Finally got 3 weeks off coming up in June. Have friends in
both Toronto and Seattle who are begging me to visit them
(I live in Chicago - halfway between?). As I am a huge
live music freak, I plan to be spending most every night in
a club. But I have to make a choice -- Toronto or
Seattle? I can't afford to do both. If you're from either
place, can you persuade me of the musical ambience of
either place?
Thanks : )

Eileen,
Come to Toronto! we've got tons of clubs, freat nightlife
for any style, and lots of great restaurants (after all,
we're the most multicultural city in the world). Come and
see for yourself!
Toronto
The only reason to go to Seattle would be if you like
rain. Well, okay, it is near the ocean, I'll grant you
that. But I spent five years there, and while there are a
few good clubs, the media latched onto "grunge" without
letting up... lots of kids moved into town... my own band
got a record deal, which subsequently fell through... and
at about that time I began noticing that all the bands in
Seattle sound virtually the same. Ever wonder why the big
ones from Seattle are Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana,
etc.? Because no city that small could support much
variety.
I'm back home in Michigan now, given up on music and doing
web stuff. Last month we went to Toronto for the weekend,
and I couldn't believe how "undiscovered" this city is,
Blew Seattle out of the water - Toronto's got live music
coming out of every street corner, the clubs are incredible
- check out Queen Street for sure, and I think Bloor...
can't remember the name of the street. But Canada's a
smaller market, and us Americans are fairly close-minded to
outside influences anyway, so that's why so many incredible
bands are playing in Toronto that nobody south of the
border has heard of.
For music, choose Toronto. Any day.
... is second only to New York for music. L.A. has a lot
more, but a lot more of it's all the same. Toronto has got
variety, which is not surprising considering that it's the
world's most culturally diverse city.
queen street - cameron house
bloor street - lee's palace
--> these two places are the coolest in the world - look
for the lineups in eye or now magazine

Posts above are saying the right things. Toronto is not
the best town for jazz, not the best town for Brit-top, not
the best town for hip-hop, not the best town for... But
hey, it has a bit of everything. Believe me, give it a bit
more time. It can only get better. (I personally reckon
the Elmo-cambo at Spadian & College, where the Rolling
Stones used to play once and partied with Maggie Trudeau...
I am a British music fan. That place on Sat. plays great
music like Super Furry Animals and other great British
bands) Enjoy your stay in T.O.
