I think all states have a drinking age of 21. The federal government passed a law in the 80's saying states must have a drinking age of 21 or they wouldn't get money to fund road building.
One suggestion is to try towns with big colleges. Most of the bars in these towns allow folks 18 - 21 in the bar and will mark your hand showing you can't buy a drink but (wink, wink) you'll probably get served anyway. A tip from my college days.

Nice of you to want to travel all that distance and spend all
that money with gettin drunk your primary goal. At 18 you
could actually find some other things to do here. For any of
you who want to rag at me for this I lost 2 brothers to a
drunk drive so guess I got right to bitch.

The person who wrote the article did not say anything about
drinking and driving. The person was merely thinking of
having funàdo you remember what that is??
Please do not think that I am having a go at you. I too
lost a very close person in a similar accident, very
    recently.
The thing is, didnÆt it make you realise that you have to
live for the moment? I know it did with me.
This person is just a normal 18 year old asking a question
that many 18-21 are thinking themselves if they are
    travelling to the US.
After all, isnÆt that what this site is all aboutà.talking
about holidays, travel and asking questions etc.
It is definitely not about imposing judgements on others.

When I travelled throughout america the only id that was
accepted from an Australian to get into pubs, clubs and bars
    was a passport.

I can only speak for Seattle, but at 18 you can't go into
bars and you can't go into clubs except on designated
nights. I had a friend visit me from Brazil and I couldn't
bring her to any of the clubs because they all thought she
was underage and her ID was Brazilian. She was 23, but
looks younger. Living in Brazil for six months, I know
that coming back to the US and their strict laws can be
hard. Its even harder to try to explain the leniance of
drinking in other countries to obstinant citizens here.
Good luck and have fun while you are here. There are a lot
of fun places to go and have fun besides bars. Just make
    good friends and be careful!!!

  8. Don't Mess With Texas Added by: Christie

Don't even try to drink under age here!!! Our IDs are almost
impossible to fake now (digital with holograms), and every
club I know of will "card" everyone that walks into the
door. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is very strict
about this, and a club can lose its liquor license for a
YEAR if they are caught serving minors!! Also, minors who
drive under the influence face some SEVERE penalties here,
    too...

I'm 28 and get carded regularly. Most state ID's are now
very hard to duplicate. Sorry, Vijay, you'll have to find
other things to do with your evening hours than hang out in
the bar socializing with locals. Bummer, I know...

Sure, even in a college town like Boston (my hometown) it
can be hard to find a good place that will let you in if
you're underage. But especially in a a college town like
Boston, if what you're looking for is a place where you can
get alchohol you might try college campuses. There are
plenty of schools around and most have a constant stream of
parties of all sorts, from frat-boy beer fests to more
interesting affairs. Depending on the school they're more
or less strict about who gets in, but with all the schools
here there's sure to be something. Just show up at a school
and look at the flyers around campus. Good Luck!
P.S. It's true about the ID. In fact lots of places here
    won't even take a passport - just a Massachusetts Driver's
    Licence.

  11. ids Added by: boston
[Timestamp: Thu 20 May, 13:54 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Boston is notorious for being strict with ids. They always
check everywhere, but you can get into some places (clubs)
with foreign id (not a passport). Perhaps you could borrow a
21+ friend's id card (as long as he/she resembles you
slightly getting into clubs isn't that hard-but this does
of course depend on the spot). But do not attempt to buy
alcohol at a liquor store w/ a fake.
It is possible to get served w/out id in other places. I was
in downtown Manhatten last week at a restaurant and they did
not ask for id (i'm 20-look about my age)-a shock after
    being in Boston.
But anyway-just have fun, and if you drink, be careful and
    responsible...
