs along Queen
Street and also along Bloor Street. While no city in the
world can touch London for live music, Toronto is
astounding for its variety and quality, and I would rate it
second to London if only for those two reasons - obviously
New York is bigger, so it surpasses Toronto in quantity
(but not London, of course). The theatre as well seems to
be flourishing - we read that Toronto now has the world's
third most active theatre life, after London and New York.
Quite impressive for a city of only 3 or 4 million all told.
Is this a love letter? No, merely an appreciation of what
urban North America has to offer. If it ever came to the
day that I and my woman-friend were to move to that
continent, I believe we know which city would be the most
attractive to us.

I've got a trip to the States coming up, a three week
sojourn through the southern states. As I've never been
before, I've only the second-hand impressions of others to
go on, but many of them did tell me that when in America
one should avoid niggards if at all possible.
I've been made to understand that they are very unpleasant
in the south, even moreso than those in the northern
cities, such as New York.
Perhaps I could trouble any Americans on this list to give
a few helpful hints should I be confronted by any niggards
during my trip?

Hello, My friends and I are visitin New York for a couple of
days on an "around the country" drive. We are not
desperately keen to drive into New York. We are instead
thinking of staying at a motel at Newark Airport for there
is bound to be plenty of parking there, and then get public
transport to Staten Island ferry each day. We do this so to
avoid all the traffic jams, and so we can use the Staten
Island ferry - the idea of entering New York this way has
been a vision of ours.
Our questions:
1-Could I just check that there is plenty of accomodation
near Newark airport?
2-How long would it take to get from Newark to
Staten Island ferry? We're prepared for about 1 hour max. Is
it longer than this?
3-What kind of transport runs between Newark and Staten
Island ferry? Can you get a subway train?
4-Would we be better to drive from our hotal/motel in NEwark
to Staten island Ferry? IS there a car park? Is it safe?
I've heard that part of Staten Island isn't terribly safe.
Answers to any or all these questiosn gratefully received.
Thank you,
David(and friends).

My friend and I are planning a trip to the USA this summer. We are planning to drive from New Orleans to San Francisco. We are going to use about one month on the trip.
We are going to drive this route: New Orleans - Houston - San Antonio - Santa Fe - Durango - Grand Canyon - Las Vegas - Los Angeles - San Francisco.
Does anyone have good advices on what roads to drive? We dont want to drive the major highways, but take more senic routes.
We also want to know of the best (cheap) places to stay, eat and see along the route. We are not interersted in hiking, we want to see most of it from the car. ( Of course there is going to be some hiking, but that will be from the car to a viewpoint)
Will there be a problem to find places to sleep if we don't bookin advance? Since we don't know when we are going to be at those places it is difficult to book in advance.
We also want to know of nice places in Texas. (Between San Antonio and Santa Fe)
Is it expensive to buy a cellular phone with calling card? Since we are staying for a while it will be nice that people can reach us from home (Norway).
We will be grateful for all kinds of advices on where to go!!

We will be in LA for about 8-10 days and would like to
travel out to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas for about 3 of

transport and/or accommodation to the Grand Canyon from Las
Vegas or LA? Travel Agents keep saying to take a proper

coast and inland (not interested and way too expensive) or
drive (which we are not inclined to do), we would like to do
our own thing at a leisurely pace and be as independent as
possible without relying on a car. Does anyone have any
ideas?

We want to go for a citytrip to Washington DC in october
1999. Does anybody have a recommendation for a good hotel,
midrange budget? Are there any special deals for the better
hotels during the weekend (let's say discounts of 50%)? Are
there any websites where one can get discounted rooms?
Thanks for your info.

hiya peoples!
I am flying into Cancun for 9 nights in July. I do not
want to stay in Cancun or in any other large resort (no
Isla Mujeres or Cozumel or Playa del Carmen)! I do not
want to stay by discos or around mad party animals... it is
just my 4 year old and myself (I am 37).
I am looking for quiet cheap (under $45 a night) places to
stay on white sandy beaches with very tranquil surf. We
will not be renting a car so there has to be bus
transportation or a cheap collectivo to get there.
So far, I am thinking of Tulum, Akumal or Tankah... I would
appreciate any and all suggestions of beach towns and
places to stay, transportations, etc.
I do speak some Spanish...
thanks! :)

Does anyone know if it's cheaper to buy winter cothing in
say San Francisco or NYC to wear on a six week vacation to
US. and Canada starting from San fran then Florida, NYC,
Fernie B.C. ,Vancouver, san fran and flying home from L.A.
It will be dec/jan and am wondering is it better to bring
warm clothing and how warm or buy when we arrive. We are not
accustomed to cold winters in Sydney. Are there any good
places in u.s or canada to buy from? thanks

I'm flying from Europe to NYC with Tower Air which was the
cheapest flight I found. This is the first time I hear
about Tower Air. Is it a well-known and reliable air
company? Anybody has already flown with Tower Air? How was
it? Is there frequent delay with their flights?
Sorry for my ignorance and thank you for answering!

Is there an inexpensive or moderately priced r/t cruise
from Vancouver? I've investigated BC Ferries. Pay double
for the r/t by way of Vancouver Island and an overnight in
Prince Rupert. Any other Ferry service available or is
$550Canadian for two a fair price? Thanks in advance.

HI! I'm getting an Ameripass for 60 days- some people have
mentioned the dangers of bus travel on other posts. Tell
the truth- first hand knowledge-not what you hear. Is it
really scary? Do I really need pepper spray? Are the bus
stations really so dangerous and bad? I don't want to be
afraid- I've travelled around Europe and Asia and wasn't
scared- should I be worried about the U.S.A?

I've been told it's impossible to get a decent cup of coffee
in the US, but I'm determined to find at least a few cafes
where I can pull up a chair, sip at a quality brew, and
watch the world go by. I'll be passing thru San Francisco,
Chicago, New Orleans, Boston and New York, and I swear I
won't leave until I prove my Aussie doubter friends wrong!
Any suggestions? I'm willing to travel elsewhere as well!
Thanks,
Paul

Is there anyway I can get a subway map of NYC on the internet.
I want to see where I have to go before I get there....or is it easy to pick up a subway map at the airport ( La Guardia)??
Also, about the metro card, is this a popular and easy way to get around??
Does it make you stand out as an obvious tourist if you have one of these..or is it better to buy a whole load of subway tokens ??
Thanks

Everyone, please reafd this:
I am from the year 2086. I have journeyed back in
time to warn the people of this era of an impending
catastrophe. Unfortunately, due to restrictions of my
government, the United States of Canada, I am not
permitted to reveal the warning signs or nature of this
disaster. However, I am willing to evacuate refugees
aboard my time machine and take them back to my
time. Be warned, though, if you chose to come with
me you may spend the rest of your lives lecturing at
Quebec state U. the follies of the 20th century.
Contact me at this primitive address. And bring what
you call "checkbook" and "credit cards".

Hi everyone and anyone, one quick question to aid my future
travels.
I'm visiting NYC for a week in early August, then 5 weeks in
California (SF & LA), until mid september. From my knowledge
of US sports of which I am a big fan, I have a feeling I
will miss an opportunity to see most if not all of the
sports.
I know quite a bit on most of the sports (for a Brit
anyway), can anyone tell me of the sports i will be able to
see during my time in the states.
Any info would be great.............Go Vikings

As a sometime follower of this list, I've noticed that
Western Canadians tend to get bloody defensive in their
reactions to what Easterners say. I'm a Brit with
relatives and friends all over Canada, been three times,
and don't understand what the fuss is.
Perhaps I, as an outsider, could give a more objective
opinion?
The Eastern cities of Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec
City are all charming in their own ways, and hear this - of
all the western cities I've been to, only Winnipeg comes
close to having any of the urban atmosphere of their
Eastern cousins. Calgary and Edmonton are dull dull dull,
pointless as destinations for non-Canadians wanting to see
Canada. Vancouver is blessed by its surrounding beauty -
the city itself is, again, devoid of any charm.
But then, one goes to the West to see the Rockies, no? In
fact, one goes to Canada for its natural beauty, and not to
see cities. Toronto is no New York, no matter its status
as the world's most diverse city. If you were going to see
only one city in Canada, it would have to be Quebec City.
Who would disagree?
So why all the argument?

Going to America in a few weeks and am wondering how we will
survive if we cant get beers/wine etc.
We're both 19, knowing the law is 21 in America & hearing
their very strict what we want to know is can you get around
this like in England by drinking with your meal (In England
you only have to be 14+ to be leaglly allowed to consume
alchohole in a restraunt but 18 to be served at a bar)
will we be served alchohole with food or is it 21 again?
If not please please give us some of your ingeneouse litttle
plots on how you got served in the US.
Cheers

If you are in USA or Canada please tell what the last meal
you ate was. Exclude snacks - just what your last meal was.
This will let me know what typically people in Nth
America eat.

This is not a joke. My girlfriend and I are traveling from
Halifax to California soon. Of course, part of our trip
will be to Disneyland. We thought it would be fun (and a
bit subversive) to have sex while we're at Disneyland.
Our goal is to do it and not get caught, we don't want to
make a spectacle of ourselves. We want to see if we can
get away with it. Has anyone tried this? We have detailed
maps of the park as described in guidebooks and what not,
so specific locales are welcome. There has to be a secluded
part of the park suitable for a romp. If anyone has any
suggestions as to where to try our luck, you'll have the
pleasure of knowing that you'll be in the back of our minds
while we're doing it!
Serious responses only please.
