Has anyone stayed at the Thunderbird Lodge at Canyon de
Chelly in Arizona? How would it compare to say the Best
Western Canyon de Chelly in at Chinle?

Stayed at the Thunderbird Lodge about 6 weeks ago. Have
not stayed at the Best Western, but drove by there. The
Thunderbird Lodge is an attractive group of one story
buildings with nice landscaping. I think the Best Western
is a two story cookie cutter motel surrounded by asphalt.
The Thunderbird rooms are not fancy, but are quite
comfortable. The cafeteria is in a historic trading post
and is not too expensive (food is adequate.) You can walk
easily from the Thunderbird to the visitor center where you
can arrange guides for walking into the canyon (guides
required, as you may know, except for the White House
trail). Also, you can easily walk from the Thunderbird to
the meeting point for evening walks into the Canyon - which
I recommend, especially on a moonlit night. I would stay at
the Thunderbird again and from what I saw, no reason to
stay at the Best Western.
Steve,
I had read descriptions of the lodge in the Lonely Planet
and other guides but it is always better to hear from
someone who has actually stayed in the accommodation. The
lodge is slightly dearer than the motel but it sounds like
it might be worth it. Thanks for advice.
