i really wonder if the people of lp
check their own page (at least sometimes...).
there have been so many ideas, reactions,
warnings, esp. for them and their books -
and: no reaction at all.
this frightens me a bit.
do they handle the letters they get the same way?
i dont expect a "team of internet-watchers by the lp"
but - no reaction at all?
comments please!!!

Yeah, and the weird thing is that if you accidentally post a message twice (or even more times), it will be corretced to only one (if you look a couple of days later).
So someone *is* watching this site.... Scary eh? I guess it's someone who doesn't speak English. He just sees two similar posts and deletes one of them.

  2. Warning Added by: Jen at Lonely Planet (info@lonelyplanet.com)

Thank you for your qeuries. We take this situation very
seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation of
    this incident.
As an interim measure we are issuing the following warning, which
will be posted through out this site.
    Warning
Lonely Planet has received several credible reports of very serious
incidents involving the drugging and rape of women tourists who've
taken guided jungle and pampas tours with independent guides around
Rurrenabaque. Contrary to what it says on pages 432 to 433 of Lonely
Planet's Bolivia guide, women tourists should not in any circumstances
take tours on their own or in pairs with independent guides, but
should stick to larger group tours run by reputable agencies. Avoid
rogue guides or those who have broken away from established agencies,
including any who may be recommended in this book.

    Jen
I see your warning about Rurrenabaque. I didn't however see
a similar warning about visiting the Chan Chan ruins at
Trujillo, Peru following the account of a rape there that
was posted numerous times on this site.
Your book warns against solo travel in the area, but as you
will know this women wasn't alone. The attitude of the
locals was similarly pathetic as that in Bolivia and again
the police seemed to be protecting the locals. This is a
serious problem in the area, and it would be great to see
the travel publications giving the local authorities a bit
    of a wake up call.
I look forward to your comments. Thanks, james

  4. The Chan Chan ruins in Peru Added by: Jen (info@lonelyplanet.com)
[Timestamp: Wed 26 May, 2:10 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Thank you for your comments, James. You bring up an
interesting point and on behalf of Lonely Planet, I'd like
to respond to it as clearly as possible:
    *
"Iamasurvior", the survivor of the Chan Chan attact,
contacted LP and expressed a desire to share her story with
her fellow travellers. LP posted her account on the the
Thorn Tree numerous times in the following months and added
an edited *warning* version to the Peru Postcards section of
    the site.
    http://www.lonelyplanet.com/letters/sam/per_pc.htm#Scam
    *
The Rurre incidents call for different action on behalf of
Lonely Planet. Allegedly, multiple attacks on women have
been perpetrated by a single individual, an individual that
LP recommends in our guidebooks. LP is conducting an
    investigation of the allegations.
    *
Please continue spread the word about dangers to travellers.
    - Jen
