Mark, you may get more (positive) responses if you post
this message on the "Europe" branch. Good luck!
What, Dublin, California?
Dublin, a suburb of San Francisco, undoubtedly has some
cheap pubs. Cheaper but less interesting than those in San
Francisco or even Jack London Square in Oakland. Have a
great trip (I've heard there's another Dublin somewhere,
but can't say for sure). Good on ya, helping the U.S.
economy.
Why are Americans taking the name of old European towns for
their new ones?
Gee, of all the things to worry about. As far as I know,
the name can still be used in Ireland, so it wasn't
"taken," strictly speaking. I think you'll find this is
done around the world. It is more often a sign of
flattery, or fond remembrances by people who moved from the
other country. It's not just European names, by the way (or
are you Eurocentric?). There's Lebanon and many other
Middle Eastern names. There's even a Johannesburg in the
California desert (formerly big mining town).
As an American I can tell you that we steal all of our
names from other countries. I mean why the hell not.
What you think the Ireland could take a break from killing
each other to give a f**k about our names? Do you think the
British are going to invade us? That didn't work so well
last time. And as for all of our Mexican names in the west
we're not to worried, they're having a hard time sneaking
in to pick vegetables for $.45 a hour. Moral of the story,
we don't believe in morals. We don't have to, we have the
best weapons in the world!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA Sorry,
unfortunately that also means we don't have any class or
depth.
Gee, I thought we were talking about Dublin, Ohio. Thought
you might be interested in how that fine little city, near
Columbus, stole its name:
Dublin history:
The settlement of this area began in 1802 when Peter and
Benjamin Sells, of Huntington, Pennsylvania, came to
purchase 400 acres of land for their brother, John.
Later, in 1808, John and his family came to live. John Sells
and John Shields, an Irishman, began surveying lots in 1810.
It is said that Mr. Sells let Mr. Shields name their town.
He said this, after making his decision: "If I have the
honor conferred upon me to name your village, with the
brightness of the morn, and the beaming of the sun on the
hills and dales surrounding this beautiful valley, it would
give me great pleasure to name your new town after my
birthplace, Dublin,Ireland."
I want to thank all the fucking morons who responded to my
asking for help with their smart ass comments. Of course
you idiots know it is Dublin Ireland. Thanks for the help:(
I hope you all go to hell.
at least while theyre in hell youll be up in heaven.
although you probably wont find many "loose women" there.
If the US didn't take European or Mexican or Middle Eastern names of existing town, we would not have this kind of problem (Dublin, Ireland, Dublin, Ohio, or Dublin, California...)
BTW, thanks for the information, Elwood.
you're the fucking moron who posted an Ireland question on
the North American TT. Use your brain, nimwit.
P.S. No need for attitudes like yours in my beautiful city
of Dublin. Please reconsider your travel plans. PLEASE!!
