Hey hey hey,
Great to be back on this tree and entering something with
intentions of travelling very soon (July 99). A good friend
who I met while travelling Jordan and Syria in 93 is going
to Brazil for July and part of August. I plan to join them
for two weeks. Does anyone have any experience in backwoods
of the Amazon. Are there flights half way in like Corcovado
in Costa Rica. Are the boats are good method of transport.
What shots should be required for travelling. Are there any
major sites we should hit between the larger cities and
accessing the jungle.
All the best!
Please respond to cary.warden@canada.sun.com
Cheers
Cary

Can you just buy a car and then get the permits or is it too
much hassle?

I entered Colombia on a 30-day tourist visa which runs out
on the 27th. I was was wondering if anyone has any
experience with what happens if one overstays a tourist
visa by 2 or 3 days. I did try to get my visa extended
here in Cali, but they told me that I'd have to go to
Bogota to get an extension (given that I have and Indian
passport and that my original visa was approved in
Bogota). This option would be expensive and a huge hassle.
So should I play it save an get out on the 27th, or can I
stay for an extra couple of days without getting into
trouble?
P.S. Let me know if you have any questions on Cali. I've
spent close to a month here

I've read a few things about the caracas airport not being safe at night in the guidebook and post cards section. Anyone with recent experiences? Are taxis from the airport safe, or is it better to arrange transport through a hotel? Any must sees in Caracas? Or is it better to hang at the beach? On a S. american scale how safe is Caracas compared to Lima?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi!
My sister and I are planning a trip to Peru this
July/August.
We are currently planning our trip, realizing that we have
far too little time to spend in the country (6 wks).
Where would you do a 4-5-day Jungle trip? Pucallpa, Iquitos
or Manu? What about the costs too?
And which (of the 100's) of the ruins are REALLY worth a
look? I guess, the novelty value of these ruins decreases
with the number of the seen ones.
Thank you for your help!
cheers,
:) mary

great. If you have any suggestions!!!
I spent 2 months in Guatemala. If you have any questions, I

Hey there fellow travellers,
I'm in need of some info concerning Northeastern Peru. I've got two weeks to check out the area between Tarapoto and Iquitos. First, what is the most convenient airport to fly from Lima; Moyobamba, Tarpoto or Yurimaguas. Anyone know of which days planes fly to any of these towns? Any cost diferences?
I'm hoping to travel from Yurimaguas to Iquitos by boat. Any guesses as to frequncies and travel time? LP says 3 days. Is this reasonable? How is the road from Yurimaguas to Tarapoto these days?
Also, has anyone done Pacaya-Samaria reserve from Lagunas? Can anyone recommend a guide? Has the cost become outrageous? Thanks for any info. Cheers.

Would the bus be better?
Also I'm veggie, is it possible to get food on these
trips. I hear the meals are fish which I don't eat.
Thanks

We're off to Equador in a couple of weeks and we want to arrange a jungle trek upon arrival in Quito. Any recommendations as to the best guides/company to contact and where best to go in the Amazon? Ideally we'd like to spend 3-4 nights camping in some relative luxury (ie, with a tent over our heads!), although not with a large group of "moaners" if you get my meaning! Any suggestions greatly received.

Hi people,
Has anyone recently made it up to the Elqui Valley in Chile
(near La Serena)? I'm a big fan of Gabriela Mistral and
wondered if it is worth going to see her birthplace. From
reading her poems, it sounds like a magical place far
removed from the 20th century. I've read in LP that the area
is now notorious for UFO/New Age communities - what's the
lowdown on THAT?
Thanks, Kad.

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip driving fromCanada
(Alberta) down the American west coast and then around
Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa
Rica, Panama, Belize and hopefully most of South America and
Brasil for Carnival and then Back to New York City. Our plan
is to drive the whole way and camp in our van where
possible. Taking about 6 to 9 months to do so depending on
funds, weather, local atmosphere and how much time it
actually takes. Our van in equipt to camp with four people,
so what we're looking for is another couple to join us and
share costs for the trip or a few couples to join in for
different parts of the trip. We're both 23 I'm Canadain and
she's British and have spent most of the past three years
travelling. Neither of us smoke or use drugs but do not care
if others do enjoy to do so as long as there capable of
respecting our choice not to. This trip is a few months off
because we are still both in the planning and saving stage
but would like to see if there is anyone interested in
joining us. We hope to start out from Canada sometime in
October 1999. If anyone is interested email me at the
address above or leave a post here.
-
I'd also like to hear from anyone who's done this trip or
any part of it about the must and must not do's. Thank you!

Greetings.
I expect to be heading down to Lima then the Cusco area
in the next two weeks, kind of short notice, and I've been
getting conflicting info about which
immunisations/vaccinations - Typhoid,Yellow Fever, Malaria,
etc - are strictly necessary.
At this point I don't think I'll be getting to the jungle
and I don't believe in allowing hypodermics or critter-
bearing meds into my bod unless crucial.
A travel agent told me this am that NO shots were needed.
I find this hard to believe. Also, what is this about a
vaccination card. Is it needed for entry into Peru, is it
simply to prove I'm up to date on vacs and not a plague-
bearing gringa?
Any info on the above would be gratefully received.
Ta !

After a great treck into the Pantanal with GREEN-TRACK, I
was going on to Bolivia. However, that was not gonna' be
easy, but certainly another travelexperience though.
First I went to the police station in Corumba and got my
exit stamp, no problem. Then I went to the border partly to
get my tickets for La Paz, which Murilo from GREEN-TRACK
was kind enough to help me out with, and after that to sort
out immigration. Well that was not going to be easy. First
a Bolivian immigration officer rejected me, because I had
not brought my vaccination card. Well, entering Bolivia,
that was new to me, but no problem, I still had time to go
back to my hotel in Corumba and fetch my card. I told
Murilo, who was talking to a couple of backpackers on their
way to Brazil. Immediately he offered to run me back, and
after a brief "how was Bolivia"-chat we left the guys and
walked down to his car. Suddenly a macho-Bolivian police
officer in civilian started telling us to get out of the
car, and the same to another guy. Another couple of
officials arrived and started searching the car. I thought
someone had placed cocaine in the car or something, but it
turned out the story was very different;
on the way from the immigration office to the car
(approximately 40-50 meters) the alcoholsmelling owner of
COLIBRI TOURS,Claudine's husband, had been threatening
Murilo on his life. The reason for this, because Murilo had
employed me to work for him, taking away business from
COLIBRI TOURS !!! Never I had heard such bull.... !!!
We were all pulled into the station, where Murilo who
showed a little more sense than his colleague, and
competitor, explained the situation as it was. We were let
go after paying off the Official 50 Reais. How the other
guy got out of there I don't know, because he did not have
a cent to his name.
Anyways, we waited for the other travellers to give them a
ride back as well. While doing so, our "friend" from COLIBRI
TOURS came back up to us and threatened Murilo once again,
before setting off.......
I know the Pantanal touring business is quite competitive,
and I will not here advise one or another operator, as I
have not experienced everyones services. All I can say, is
that when you come to Corumba, don't jump on the first and
smoothest talking operator, who approaches you. Hang out in
town for a day or two, visit them all, talk to other
travellers and then go with your own best intuition. Ask
about the guides and their experience, and what animals
have been seen during the last week or two, because that is
what you are most likely to see as well.
Not all operators provide sodas, beers or snacks in camp, so
make sure you load up on that as well !
ENJOY THE PANTANAL, IT IS VERY BEAUTYFUL !

Here is the report of a victim of the Bolivian Rapist EL
NEGRO!!!
Please tell this story to every traveller in South America
-----------------------------------------------------------
La Paz 7th October 1997
DEAR FELLOW TRAVELLERS
I feel it is important to tell as many travellers as
possible in South America about the bad experience I had in
Rurrenabaque. This is my story; I went on a tour with my
friend and two other travellers for seven days in the jungle
with ECO-TOURS. We felt very lucky yhat we were going with
the 'highly recommended' guide -'NEGRO' ISRAEL JANCO. The
special extra I got on the tour was that this nice friendly
man decided to sexually assault me.
On the last night of the tour Negro Israel Janco gave me
five pills that he said were for 'anti-swelling' (I had a
badly swollen hand). I now know they were valium and they
were given so that Negro could do whatever he wanted with me
and hope I would be sleeping too deeply to know about it.
But I did wake up to find my trousers ripped and Negro
Israel Janco sexually assaulting me.
Back in Rurrenabaque I discovered that Negro Israel Janco
had raped another traveller last year. It was a big town
scandal. The girl went to the police and town government.
ECO-TOURS was closed only to be re-opened as soon as the
girl left town. A few weeks later Negro was back working as
a guide. I decided I had to do something about this man. I
have spent five weeks of doing everything in my power to do
something about Negro Israel Janco; five weeks of daily
visits to the seemingly co-operative police and town
government where they forever promised -manana, manana -and
delivered nothing; after fruitless phonecalls to 'my' German
Embassy where I was greeted by nothing but indifference,
still Eco-tours was open and Negro Israel Janco was swimming
with gringas in the Pampas.
Finally after four weeks Eco-Tours got closed down -but
despite the fact that the police knew exactly where Negro
Israel Janco was -hiding in the Pampas -and despite endless
assurances that they would go and arrest him, still he was
free.
The police were full of words and no action. I was banging
my head against a brick wall. In the end I considered paying
myself to transport the police to the Pampas to arrest him.
But I came to understand that then I would have to stay
indefinitly to ensure he would be brought to trial since I
know how easy it would be for Negro to buy his way out of
trouble. What finally made me know that I could do no more,
that I would not see Negro Israel Janco arrested whatever I
did, was that I heard he had escaped to Brazil.
So I left Rurrenabaque feeling I had wasted so much time and
energy to ensure this man was punished and would not work
with tourists again.
Why am I telling you all this?
From my experience over the last five weeks I have learnt I
cannot have any faith in Bolivian law. The reality is that
in towns such as Rurrenabaque there is no real law to ensure
justice for women who are raped or sexually assaulted. The
local people sort the problems out themselves -a father or
brother shoots the perpetrator. For travellers there is
nothing, no justice, the assault of somebody who leaves town
is easily forgotten -especially when bribes are offered to
the authorities to help them forget. There is every
possibility that Negro Israel Janco will be back in buisness
working as a guide in a few months.
The only hope I have that Negro Israel Janco won't work
again and have the opportunity to rape more women travellers
is to tell my story to other travellers and ask that it is
not forgotten amongst you. Please spread this story. Please,
if you're going to Rurrenabaque be aware of this man and
help ensure he never gets the opportunity to work with
tourists again. Ask in the agencies, hotels and restaurants
if he is back working. Make sure Rurrenabaque as a town does
not forget that this man is a rapist.
Tourism is valuable to Rurrenabaque -if the authorities feel
that Rurre is getting a bad name because of what happened
maybe, miracle of miracles, they will arrest him when he
returns. This will only happen if the town knows that you
and every other traveller knows about Negro Israel Janco and
my fruitless attempts to get him arrested.
If he does return to Rurre he will either work in NAHAMA
TOURS owned by one of his brothers or in a new agency opened
by the family to replace Eco-Tours. I am quite sure that the
other agencies would not employ him. To avoid any confusion
-there is a guide called Negro working for Fluvial Tours
-this is a different man.
I don't believe in anything anymore. I have used every last
drop of energy with this thing, but I can't just forget and
shut-up, words can be powerful, so please help me spread my
story and keep it alive. Help ensure that the police and the
authorities don't forget about what happened to me and don't
continue to allow known rapists to work with travellers and
go unpunished.
Thanks for listening!

Hi.
I am sitting here pondering what to omit and what to
include in my suitcases...And also wondering what kind of
bags or case I should bring...Going to Italy, Spain,
Ireland between June and Sept. this year...Please give me
some helpful tips for packing....Will be flying and doing
the eurail thing. What is the most appropriate kind of
luggage?
For train travel, what is best? Travelling light sounds
cool, but would that mean that I have to buy a lot of daily
articles and stuff overseas? ...I have never been on a trip
longer than four weeks....and am inexperienced in train
travel in Europe...please help me.....I am a bit
overwhelmed by this packing problem....
Will appreciate any helpful tips on packing for a 6-month
trip.....
Best wishes.

I am planning to travel to Peru in late June -- Lima, Cuzco,
etc. (but not the northeast part of Peru). Just wondering
if I should be seriously concerned about catching any
mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, dengue fever, etc. In
other words, does the average visitor to Peru return home
with perhaps a case of TD but usually nothing else? Second,
is daytime bus travel relatively safe between the major
tourist areas? Should I be any more concerned about highway
accidents than I would be using Greyhound or buses along the
Amalfi coast in Italy, etc.? Would appreciate any advice on
my trip. Thanks.

Hello everyone. I need some critical info on travel from
Lima to Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Can anyone tell me a
reliable price for bus/train/airplane fares to Cuzco from
Lima. Plus, I am going during the end of July, which is
apparently Peru's indepedence. Will prices be to high to
even consider visiting then? Can I do this trip in a week,
and what cost should I plan for(entire trip)?
Any help would be much appreciated-

appreciated.

I was surprised to seee that safety in Colombia was such a
hot topic. Six days after posting, there were a dozen follow
up posts, and I appreciate all the positive comments my post
received. The one thing that was misunderstood, or at least
wrongly interpreted by some of you, was about the women in
Colombia. My comment was not a sexist one, and I wish the
pseudo-machos out there would abstain from remarks that are
degrading; my post was about safety, not about "getting free
babes in Colombia."
I also thank the people who sent e-mails, I cannot
personnally answer to all of them.
Today┤s topic is narrower, safety in San Agustφn. This is a
very touchy topic with local people, and I┤ll spit it out,
after all I┤m no longer part of the local scene. Tourism in
San Agustφn has decreased dramatically over the last two
years, partly because of the general image of Colombia in
Europe and the U.S., and partly because of safety concerns.
To those who don┤t know what I┤m talking about, San Agustφn
is a little town in the Colombian Andes, cradle of one of
the most ancient civilizations in America (started 3300 BC)
that left a most interesting megalithic culture. It is 500
km south of Bogotß, 120 km. east of Popayßn, approximately.
Tourists visit San Agustφn for the stone sculptures (the
archaeological park was declared historical heritage of
humanity by Unesco in 1995), for great horseback riding,
trekking to the headwaters of the Magdalena river, a great
three to five day trek with horses in the Andes. However
many people decide (making a big mistake in my views) to
skip San Agustφn, on safety grounds, listening more to
rumors than to facts.
San Agustφn cannot be reached by air. The closest airports
are Neiva (four hours away) and Popayßn (six hours away).
There are basically four ways of reaching San Agustφn by
road.
1- From Bogotß. Take a night bus (perfectly OK, I do it all
the time), or a morning bus or van, no later than 9 AM. You
don┤t want to arrive in the middle of the night, as you
would have a hard time finding a hotel room, and it might be
somewhat spooky, the town goes to bed early. If you have no
choice and take a noon or afternoon bus, once you reach
Pitalito (30 km. before San Agustφn), the driver may tell
you he┤s not going any further, it┤s too risky, the
guerrillas are burning buses, or whatever story, that is
BULLSHIT; he┤s telling you that just because it makes no
economic sense to him to drive further for a handfull of
passengers. Just request he go on, or ask him to pay the cab
fare to San Agustφn RIGHT NOW.
2- From Mocoa. This road is at present pretty much
untravelled by foreigners, the guerrillas prohibit traffic
between 6 PM. and 6 AM, and have several road blocks, so
does the army, which acts as a deterrant. It is a shame,
since the road from Mocoa to Pasto is fabulous, and I have
never heard of any tourists having any problems on that
road.
3- Long way from Popayßn (through La Plata). As it is an
unpaved road half the way, avoid night buses.
4- Short way from Popayßn. Get an early start, NEVER travel
at night. There are reports of robbery (bandits, not
guerrillas) on this road, mostly in the afternoon. If you
hear that a robbery occurred the day before, take the long
way, robberies usually happen several days in a row. The
last time I heard of such action, it was more than a year
ago, and I also heard that the bandits had been caught.
There are occasionally roadblocks form either the army
and/or the guerrilla, tourist have no reason to fear either
one. A few years back I was travelling to Popayßn, and about
twenty guerrillas got a (free) ride on our bus. In the
middle of nowhere they got off, another twenty or so had
hitched a ride on the previos bus. After that they asked the
driver to get off the bus, talked to him for fifteen
minutes, he got back on the bus and we went on. They did not
talk to anybody else, nor were they threatening. It looked
like business as usual.
Now about San Agustφn itself. As you get off the bus you
will be greeted by at least a half dozen of "tourism
informants" who will offer to tak you to your hotel (they
receive a commission), sell you tours in jeep (a great tour
indeed), horseback tours (also great). Altough the situation
feels threatening, it is not. Business is slow, so they HAVE
TO be aggressive; if you don┤t fight you don┤t eat. However
they are ruthless. If you say you go to a certain hotel,
they may well tell you that the owner died, that it went
under, etc. but that they will take you to a better (and
cheaper of course) hotel; the truth is that they get a
better commission where they take you to than at you planned
hotel. Stick to your gun, and go where you planned. In the
works is to have the tourist police to greet tourists at the
bus stop and direct them to a municipal tourism office. The
day it happens, hen will have teeth... Many tourists want to
stay at one of the several hotels in the outskirts of town.
I hate to report that all but one (and maybe some of the
newer ones I┤m not aware of) have been victims of armed
robbery in the last twelve months. As far back as I┤ve been
going to San Agustφn, the hotel CASA de NELLY has never been
robbed. CASA CAMPESINA was robbed once last year, it seems
that the thieves were after an photographer who was staying
there, but they were out of luck, he was watching a movie in
town that night and went back after midnight; however they
broke into his room and stole some money and a cheap camera.
COPACABANA was robbed once, nobody knows the details, the
owner is a rather discrete person. HACIENDA ANACAONA
(expensive) was robbed before it opened, and the owners
decided to return to France and subcontract operations. CASA
del SOL was robbed first three years ago (a Colombian
teenager was raped), then again in march last year, six guys
with guns robbed about twenty five tourists (ten thousand
dollars in cash, plus cameras and others, the thieves
mistook the owner's teen age boy for a girl and wanted to
rape him), then again in July (five or six Israelis robbed.
The owners, a Colombian and a German ladies, after the march
robbery stayed for six months at a hotel in town, and then
rented an apartment also in town, as they were (still are?)
afraid of sleeping in their own hotel (the funniest of all
is that in order to keep their customers captive on the hill
they warned them not to go to town, that they would surely
be robbed!, the idea was that they would not spend their
money else where). I have stayed there a couple of times,
until the robbery three years ago: I don┤t anymore.
I┤m not justifying the thieves in any way but think about
it: Colombia is a rather poor country, San Agustφn is a poor
town in that country, in which there is no employment, and a
constant flux of tourists come and flash their relative
wealth. What happens? Envy. By staying in a hotel out of
town, where it is so easy to cut off the telephone, where
the police cannot go after dark with order of the brigade,
where the closest neighbours are a quarter mile away, where
it is so easy to do a robbery, YOU ARE SETTING YOURSELF UP,
do not tempt the devil! I have NEVER heard of a single
robbery in any hotel in town in the ten years I┤ve been
going to San Agustφn. There is plenty of choice from real
dives to good hotels in town, so why look for trouble and
stay out of town? If what you want is smoke all day (I don┤t
mean tobacco), there are plenty of places where you can do
it freely, without taking stupid risks like staying in a
hotel out of town. I┤m not recommending any place in
particular, this is not a publicity post, it┤s about safety.
SAFETY ON THE TOURS: I have heard of an occasional robbery
at the Salto del Morti±o; I wouldn┤t be too concerned there,
it┤s not frequent. Do not camp ther though. On the horse
tour, La Chaquira is known for robberies, so do not take
money, do not take a camera on that tour. If you absolutely
want to take your camera, skip La Chaquira on the tour. If
you don┤t have anything, nothing will happen to you beside
the scare. Everybody is warned about that site, however
tourists go there everyday with money, camera, gold chains,
etc.. and once in a while somebody is robbed. I still think
I would buy a lottery ticket before betting on being robbed
there.

Thanks, Peter.

Hi everyone,
I am planning to go to Brazil and Venezuela in January next
year. I need some information on Venezuela, particularly
Caracas and Margarita island, and remote jungle regions. Is
Caracas expensive for accommodation, food, cabs etc? Is it
dangerous? What is the nightlife like? Is Margarita island
expensive too?
Any information would be greatly appreciated, just send me

Has anyone heard about the closure of Quito airport? I
have just tried to book a ticket to fly into Quito on the
30th June 1999, but have been told I can't. I can only fly
to Guayaquil on the coast. Then, apparently, take an 8
hour bus ride to Quito. Does that sound right. Does
anyone know why it has closed? Has anyone taken the bus?
Any advice on Quito or Guayaquil would be appreciated.

Called Citibank last night. Here's the deal for United
States based Citibank cardholders (and possibly for
Citibank cardholders in other countries) who are considering
use of the Card in South America.
Even if you prepay what you plan on spending on holiday, you
will be charged 6% of the amount you draw out of your
account in cash advance, currency conversion & other type of
"service fees."
It also has been my personal experience that some vendors
will tack on a 10% "use fee" if you wish to pay by plastic
(this specifically happened in Ecuador). Additionally, I
have noticed that most places that accept credit card
payments for purchases tend to be the more expensive
shops anyway. So, what do you save by using them?
Lastly, a Citibank representative confirmed that going
through airport security will demagnatize their (and
possibly all of your) credit card(s). A travel-related shop
may have something in which you can protect the card from
demagnatization).
The additional fees are important for someone who is trying
to do a budget holiday, and / or plans on being away from
home for awhile.

Warning
Lonely Planet has received several credible reports of very serious
incidents involving the drugging and rape of women tourists who've
taken guided jungle and pampas tours with independent guides around
Rurrenabaque. Contrary to what it says on pages 432 to 433 of Lonely
Planet's Bolivia guide, women tourists should not in any circumstances
take tours on their own or in pairs with independent guides, but
should stick to larger group tours run by reputable agencies. Avoid
rogue guides or those who have broken away from established agencies,
including any who may be recommended in this book.

How can I support myself in Chile, in or near a ski resort,
for this winter season? My Spanish is VERY limited as
yet but is bound to improve as the situations demand... I
have experience working in ski resorts, teaching English and
horseriding in Spain (informally teaching children,) a
degree, two years' in journalism/business, computer
literacy... and hankering to get there without hanging
around and saving too much beforehand... I'm 24 y.o female
and suffering from snowboarding withdrawals but I hear there
is little to no work for foreigners in resorts ... I'd be
happy doing anything ... is it possible to get some work
proofreading English documents?
If anyone has any ideas or experience I'd be grateful ....
no matter how bizarre they might be. Hit me with them!
many thanks!

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip driving fromCanada
(Alberta) down the American west coast and then around
Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa
Rica, Panama(Maybe father south we'd like to go to Brasil
for Carnival but have be warned off driving there), Belize
and then Back to New York City. Our
plan is to drive the whole way and camp in our van where

I'd also like to hear from anyone who's done this trip or
any part of it about the must and must not do's. Thank you!

I was planning a road trip from Alaska to South America with a friend, leaving around Sept 99 with the idea of reaching Tierra del Fuego for New Year's. However we're now considering flying to South America in Dec 99, and driving to the US instead. We figure that we can purchase a car once we arrive, but we also wanted to know about shipping costs for sending a car from the US to SA. If anyone has any info or could point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated. Also would like to hear from anyone with any suggestions on such a trip, or anyone who would like to join us for all or part. We're very flexible & open. Thanks!!

We're spending 2 months in South America in July & August
(mainly Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador). From previous travels
we've found we usually have the best experiences and found
the best places away from the well-trodden tourist and
backpacker trails.
Does anybody have any experiences or suggestions on places
to go in this area of the world which aren't in Lonely
Planet and therefore (usually) not over-run with travellers
and tourists. We've got nothing against Lonely Planet and
backpackers/travellers per se, but the untouristed places
seem to provide the most memorable experiences.

- For fares: look under "Tarifas" -enter departure &
destination I think costs are in thousands of pesos. "Ida"
is one way, "Ida y vuelta" is rtn.
- For flights & Schedules: look under "Vuelos"

Does anyone have an idea of flight prices from Cartagena:
-- to Bogota?
-- to San Andres?
Secondly, is it cheaper to buy a round trip ticket from US
to Costa Rica and try to exchange the return ticket for a
return from Colombia; OR buy a one-way from US to CR and a
one-way from Colombia to US?
Thank you!

I have read that there is an LAB airpass available for
US$150 that allows return flights to four cities in Bolivia
if purchased outside the country. Does anyone know if this
is still available, and if so what conditions are
attached? In particular I am interested in:
(1) Which locations you can fly to,
(2) Are the trips all return from one city, or can they be
done in a circular fashion
(3) Is the air pass recommended!
Looking at spending about three weeks in Bolivia,
travelling from Peru through to Brazil. If the airpass is
no longer available, is there a flight from Sta Cruz
through to Quijarro or Corumba? How much, and how often
does it operate?
Thanks in advance.

My friends and I are traveling through Costa Rica by
bus to Panama then by plane or boat to Colombia...we have
3-4 weeks to complete our San Jose-Panama City- Cartagena
trip- our questions are:
(1) Can we buy a roundtrip ticket from SFO to San Jose, CR
and then leave from Bogota instead? How much will we have to
pay in fines to the airline?
(2)or..Is it better to buy a one way to San Jose, CR and
then a one way back from Bogota? (it seems more expensive.)
Thanks for your help.

Hello fellow travellers.
We are going back to Sth America in November for the second
time. The first was not enough. We are only doing Chile this
time and I would love some info on relatively inexpensive
but decent quality places to stay in Santiago,
Concepcion,Easter Island (RapaNui). If anyone has any info
on doing some hiking on Torres del Paine Circuit and places
to stay during so and on interesting things to do in RapaNui
then I would greatly appreciate you dropping me a line.
Thanks in advance for any responce and thanks for some of
the interesting topics that come up on the Thorn Tree.

In your opinion, what is the difference between a "traveler" and a "tourist"?
I'm just wrapping up a 3 month trip in S.A. and plan to write an article on the dubious distinction between these two types of overseas adventurers. If you have any thoughts on the philosophical, material, spiritual, etc. differences -- or lack thereof -- between tourists and travelers, please post or email me directly. I'd love to hear your opinion. As for mine, well....

I was in Rurre a couple of days ago and another girl got
raped by Negro Israel. There are warnings posted all over
town and the agency for which he worked - Eco Tours - seemed
to have closed down for the time being.
In fact, we met a traveller who had been in the Pampas with
Negro for 6 days and he really recommended him. I knew about
Negro before I left home and knew the "reputable" Negro had
a missing finger so when we were approached by the shit head
Negro himself, I politely told him to bugger off. Still,
Lonely Planet needs to seriously update it's Rurre and the
rest of Bolivia too. I've never had such a crap guide book
before.
Like anything, inform yourselves BEFORE you go and use your
common sense - women should never travel alone OR in a pair.
It's best in a group of mixed sexes. On trips like those
being offered in Rurre it's not difficult to get a group
organised.

Can anyone advise me about how I could get to the Salar de
Uyuni from Northern Chile. Are there tour companies which go
from San Pedro de Atacama or from Calama, or any other
northern Chilean city. Can you do a one way tour (ie stay at
Uyuni at the end) or do you have to go back to the city you
started at. I realise it will be more expensive fron Chile,
but I'm trying to avoid the hours of travel from La Paz to
Uyuni.

I am planning a trip to SA (Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia,

thought I would do a group tour (as I am not brave enough

most of everything and at cheaper prices than other tours
(e.g. Dragoman).
Can anyone who has done a tour with Tucan please let me
know what you thought of the tour (i.e. type of travel,
accommodation, guides etc).
Or advise of other tour companies which offer reasonable
deals.

I am looking to make a quick buck and I saw a show on TLC

I have just posted a message in the ┤Women
Travellers┤section to advise women of the danger of
undertaking jungle tours from Rurrenabaque in Bolivia with
the guide ┤Negro┤, who is highly recommended in Lonely
Planet┤s Bolivia handbook. I am sorry I don┤t know his last
name but I don┤t have that handbook. Please see that
message, but in brief, Negro has a history of drugging and
raping women who participate in his jungle tours. He offers
the group tablets for mosquito bites which are either
sleeping tablets (non-victims) or valium (victims). I have
heard stories of some women being so heavily drugged that
they are not sure if they have been raped or not.
There are two guides called Negro in Rurre. The other guide
has a missing finger and is reputable. Please help me in
encouraging Lonely Planet to find some way to alert
travellers to this information. Many people continue to use
Negro┤s services as he is so highly recommended in ┤the
book┤and the there is no information available in Rurre to
warn women.
Please tell others!

any suggested routes? or would it be best to fly (if so how

Greetings, all!
I'll be in Venezuela for most of June, and have a little
dilemma. I am planning on spending the last week of my trip
diving on Bonaire, but obviously I don't want to drag my
dive gear around Venezuela for three weeks. I was thinking
of perhaps booking a room for the first and last night of my
trip, and leaving my gear there for the three weeks that
I'll be in Venezuela. Any recommendations for a decent place
where my beloved dive gear will remain unpilfered for three
weeks? I would be willing to spend a little extra for added
security. (and peace of mind) Any info would be appreciated.
Also- does anyone have any info regarding flights/boats from
Venezuela to Bonaire?
-Thanks

My friend and I will be visiting Peru and Ecuador in July
and August on a backpacking trip. We are hoping to do a fair
bit of trekking in Cotopaxi NP, Huaraz and of course the
Inca Trail, but nothing too extreme. My main Q. is exactly
how cold it is going to get, particularly at nights. we've
both got fairly good gear for walking in but need to buy new
sleeping bags. Trying to translate the manufacturers
temperature ratings into the real world is not easy and
we're also worried about keeping the sleeping bag light and
compact. Would a North Face or Snugpak -7oC be about right.
The paradox of this problem is that we need to use the same
sleeping bag for our Jungle Trips in the Amazon - how hot
and humid at night is it going to be there?
Thanks for your advice, ben
Also, can anyone reccommend any good dive sites or operators
on the coast for a PADI qualified diver? Cheers.

In my preparations for an imminent trip to SA, I stupidly
overlooked an important detail: How do I keep my insulin
cold (i.e. refrigerator temperature but not freezing)
during long bus trips, hiking trips, etc.? This is pretty
important since insulin loses its effectiveness when it
gets too hot. Anyone (diabetic or not) have any
suggestions? Most thermal packs really only work for 6 to

We have three weeks to do Costa Rica and Colombia. We're
trying to budget for the cost (temporal and financial) of
travel between the countries. What recommendations do
people have to get us from CR to the Caribbean Coast of
Colombia? We wouldn't mind stopping in Panama if cheaper
transporation calls for it; but our agenda primarily
includes the first two countries.
-- What are the buses through Panama like? How long would
it take to cross the country in buses? How much?
-- How much is a plane ticket from CR to Colombia? How
long is the ride?
-- Is there a plane that will take us straight to Cartagena
or do we have to go through Bogota?
-- And the reverse: how to get back from Colombia to Costa
Rica to catch a plane back to the US? Or should we fly
back to the US from Colombia?
-- Which airlines service these countries?
Please help! Muchisimas gracias.

How many hours the Tumbes to Quito trip?
How many buses do I have to take?
How much is the total cost in US$ dollars?
What are the paper requirements to enter Ecuador from Peru

Do you have to pay anything to enter Ecuador?
Is it true you cannot enter Ecuador after 5pm?
Whar are the names of good economic places to stay in Quito?
How much do you pay per night in Quito? (give me

We have a list for Brazilians and travelers and all the rest. If you want to find out ANY information at all, just ask. Most of us have been there and/or live there.
I lived there for six months, and spent another four months traveling into Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, and Chile. If you have any questions about these, I can answer ANYTHING immediately. But the group itself is predominately Brazil. Just come check it out, ask anything you want, and you'll get quick immediate answers. You can contribute to the conversation just as easily as well. We have a list for Brazilians and travelers and all the rest. If you want to find out ANY information at all, just ask. Most of us have been there and/or live there.

We plan to spend 3 months in SA travelling independantly
from Lima to Caracus from Noveber to January. We plan to
visit Peru, Bolivia, Equador then travel through Brazil by
boat to Manaus from where we fly back to London.
1) Is 3 months a reasonable time period for this route ?
Can anyone offer us some advice on what not to miss ?
2) We plan to do a lot of trekking, does anyone have some
good routes to offer ? We would like to try get away from
the well trodden routes.
3) Is it worth taking a tent ? Will we need it while
trekking ?
4) What weather conditions should we expect at this time of
the year ? Should we expext any transport problems ?
5) Can someone advise me on the Malaria situation in the
area ?
Thanks

of our RTW trip. Could anyone help with the following
points:
1) How easy is it to fly into S.America from the Pacific
Islands?
2) Where are the must see places?
3) How safe and easy is travel in S.America?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,
Due to time constraints, we were thinking of leaving
getting a visa for Brazil until we are in BA, Argentina.
Has anybody done this and found it to be a hassle or not?

I just got back and Sub Aqua was having problems with their
boat and my dive day got cancelled. It's been that way for
some time. Maybe try and book when you get there to save the
hassle. Quite frankly we saw everything while snorkelling
during our boat cruise and weren't too sad about missing the
diving. Save the money and do a week-long cruise instead.
Bring your snorkel gear and a light wetsuit. We saw
hammerheads, swam with penguins, sea lions and iguanas just
snorkelling. The diving costs way too much there. Like I
say, save the money and do a better boat cruise. AT LEAST a
week in duration.

don't need anyting too fancy, but I am pretty flexible for

Does anyone have info about the best airline for flying to
Quito from either Vienna or London or even Frankfurt ?
I┤m looking to stay a year but the best I┤ve heard so far
is advive telling me to get two return tickets, letting the
return flight unused in each case. This seems like such a
waste.
Alternatively, does anyone know how much a ow flight to
London from Quito costs ?
I do apologise for all these questions...I┤ve tried to sort
this out by myself but no travel agency has proved to very
helpful with this very complicated ( and -for me-
important) matter .
Thanks in advance.

I know this was somewhat addressed by a previous thread,
but I have a very specific question: is it worth hiking
the Inca Trail in July or August? Mainly considering weather
conditions and the like. I.e., will it be rainy, really cold
at night, etc. Also, someone mentioned the Inti
Raymi event in Cusco - what and when is this? Is it good
to go during that time?
Thanks

Another (desperate) try to get info on traveling in
Surinam. I'm planning on going there sometime this year
(female solo), but it seems there's not one single person
that has traveled to Surinam. I'm interested in how save it
is (not so much about the hassle from men, I'm pretty good
at ignoring that stuff). What areas are more dangerous then
others. What's the latest to go out at night without
running into trouble and so on. A friend (from Surinam)
told me this weekend that it'll be pretty dangerous...
please let me know how you experienced it!.

Five years ago, while working in Rio, I used the LP guide
to Brazil extensively. Through that book, I found the
Centro Excursionisto Brasileiro hiking group and when I
finally went on a hike, met a nice woman (a doctor, yet!)
whom I've visted (and vice versa) even after I left
Brazil. Today I fly to the States (from Africa where I
currently work), she'll fy up from Brazil and we'll get
married. Then back to our respective countries, but we'll
eventually get together full time. I should add we've used
LP books for various regions on our travels together.
Thanks LP.
p.s. if anyone gets down to Rio and likes to hike the
Centro's e-mail is ceb_brasil@geocities.com.br. They
welcome visitors and have (or at least had when I was
there) easy to difficult excursions. Cheers.

I will be working on a project in Santa Marta, Colombia
during the summer. To get some new sightings and a bit of vacation I decided to go by Bus from Caracas to Santa Marta via Maracaibo-Maicao. My problem is that I just found out that I will have to bring with me a laptop and some other expensive gear. Have anyone any experiences, bad or good, with the safety on buses etc. Robberies, thefts of cargo, unsafe busstations?? in this area? If it is a really stupid idea to do this trip, what would be the safest way to do go?
Thanks!!!

I've just read through all of the posts (whew!) and got some
great advice but I still have some questions about taking a
Peruvian jungle trip. My boyfriend and I are going to Peru
in November and would like to spend 4-7 days in the
rainforest. Our primary interests are seeing wildlife and
hiking (more adventure & less relaxation).
1) Would you recommend the area around Iquitos or Puerto
Maldonado? Why? (or is Manu really worth the extra money,
because otherwise it's beyond my budget?)
2) Can you suggest specific lodges or tour companies? Should
we book in advance or show up at their door? We're on a
student budget but this is the part of the trip that we're
willing to spend a little more on.
I'd love to hear about some personal experiences!

has anyone done it and could recomend where would be a good

Some questions on money please during travel in Bolivia,
Peru and Brazil.
1)I will be taking American Express travellers cheques, USD
cash, and a Visa credit card ( with money in my account).
Any comments on preferred options etc?
2)Is it better/easier to trnsact business in the above
countries in USD or the local currency?. Is there a
stronger preference for USD (not being subject to
inflation)?. Is there a particular denomination which is
preferred or taboo,( eg USD20 bills or 100 bills etc) ?
3)If USD cash is the preference in (2) above, how do I
secure USD from my travellers cheques or my VISA account?.
(I have tried this in other similar countries with no
success. The banks only gave only the local currency.
I even opened a USD account in Cairo, from overseas, with
their leading bank who could not give me USD but only local
currency, in view of their exchange control regulations,
which is understandable. I was travelling out of Cairo and
needed some USD cash to be kept handy.).
Grateful for some words of wisdom/experiences.

I intend spending some time in Rio, Salvador, Iguassu and
then travelling overland/surface from Lapaz (bus)-
Cusco/Machupichu-(bus)Lima-(bus/fly?)Iquitos-(boat)-
Tabitinga-(boat)Manaus.
I may spend 4 to 6 weeks in total.
My knowledge of Spanish/Quecha/Portugese is almost nil. I
possess no language learning skills. (Three years in
Malaysia taught me to count upto three!).
I plan to travel alone. Do u think that I would survive

TRUE?

Is Colombia dangerous? As with everything, the answer is yes
and no. I have lived in Colombia for five years, several in
San Agustφn (no longer, but I go there often), and I am
European, with gringo looks. Colombia is certainly less
dangerous than Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua,
Panama, Honduras, Peru, Brazil, and even most of Ecuador.
There is a great freedom of press, with the result that all
mishaps are known very fast. And with the human tendency of
exxagerating, people give legs to the stories, so they can
walk by themselves.
Some areas of Colombia should be avoided though by the
casual tourist; look at a map:
east of the eastern mountain range, exept Leticia if you fly
in and out. The area about one third up (from the Ocean) the
Magdalena River (barrancabermeja, south of bolivar
department, part of Cesar), the area near the Panama border
(it┤s OK along both coasts), rural areas in the Guajira
peninsula (Sierra Nevada is OK), the slums of any big city.
Waht has happened to the swiss, the Britt and the Israeli is
sad, of course, let┤s hope everything turns out alright for
them, but they set themselves up for it. They were very
close to the demilitarized zone set for the proposed peace
talks, an area controlled by the guerillas; and the
paramilitary is upset that the government dimilitarized the
zone (the size of Switzerland), and threaten to eliminate
all guerilla presence. What on earth are three gringos doing
there? doesn't it seem ovious that nervous guerillas might
mistake them for cia agents?, they aren┤t used to seing
nutcakes out there!
There is some banditry on colombian roads, and many of those
bandits pretend to be guerillas, just to intimidate, and
hopefully be more convincing that it might be better to
surender all of your belongings. As a rule on unpaved roads
do not travel at night. On major highways, it does not
really matter. Vans are less subject of hijacks than regular
buses; it hurts I know, but cough up the few extra buck for
your safety; you don┤t want to hear I told you so. As an
northern Irish friend of mine puts it, you are more likely
to win the lottery than to be killed by a bomb in Belfast.
I hear stories from people who get mugged in Bogotß at night
near the hotels in the Candelaria section. Many of them
don't hesitate of spending 8.000 pesos (5-6 US$) for a beer
in the Zona Rosa, but when it comes to returning to the
hotel when all bars close, they are disgustingly cheap and
refuse to fork out the three or four bucks for a cab back to
the hotel; they rather take a bus that leaves them five
blocks or so away, and then get what they deserve, a royal
mugging.
Everybody knows you don┤t go to certain areas of all cities
if you are of a different race, especially at night. You
don┤t go to Harlem at night if you are white, nor to S.E.
Wahington D.C. Just the same you don┤t walk to Monserrate on
a week day. Well travellers do! My Mom told me when I was
two or threee years old never to accept candies from a
stranger. Countless grown up travellers accpet candies from
strangers on buses in countries they don┤t know, of which
they don┤t even speak the language, and guess what happens:
they are drugged, robbed, and then they badmouth the country
as beeing dangerous. But your Mom told you so. Blame it on
you not on the country!
I hear from Bogotanos that I┤m crazy to go to San Agustφn.
They think anybody who goes south of calle 72 is crazy! They
are about forty foreigners living in San agustφn,
representing a dozen nationalities (US, UK, F, Russia, Port,
Arg, Peru, D, CH). All but one (actually two, a
French-Guatemalan couple who own a little hotel in town)
live in the country, and all have farms. Nothing has ever
happened to any of them, in terms of guerrilla, military,
paramilitary,... allthough some of them have been robbed on
occasion.
Many tourists get killed in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, yet
nobody knows about it, journalists are not allowed to write
about it. With respect to road pirates, Guatemala is
notorious for it with about ten hijacks a day (most of them
unreported), southern Ecuador, Peru are a lot worse.
Why don┤t you hear many good thing about Colombia? There is
general statistics in consumer marketing: a satisfied
customer will tell his story to a maximum of five people, a
dissatisfied customer will tell it to at least forty people.
You hear travellers┤stories about Colombia, but when have
you heard them directly from the person who lived it? It is
always "I know somebody who bla bla bla"
Please come to Colombia and enjoy the most beautiful country
in Latin America, with some of the best people, the most
beautiful women. Also Colombians deserve a break, give them
your business. Don┤t listen to gossip. But please use the
same street smarts as at home. Most travellers become stupid
and arrogant with that feeling of immortality when they
leave home. Nobody should want to be a hero. Don┤t be so
cocky.
Now a little bit of advertizing: in Bogotß go to Platypus
Hotel, calle 16 # 2-43, Germßn is a great guy, he knows
(almost) everything about Colombia, speaks several
languages, etc. free coffee, free use of kitchen, free local
calls. In Catagena go to Hotel Viena, Popayßn go to Casa
Familiar. In San Agustφn go to Ixchel, calle 5 # 15-39,
restaurant, european football, movies, internet, great
coffee. In Pasto go to Koala Inn. In Cali, La Iguana is
definitely the place to go, Urs and Laura are great people.

My two traveling companions and I refuse to abandon our
dream of visiting Brasil in August. Yet it's doubtful
that
we'll make it on $35 a day. So, which of these
runner-ups
(Colombia or Costa Rica) will best substitute what we
think
we're going to miss in Brasil:
-- beaches, gorgeous and not too cold
-- rockin' nightspots with LOTS of dance and music
-- dress codes that don't require modesty
We're not much for trekking and we want to avoid
Disneylands, yet we're open to little adventures. We
also like to exercise our haggling muscles. Is Costa
Rica
too touristy? Is Colombia safe? Is Brasil doable at $35
a
day? Which place has more interesting cuisine?

Hello. I'm planning a cycle tour through South America in 3
months, starting in Venezuela and then heading west through
Colombia and south from there. Having read the recent
posting from the guy whose bus was held up at gunpoint and
the numerous replies saying "no, don't go to Southern
Colombia", doubts have been sown in my mind.
So, I'd like to get feedback from independent travellers
who've recently been to Colombia, plus people who currently
live there, concerning how risky they think cycle touring
through parts of the country are. How frequent are
incidents of armed hold-ups on the road? Are buses the main
target and so would cyclists be ignored? Is there a "safe"
way of getting through the south to the Ecuadorian border?
I'm not so interested in hearing of isolated incidents (eg,
"a tourist was killed on that road three months ago"),
rather general advice on the risks involved.
I don't mind taking a few chances - if I did then in three
months time I'd still be sitting here reading about other
people's plans. But I'm not into suicide missions.
By the way, if anyone is keen to join me please get in
touch - if the above hasn't scared you away already!
abrazos
Ray

I have a filter and a film question for taking pictures
at high altitude in Peru and Bolivia.
First, I have
3 filters each for my 2 lens. A warming, UV and a
polarizer. Any suggestions as to which one to use at
high altitude? I've done some research on some photography
web sites and haven't found any information. If I use
more than one filter there is a drop in quality and I
also start to get vignetting (black around the edges) on
the film. If I only can use one, which one should I use?
Second question is, I plan on taking Fuji velvia slide film
(ISO 50) for high altitude landscape photography. Any
comments or other recommendations on film types?
Thanks
Mark

CATCH ONE ON A SATURDAY, THERE IS NO CLEAR INFO ON WHEN THEY
RUN. THE ROOF SOUNDS TEMPTING BUT A LITTLE PRECARIOUS. THIS
MAY BE A LAME QUESTION, BUT WHERE DO YOU KEEP YOUR STUFF? I
ASSUME WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES, IS THERE ROOM ON THE ROOF? I
REALLY WANT TO TAKE THIS SIDE TRIP, BUT EVERYONE I KNOW HAS
LOOKED AT ME LIKE I AM A LOON WHEN I TRY TO DESCRIBE IT,
ESPECIALLY THE ROOF PART. THE FIRST HALF OF THE TRIP IS
WITH FRIENDS AND WILL NOT BE VERY DARING. THIS IS THE PART
IN WHICH I STRIKE OUT ON MY OWN AND DO A BIT OF TRAVELING
FOR THE FIRST TIME ON MY OWN. ANY THOUGHTS OR ADVICE FOR A
WOMAN WITH BASIC SPANISH SKILLS, TRAVELING THIS ROAD, OR
TRACK, ALONE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS.

Another rookie looking for advice....... I'm heading to
Ecuador-Peru-Blovia for six weeks. My airfare to SA and
Ecuador-Peru is paid for. I am on a tight budget (about
$800 USD.) Can I do this comfortably? Is my credit card
going to take a beating? I'm not planning on doing anything
expensive, but an ocasional up-grade on trains and busses
etc, might be nice. I'd love to hear what others have spent
while doing this circuit. I have found the LP section on
money helpful but not always accurate. My goal is to have
fun and learn, not to see how cheaply I can travel. Thanks
a million.

Hello folks out there, can anybody help me? I need to know,
if it's really really necessary to carry a sleeping bag with
me for a region like Salar de Uyuni or for a night's ride on
a train or truck through the Altiplano. Will thermal
underwear, a warm fleecejacket and trousers you use for
skiing also do? I don't want to carry much gear, so I really
need to know what I should bring with me at least. Thanks
for your help. Bye, Manuela

I've been looking for flights to Australia from Dublin (or
London) with a stopover in South America (preferably Peru
surfacing Santiago de Chile). The best I have seen is 550
sterling in and out of Buenos Aires where I had not really
intended on going. My plan was Peru/Bolivia/Chile so I had
hoped to fly into one of these countries and out of
another. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Sounds a bit of a strange dilemma, but I'm not getting any
nearer my decision the more I read about the two !
We have 2.5 weeks and its our honeymoon, so we want to
combne a bit of relaxation for 2 or 3 days to recover plus
some serious getting to know the country ... trekking /
culture etc.
Loves: Great scenery, great food, not too much hassle and
a mixture of energetic activities plus some decent chilling
time ! As we've got not much time ... travel (ie hire car
/ train / bus) tips would be useful
Suggestions would be most appreciated as its getting really
late to book - going in August ! Thank you !

IÆd be really grateful for any constructive feedback on a
travel plan IÆm forming for the summer. IÆve got a really
cheap return ticket to Caracas arriving early June
departing late august, my initial plans are to travel
mostly overland through Colombia and Ecuador to Peru before
flying back to Caracas. Do you think this is too much?
Obviously I donÆt want to be continually on the road, but
then again I want to make the very most of the time IÆve
got. Are there any basic flaws in this basic plan? (eg.
flight availability, border crossings etc.).
I intend to travel as light as possible, has anyone got any
tips on the bare essential clothing? Is it possible to buy
suitable clothing along the way? How about a sleeping bag?
It seems to be something of a necessity at altitude, should
I bring one or can I get one in there when needed.
Finally, I plan to keep expenses to a minimum except for
the following activities, which I imagine will be fairly
expensive: Scuba diving, mountain biking and jungle
trekking. Given my planned route where would be the best
places to do these?
All advice or suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

then to Europe from Australia in July/August. There appears
to be no way of doing this on the cheap. Soon as you include
South America in the itinary during peak season the price
goes up tp $3000 +. Any ideas on getting to SA cheaply from

I will be spending approximatley a month with them, however
I have a month spare. I really like the idea of spending 1
month on a deserted beach camping and reading, could anyone
recommend somewhere. I'm thinking the North may be best at

I just finished reading all 300 some topics and am really
impressed at the sharing of information. I have never
traveled to SA and feel that I have learned very much
"insider" info from this site. I have always dreamed of
seeing PERU and am getting my chance this summer at the
last minute, but am worried that it may be kind of late to
make some reservations. If anyone has info on:
1. How much trouble I will have making reservations for a
trip beginning mid June and lasting to the end of July?
Airfare, hotel, trekking, etc. Really interested in hiking
the Inca Trail and seeing Inti Raymi.
2. A good 45 day itinerary (outline) that will take us (2
persons) from arriving in Lima and departing from Lima? I
kind of thought Lima-Nazca-Arequipa-Cusco-Lake Titicaca-La
Paz-????(Argentina-Chili-Lima???).
3. Is $20 US/day doable and if so what are the
accommodations like for these rates?
4. I think I get the idea on the safety. Be street-smart,
avoid going out after dark, etc ... basically your normal
precautions whenever in a strange location. Can someone
explain the wire mesh inside the pack trick. Is this just
chicken wire (small mesh-type) wrapped inside the pack to
preclude someone from quickly slashing your pack and
grabbing whatever they can get ahold of?
5. I'm learning as much Spanish as I can by reference
pages, etc, but is there something on the web that is also
helpful in learning some of the basics. Also, I plan on
taking a language guide/dictionary to help ... any good
recommendations?
6. Can one arrive at a train/bus station and book a trip or
does it require early reservations?
7. What's the weather like during this time of year (June-
July). Recommended clothing for various altitudes.
Thanks to all for any info and any other ideas you might
give to a first-time traveler to this area.

The German owners (a hefty couple) at the Chalet Suizo in
Cartagena are rude, unpleasant, and unfriendly. sometimes
they are ok, but other times the male owner is out of
line. I recommend not patronizing his services. Aside
from an poor value for his dormitory rooms (they charge $6
for dorms, whereas the other budget hotels charge $5 or
less for a private room with bath), you can get cheaper and
faster internet access with nicer and friendlier people at
the hotel vienna.

Dear travellers
We are planning a trip to Peru next July and we would appreciate the following information, which we have been unable to find so far:
1. Which are the most recent schedules for trains between Cuzco and Puente Ruinas (or Aguas Calientes)?. LP guides talk about a large variety of trains going to the ruins but only give schedules for the 6.20 am train (6:30 amfor the tourist train) daily and 1:15pm on Sundays
2. Arequipa-Puno.
We found controversial opinions about the night train (has it definitely been reduced to only twice a week?), bus (day or night? Is the road in that bad condition as described?). Is it advisable to fly?
3. Flights out or from La Paz.
Is there any air connection bewtween La Paz and Arequipa?
We found recommendations about avoid flying between La Paz and Cuzco (too expensive, not daily flights, don't save much time versus the option of riding the bus to Puno and flying out of there). We just were trying to avoid travelling twice overland between Puno-La Paz. Is it worth it doing one way through Yunguyo and the other way via Desaguadero (to visit the ruins of Tihuanaco, if it is possible to leave the backpacks somewhere safe during the visit)?
4. This question is for those familiar with the Central Highlands:
╖ LP guide mentions a daily flight between Cuzco and Ayacucho. We haven't been able to find this flight scheduled in the Aerocontinente web site provided by pro-travel. Is there only connections to Ayacucho from Lima at the moment?
╖ Train Huancayo-La Oroya-Lima. The South American Explorers Club mentions that this train is back in service, but we haven't been able to figure out the schedules. Any idea?
╖ Ayacucho-Huancavelica. LP guide reports no direct bus service, suggesting going back to Huancayo. That sounds like a long detour. Are they other alternatives? What about buses going through Lircay
╖ Due to time constraints, we may considering skipping one of these two areas: Arequipa-Colca Canyon or Central Highlands. Any advise on that decision?
5. Is it advisable to make reservations from the USA of the flights mentioned, or buy them once we get to Lima Airport (we expect to stop in Lima as less as possible). Any recommendations for reliable agents selling tickets that we can contact from here?
Thanks very much in advance
Susana. Boston MA

I've just returned from a two week stint in Southern
Colombia and want to advise people against unneccesary
travel to Colombia and especially travelling by road from
Ipiales to Popayan. Our bus, Trans Ipiales, seemed fine,
the driver was friendly and everything. Our problems
started when we left Pasto, at roughly 3 in the afternoon
our bus was stopped at a guerrilla reten (checkpoint) they
were courtious and polited but systematically divided us
into two groups, most in the former were allowed back on
the bus but the other group including me were taken off
down a track, I was roughed up quite badly and threatened
with being taken with them (I am from South London, not
exactly a tycoon type to be kidnapped) one poor soul (who
it turned out was working for the DAS - the internal
security police) was taken away and shots were heard - he
didn't return. I had my stuff ransacked and most of the
luggage on the bus was taken as well. They then slashed
the tyres and we had to wait, in a state of extreme nervous
tension until a police unit turned up a bout 6 hours later
sure that the guerrilla had gone. It was by far the worst
experience in my life, and from what I have heard from the
loacl police who intervied us that this was becoming a
common problem on most roads in Southern Colombia and that
the general security situation is horrenous at the moment
for travllers. They said that nowadays all travellers are
targeted as the guerrilla need bargaining chips for the
peace process. I would love to say to people that Colombia
is safe, the people are great and everything but I hope
people will take this as a warning and maybe think twice
before considering travel to Colombia.

Howdy!
I'm heading down South this summer and I have a question for
seasoned backpackers. Has anyone heard of a product called
PACSAFE from Outpac? It's a steel wire meshwork thing that
wraps around the pack and is designed for security. Has
anyone seen one of these in action or had experience with
one personally? It seems like a good idea, unless South
American thugs routinely carry around heavy-duty bolt
cutters. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

severe is the High Altitude Sickness? Some people advice me
to arrive Cuzco one or two days earlier before my itinerary

Hey fellow globetrotters,
We are heading to Peru in July. Can anyone recommend relatively clean, safe, and friendly places to stay (other than what's mentioned in the LP guide, or the Handbook), at the following locations: Lima, Trujillo, Pisco, Arequipa, Puno, Cuzco. Our budget is US$15 - 20 for a double.
We would also like to take a jungle tour from Puerto Maldonado. Does anyone have any recommendations on jungle lodges, and if so, what did they like about the lodge.

I'll be taking some slides this summer at various altitudes

Would anyone know their snail mail and email addresses as

Also, would anyone have other suggestions for making the
crossing short of trying to ride and hike the distance. We
