I know this isn't 100% travel related but I will seek your
assistance anyways. I was speaking with my gf the other
day about moving to her house in America. We plan to marry
but one thing I am curious about is; is the rumour I have
heard that if we marry I can obatin a green card/resident
alien permit. Any info you can provide or website address
with relevant info is greatly appreciated. Ta muchly!

Yes you will get a green card if you marry there in the
states. There are quite a few things that you will want to
do to prepare for it though. Save any correspondance that
you and your girlfriend might have had, and letters from
other people mentioning your relationship, picutres, lease's
anything that has both of your names on it. Be warned that
within the last couple of years things have been made much
more difficult buy immigration. You also won't be able to
leave the country for 2 years.......
I won't go on too much about it, a friend of mine has just
gone through the process and I'm a Yank in Australia about to
head home with my Kiwi wife and I'm getting prepared for all
    sorts of headaches.
Write me via e-mail if you've got any questions and I'll be
happy to answer them if I can.

I have gone through the immigration stuff when I married my
husband who is from El Salvador. I don't understand the
"not allowed to travel for 2 years" that Matt mentioned. A
few months after my husband received his temporary green
card we went to visit his family and had no problems.
After two years, you have to send more proof that you are
still together and then you get the permanent green card.
You may even want to look into the fiance visa. A great
site with tons of info is Siskind, Susser, Haas & Devine's
    site at
    http://www.visalaw.com.
    Good Luck!
