Apologies for asking a trivial question. But does anyone
know if an airship ever actually moored to the mast of
the Empire State Building? I know it was designed with that
in mind and I have a vague memory of seeing it illustrated
but that could have been an artists impression. It would be
a wonderful sight.

I saw that recently mentioned in Time Out NY issue a couple
weeks ago about "Lost New York". All it says is, i happen
to have the mag here at work, "when completed in 1931, the
1,250 fttall tower was outfitted with a mooring mast for
skyscraping dirigibles. Ina perfect world, airships of all
sizes would float silently over midtown, make elegant
approaches, dock smoothly and gather happy passengers. And
there was one perfect landing -- the first. NYC's volatile
winds caused later attempts to fail. The mast has been
replaced by a TV tower, and now we stay inside and watch our
shows--and never float like angels over the murmuring city."
The writer was Adam Sachs.
Many thanks for that info. Ah, those were the days!
Glad to know something for once!
actually the tv tower is on top of the mast. if you go to
the observation deck and look up you can still see the
biggest god damned mooring tees that you will ever see.
way cool.
