Is there anyway I can get a subway map of NYC on the internet.
I want to see where I have to go before I get there....or is it easy to pick up a subway map at the airport ( La Guardia)??
Also, about the metro card, is this a popular and easy way to get around??
Does it make you stand out as an obvious tourist if you have one of these..or is it better to buy a whole load of subway tokens ??
Thanks

Hi, once you get into the city, each station has a token
booth (entrances with green globes are always open w/clerk,
red globes have limited time entry or no clerks).
at the booth you can pick up a map. each entrance with a
booth also has a wall size bus and subway map, as well as a
"neighborhood map" which shows all the local streets and
attractions.
metro cards are used my most, because you get a discount
with them (30 day unlimited, 7 day unlimited, or any
purchase above $15 you recieve %10 additional ride credit).
stay near the token booth or the yellow platform signs that
indicate the center of the cars if you are nervous.
this site has a current map and clicking on the area
enlarges the view:

have a nice trip !
There is something SO sexy about you.

Hi Lola,
A couple of adds to Claire's message...
Do not hesitate to use a Metrocard-most native New Yorkers
do. When you get to the ticket booth, just tell the agent
that you what you'd like on the card:
7 day unlimited costs $16.00 and entitles you to exactly
what it says...7 days of unlimited rides. If you are
travelling with friends, you will not be able to beat the
system by passing you card back to them because once you
scan, you cannot scan again for 18 minutes
30 unlimited is, I believe $ 60.
I have heard of a one day Fun Pass that is supposed to be
offered through hotels-$ 4/unlimited rides for 24
hours...not sure if it is around yet.
The NYC subways run 24 hours, though not all trains run at
all times. Make sure you check on the map!
As a girl who often commutes alone, I would take the subway
alone after 11 PM or so...it just gets a little creepy
because trains tend to be quieter and less busy later at
night.
Even after using NYC subways for 10 years, there are times
that I need help with directions. Don't hesitate to ask!
I find that most people are happy offer their advice-
sometimes three or four people will jump in with the "best"
way to get somewhere.
Please don't hesitate to post if you have any other NY City
questions. I'm a native and would be glad to offer you
advice! Welcome to the Big Apple!!
Sorry Lola, What I was trying to say in previous post is
that I wouldN'T take the trains late at night...
Dear NYC
I'm from Sydney and 5 of us ,3 teenaged, are spending a few
days in NYC at the end of this year. We are staying at the
Chelsea inn on 17th street. Can you provide any feedback
regarding it and also things to do in Nyc at that time of
year for the whole family. Also everyone is telling us we'll
freeze ,how warmly do we really need to dress. Is footwear
cheap and clothes or what is we have no idea especially as
the aus dollar isn't that good at present.regards and thanks
Don't have first hand experience w/Chelsea Inn, but heard
that it is very nice-a restored brownstone on W17th and 5th
Avenue.
You will be staying in a great area...safe neighorhood,
easy access to just about anywhere in Manhattan.
Things to do...hmmmm...that's tough 'cause there is alot
going on. Always. What do you (or better yet, the teens!)
like to do? Museums? Shop? Music? Theatre? How long will
you be here??
There are theatres and galleries near your lodging. Joyce
theatre is within a few blocks. I saw a great off-Broadway
play at the Daryl Roth theatre (Union Square and 18th
Street) called "De La Guarda"...performers are suspended by
bungee cords and perform over the audience.
Nearby SoHo (area south of Houston Street) is known for
shopping, galleries, restaurants...very trendy, artsy.
Greenwich Village is also nearby (area around West 4th
Street, Seventh Ave.) also artsy-lots of shops, people
watching.
Also great shopping on 5th Avenue and Broadway.
Since you will be here during the holidays, I'd suggest
going to see the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center (5th
Ave and 46th St). Check out the window displays at the
stores, head up to Central Park and ice skate at Wollman's
Rink. Finish the day off with a frozen hot chocolate at
Serendipitty's which is on East 61st St, I believe.
Weather here is tricky. A few years ago, we were hit with
5 or 6 snowstorms in December. For the past few years,
only a light dusting all winter. I'd count on it being
pretty cold-temps around 25F-30F.
Lots of web sites to help--try TIME OUT NY, City Search,
SIDEWALK.COM.
All sorts of clothes and shoe shopping in NY. Some of my
favorites? Century 21 on Church St. between Dey and
Cortlandt (way downtown in the Financial district). Urban
Outfitters-I am not sure Street but it is in Greenwich
Village-the teens will dig it. Great shoe deals on 8th
Street between 7th and 6th Avenue.
Let me know what else I can help with.

Hello NYER
Hello NYER,
Thankyou for the native new yorker information,we'll
certainly utilise your suggestions. We are flying in to
Newark airport and to save money on transfers for the five
of us we plan to get public transport from the airport to
Chelsea. This will be early afternoon and we were looking at
the path train. In light of our luggage is this an o.k
option. Again we plan to do likewise when leaving NYC to fly
out of La Guardia though we will need to be at La Guardia
for a 9am flight. is this feasible. thanks again ,I'd like
to think I'd be as helpful if you ever needed information
about Sydney.
