Thanks.

I was in NYC in 1995 for the 4th of July. We headed down to
the Battery Park area. The fireworks were being launched
from boats in the river. Quite stunning. BE warned there
are TONS of people that go to this thing. Try not to bring
huge camera or backpack. Try to keep everything as close to
your person as possible. The crowds were pretty well behaves
and there are a lot of police roaming around.

the fireworks used to be from battery park (southernmost
point of manhattan). they are now done on the east side of
town over the east river. the fireworks are three identical
displays which are set off along the river from 23rd st to
42 st. you can view from riverside drive which is closed off
for the event, or for a fee from roosevelt island in the
middle of the river. there are also boat cruses but they
cant get too close. the riverside drive is a mad house -
people start assembling in the morning. I dont know where I
will view from this year. perhaps from one of the bridge
    walkways....

My favorite fireworks viewing spot is on the FDR and 14th
street on the East River. They close down the FDR, it's
always a great crowd, everybody just hangs out, sits down,
    drinks some beers, etc.
To get there just walk East down 14th Street until you get
to the water, you'll figure it out as you certainly won't
    be the only one going!
Another great spot with a great crowd, but a little more
complicated, is to go to Williamsburg, Brooklyn on the L
train. Get off at Bedford Avenue, walk four blocks to the
water and follow the crowd to the Pier. Also, a less
crowded great viewing spot. And ther's much fun to be had
    in Williamsburg as well!

the best place is from waterside, at 27 street and the east
river. you need to live at waterside or know someone who
does to get a pass to get into the area. i may have extra
passes (i usuall get the max amount and have a few extras)
