I am looking for a way to leave north america by ship. I know that there are many people looking for experienced hands on a ship leaving for many destinations from Vancouver such as Guam, Hawii, etc. I am fed up with my job and i want to head for the open seas. If you can help me with any leads I would be very appreicative. I would love to spend my life as a skipper. Thanks

I am from Vancouver and I looked into this a while ago. I
might still do this next fall. I have asked a few marinas
in Alameda, CA (San Francisco) and didn't get much
information. I would try talking to as many marinas as you
can in Both Vancouver and SF. I have a hunch that some
marinas have more of the yuppy clientelle that just likes to
sail their boats around on weekends, and some others have
boat owners which are more hardcore and live and travel on
their boats. I think if you talked to as many marinas as
possible you might find some info on boats heading south. I
also talked to the sailing school in Vancouver that I did my
sailing course with. This wasn't a very common enquiry but
the guy tried to give me his suggestions. He said I should
either go to Hawaii or Cabo San Lucas and hunt around for
boats going south. Of course Cabo would be my choice
because it's cheaper to get to and much cheaper to live
until you get on a boat.
Another thing to consider is that insurance for the boats
doesn't kick in until November after the summer period due
to hurricane dangers, so the boats wait around until then
and then all charge down I think. If you get any
information or success let me know because I could also use
    the info.

Hi, you could try to work on a cruise ship, there is many
different jobs. Just go to the yellow pages and you gonna
have a list of different cruises lines. It might be no so
fun then a sailing boat, but you earn good money for hard
work and usually it's temporary works. it gives you the
opportunity to cross the Oceans "for free". Have fun!

You may want to consider buying a boat for yourself! Used
boats come pretty "cheap" You could get a nice 26 fotter
for app. 16K. Think about it, you only live once.

  4. Get a crewing job Added by: FloridaSailor

Search the web under "crewing", you'll find lots of crew
wanted/crew available lists. Post your qualifications there
    and see what happens.
There are also professional agencies which find crews for
yachts, such as CrewFinders in Ft. Lauderdale. If that's
what you're looking for try them.
