I need 4-5 days of decompression on the beach. Thinking
about Cabo, but wondering about the safety of a woman
travelling alone. Does anyone have tips on inexpensive,
friendly hotels? I speak a little spanish, and prefer
native culture to anglican flash. There's a reason for
leaving the USA, although I realize Cabo isn't very far.
Thanks.

  1. Progresso Beach... Added by: debi

....is a great place to chill out, you may even have the
beach to yourself. Fly into Merida, grab a room for the
night(Hotel Latino is good and reasonable) catch the bus
out to Progresso in the morning. Lots of furnished
apartments here, you should be able to get 1 for a week.
Just ask around, it's not a big city, just a little town.
Also lots of North Americans stay here so if you start to
miss speaking English. Take lots of film, it's $10.00 a
roll here. The beer is cheap and you get antijotes(like
appetizers) with it free. Great shell picking on the beach!

Cabo is mostly a U.S tourists getaway. If you want some
local flavor, Progreso is great but it's a little too far. I
believe you are thinking about Cabo 'cause it's near you. If
you want some local flavor, maybe you should get further
    south.

I agree that Cabo is mostly an extension of Southern
California with a big beach party scene. It's not
inexpensive and can be pretty tacky. However, flying into
Cabo (or La Paz) (both served by Alaska Air and others)
there are a variety of smaller villages accessible via the
bus lines that offer good decompression opportunities. I
have spent some time near Todos Santos and really enjoyed
it. There are also places in the "East Cape" (i.e. between
Cabo and La Paz accessible via dirt roads) that are reported
to be great. Check out the LP Baja California Guidebook.
