Have about 10 days to spare and are considering hiring a car
and driving from Miami to New Orleans. Would like to know -
Is this an interesting trip?
What places would be interesting to stop at inbetween?
Any hostel suggestions?
How long would it take?
What is the driving like?
Is a hire car the best way to go? Other suggestions?
What would I expect to pay for car rental?
Any help really appreciated.
thanks

The fastest way from Miami to New Orleans is via interstate
highways and will take you probably 24 hours. The scenery
is dull and monotonous. You would be better off to spend
an extra day enjoying Miami and another enjoying New Orleans
rather than driving. Fly if you can afford it. The distance
    is formidable.

Serita is right:for the most part this is a long, boring
driving trip. However, there are some interesting places to
visit along the way. I would drive up I75 to Lake City the
first day and then go tubing down the Itchetucknee River the
next day.It is a beautiful, crystal clear river(because it
is fed by several springs). The Florida State Park
Service limits the number of people allowed to float down
the river so arrive early to secure a permit. If you have
snorkeling equipment, take it with you.It is really special!
After that, check out the Florida Panhandle. Panama City is
an eyesore(though a fun place to party if you are young).
Destin and Ft Walton are nice and have great beaches, the
best in Florida.Seaside is a charming, planned town(it's
where The Truman Show was filmed)and usually has something
going on throughout the weekends in summer. After the
Panhandle there isn't that much to see before New Orleans
unless you want to go to one of the casinos in
Biloxi,Mississippi. Cirque de Soleil has set up a permanent
show in Biloxi at one of the casinos(I think Beau Rivage)
that will open at the end of May.
If you decide to fly instead, check out Airtran for cheap
    tickets at airtran.com.Good Luck.
P.S. I didn't mention Orlando because it is SO hot there in
    summer.
