Camping Gear in Ecuador

A friend and I are planning to do a fair bit of trekking in
Ecuador and Peru and will need to buy some gear before we
do. Already got most of the equipment but will need to buy
things such as a good sleeping bag and good pair of walking
boots. Just wondering how prices in Ecuador compare to those
here in the UK because with this holiday already costing a
packet, saving wherever we can is important. Much
appreciated if any of you could get back to me with a rough
idea of prices there.
Thanks.

    ben,
i have been to equador twice (climbing cotopaxi and
chimborazo) and i must tell you that outdoor eqpt. is
very limited. as far as prices go i cant really remember
but for americans it is one of the worlds best travel
bargins. i would not expect outdoor gear to match the
bargan level of other things in the country.
tough not to enjoy equador though. its a must on all
    adventure travellers wish list.

  2. Expensive! Added by: remolacha (remolacha@netscape.net)

Anything imported is "very " expensive and all trekking
    /climbing/camping gear is imported.
although not being familiar with UK prices i can't say how
expensive..I understand Uk is one of the most expensive
    places to buy things!
You might be able to pick up used gear, you can certainly
rent some trekking and climbing gear.
Your best bet might to be mail order from North America
Have you tried MEC in Canada? Whenever I go in its full of
Brits exclaiming how cheap stuff is...

  3. Amsterdam... Added by: Mocca D

... can be cheap for many Brittish travelers, if you are to
compare prices in London/Amsterdam. Good shops here are "
Demmenie" and of course "Bever sport" (hey, what's in a
name) for all your outdoor sports gear. Been there.
    Good luck !

  4. Banos Added by: been there
[Timestamp: Sun 9 May, 5:56 Tasmanian Standard Time]

There is a shop in Banos, Tunguragua, who builds back packs
etc for a fraction of what they cost in the USA. They are a
small people so boots might be a problem.

It will probably be cheaper, but it is more a case of
whether you can get what you want...... The selection is
limited compared to what is available in Australia.
    Cheers,
    Stu
