Good luck.
bh
you asked about churchill downs in louisiville, and we just
had the derby this past weekend. if you're interested in
coming to the derby sometime, the partying starts on
thursday night (the race is run the first saturday in may),
so come early. this year it was $35 admission, maybe more
for grandstand seats. in the infield, it's like mini mardi
gras without all the masks. good fun, though. there's
usually a spring and fall meet and each goes for maybe three
weeks, with racing 4 days a week. (or maybe i'm thinking of
keeneland). if you're not interested in all the derby hype
and are just into horse racing, i might suggest keeneland
racetrack in lexington. it's a bit over an hour from
louisville and the track is much prettier. and it's only
like $2.50 admission, free parking, and not as crowded
usually. the two biggest races there are the breeder's cup
during the fall meet, and the bluegrass stakes, during the
spring meet, which ran from the end of march through mid-may
this year.

Austin is NOT "Cowtown"- that is Fort Worth, Texas!!! Austin
is known for such things as Hippie Hollow, Sixth Street, and
state government, but rodeos aren't on the itinerary there!
If you're looking for a rodeo to attend, go to:
http://www.mesquiterodeo.com
The Mesquite Championship Rodeo is in its 46th season this
year and runs every Friday and Saturday night,
April-October. It's $8.00 per adult to get in, or $15.00
with the BBQ dinner. This rodeo is nationally televised, and
very good!
There is also the rodeo in the Fort Worth Stockyards, but
I'm not sure of the dates and times. I know it doesn't run
as frequently as Mesquite.
We also have a horse racing track here in the Dallas-Fort
Worth metroplex: Lone Star park. Here's their website:

Good Luck!
What's your scene (isn't that a Hoodoo gurus aong?)
Big indie touring acts
Liberty Lunch 2nd. St. and Guadalupe
Blue's--Top of the Mark, Antone's
Touring indie/punk--Emo's 6th and Red River
Cheap local bands--Hole in the Wall 2600 N. Guadalupe
Folky stuff--La Zona Rosa, Cactus Cafe, Austin City Limits
tapings (check out the Daily Texan for details)
Progressive Country--Broken Spoke S. Lamar
Grab a Chronicle--these are probably all hopelessly outdated
after a year.
For cheap beers and non frat-rat nightlife head away from
6th Street.
Ever been to the Calgary Stampede? The whole city parties
for 10 days. Check out Dusty's Saloon after the parade.
You will find Lake Tunica, Mississippi just outside of
Memphis, Tenn. Very nice secluded land casino's. Wish you
lots of LUCK.
