I'm going to take a trip down Mississippi Highway 1 from
Helena to Vicksburg. Any suggestions as to what to see /
look out for? Recommended Juke Joints, side trips, eats.
Robert Johnson fans please respond!

I have been on that route a few times. There really are
some good places to see. First, I think a great Southern
town is Rosedale, Mississippi. It is right on the River and
is everything (and more) that one thinks of as a sleepy
Southern town. Another contender would be Rolling Fork. Go
off Route 1 at Rosedale and go into Pace. They still have
one of the few holdout Chinese grocery stores. Decades ago
the Chinese owned lots of grocery stores in the Delta. In
the days of 7-11 most have closed. But the one in downtown
Pace is still open (as of two years ago). Go further east
to Cleveland, MS. NICE college town (Delta State) with a
neat downtown and some real good eateries.
Speaking of eateries go into Clarksdale and ask for the name
of the famous Lebanese restaurant. It has been there
forever and is famous throughout Mississippi (its name
escapes me at the present). If you are into it, there are
some casinos just across the River from Helena and also at
    Greenville.
Helena is a great city (almost like a bigger ROsedale). You
need to stay at the Edwardian Inn (I think that is the name)
in Helena. A great big Inn on a hill in Helena. Neat place
    with neat people.
I do not know if you have ever been to Mississippi,
especially the Delta. Yes, it is flat and it is poor. But
it truly is a beautiful place in my mind and I would go back
for another visit in a heartbeat.
    Have a great time!!!!!

  2. Vicksburg Eating Added by: larry

I don't know about Vicksburg music/nightlife, if there is
any, but I can recommended these two restaurants:
    1. Lucky Fisherman, a mile or south of town on the main
drag (ASK), a raucous all-you-can-eat seafood place, and
where the crawfish is truly delicious rather than just spicy
hot. I went there solo and met nice people and had a jolly
    grand time.
    2. Burger Village, in the middle of town, a strange name for
a place that serves wonderful southern black food,
delicious, cheap and very kindly people.
Plus, if money's tight, Ryans (at one of the malls) is
alwasy a great place to gorge yourself. Walnut Hills
Retaurant downtown is a family style sit-down place in an
old house with great food and "excrutiatingly correct"
southern hospitality -- either you know what I mean or
    you'll find out.
Vicksburg has an easy-to-find website to help you locate
    this stuff.
I found the Vicksburg Battlefield Park very interesting. If
nothing else, the sunset from Fort Hill (north end of the
    Confederate lines) is unbeatable.
Sounds like you're in for a fun trip!
