Hi I am planning our first trip to NYC in the fall and I
have narrowed my search for a hotel. I am planning to stay
in a standard room at the Gershwin Hotel, but I am a little
hesitant. If anyone has stayed at the Gershwin, could you
please give me your opinion about the place? Is it clean,
safe? What is the check in time and is there any good
restaurants in the neighbourhood? Is the area safe at
night? Finally is it close to the theater district?
Thanking you in advance

I can't vouch for the rooms at the Gershwin, but the lobby
and cafe are pretty cool. It's a pretty trendy place. It
hosts art exhibits and bands. If you are into that it's a
great place. It seems like guests and others like to hang
out in the lobby so it'll be pretty easy to meet people. I
remember the downstairs as being kind of smoky and the
bar/cafe/performance space people sometimes spill into the
lobby. It has a good vibe and the neighborhood is fine. You
are not in the heart of anything, but it's a 5 minute walk
to the empire state building and another 5-10 to Times
Square.
But then again, I visited in early May and the dorm rooms were not full. If the place were full, the ratio of one bathroom to 24 or so people might be a drawback. Other than that, yes, excellent artsy lobby (and crowd), good location (10 minutes by subway to the theater district and an attractive neighborhood) plus secure baggage storage for $1 a day.
i was in the dormitory type room, it was great!
