My brother is going to the US this fall and he is planing to buy a car and tour the country. It seems to be impossible to get information about car insurance in the US. Does anybody out there know how he (as a tourist) can get a car insurance in the US. Is it expensive?

Oh man, as a foreigner with no U.S. driving record, it will
cost your brother a fortune. The best bet is to get
insurance in a state that requires "no fault" like
Massachusetts. In Mass, the state driving authority does
not accept driving records from anywhere else so everybody
starts off with the same record. My old girlfriend had
three accidents in one year that she was responsible for
and when she moved back to Boston, her insurance went down
to 1/10th of what is was in RI because of this. I guess
this is why a lot of convicted drunk drivers go up to Mass
to get a new license and a fresh start to driving loaded
again. Good luck and happy trails.
I have outlined the requirements in Michigan on my website: www.webspawner.com/users/n389 It should be useful, but does not app;ly to every state.
