It is a bit sketchy there, a little more than other
sections... It is very poor. I first want to say that my
experience is limited to a five day juant I took to that
area to go to the beaches at Atacames... I had a great time
there. Nice night life... Not many gringos... Though their
are very poor barios just behind the beach. Plenty of good
restuarants one Italian restuarant in particular with a
young boy that is very fluent in English that works as a
bus boy.
Anyway, the beach was great... the water was amazing...
Beach side bars decorate the beach in a rather "spring
break" fashion. It was fun, and I never felt uneasy, but I
have heard alot of stories about taking precaution in the
area.
the area is very African. Many slaves that were liberated
in Ecuador ended up occupying the region. They have
created a unique culture that is a blend of African,
Caribean and Latin style.
I had alot of fun, stayed drunk the majority of my time
there and really enjoyed everything the beach had to offer.
good time had by all...
Go check it out... just mind the sketchyness parts.

D_nice...thanks for the advice...could I ask you for some more info??? where did you stay in both esmeraldas and atacames..How much for rooms and beer? anything else would be appreciated also...
I stayed at a place called,
El Tibarone... It was nice and clean... I really don't
know what the prices are going to be now... When I was in
Atacamas it was 3,300 Sucre to the dollar on a good day,
last I heard it is around 9,000.
Suggestion... If you are traveling with a group, get a cab
from the Esmereldas to Atacamas and they will just drop you
off on the strip. It is a cool area...
El Tibarone was clean and we had no issues, it was
professional and took credit cards... We had two bunk beds
and a regular bed in our room, but I ended up sleeping on
the beach one night... (not adviced) We drank until the
sun came up, so I think it was more of a coma than sleep,
but I was with top quality people... so I didn't worry.
It is all ruthlessly cheap compared to U.S. prices... you
need anything else, contact me at d_nice73@hotmail.com
be happy to help...
