General advice

Hi
I intend to Los Angeles and hire a car to drive up to
Seattle. I then plan to fly to Memphis, Chicago, Dallas
and New York. Can anyone advise us on the following:
1. What's the best way to go about organising car hire in
LA? - Best company, type of car, book before arrival/at the
airport/locally?
2. Any recommendations for hotels in New York, LA,
Memphis? The budget is around $80 per night. Do hotels
need to be booked in advance in June?
Thanks

Alamo is often the best of the majors for car deals. Go
through yahoo! "travel" for all of the companies' web pages
and deals. A website called www.bestfares.com is great for
discounts at lux hotels, and for car and flight deals. Also,
try yahoo! travel for bed and breakfasts as a hotel
    alternative.

If you're flexible, consider doing a "driveaway" from LA to
Seattle. That's where someone wants their car taken from
point A to point B, but doesn't want to drive it there
themselves. A driveaway company will arrange it for you,
and since you are travelling between two major cities, you
have a good possibility of finding a car ready to leave on
the same day you are. The downfall...you are on a time
limit and mileage limit, no time for a week's diversion
    over to Yosemite.

Just a hint: American English uses "car rental" and "rent a
car" rather than "car hire". Car hire sounds like you want
a chauffeur driven car. Might avoid confusion.
