Rio Hotel Reservations

Does anyone have suggestions for making hotel reservations
in Rio de Janeiro for Carnaval? I tried to book through
www.ipanema.com but after 3 weeks I still haven't received
a response. I'm interested in budget hotels. Are there
reputable travel companies in the US that specialize in
travel to Brazil? Thanks.

Sorry I can't be of much help to you. I'm planning to go
for Carnaval 2000 too and have looked into budget accom.,
but I haven't acctually tried to book anything yet. When
you got no response from the Ipanema website did you contact
a hotel directly? From what I've gathered, most are willing
to make reservations if you pay by credit card, but like I
said, I haven't tried myself yet. If you find anything out,
please let me know. Thanks. Sara.

You're best off ringing them directly, if you can
find some names of budget hotels. Let me know if I
can help, I live in Rio. Don't be too surprised if
    they can't speak English!

    Rick,
A friend and I are heading down from Vancouver to Rio for
Carnaval 2000. In terms of the most convenient location in
the Ipanema/Copacobana area would you recommend staying at
Ipanema Beach, Copacabana Beach, or Arpoador (right between
the two)? Also, do you know how much we should expect to
pay for an economy/budget room for two for the two weeks
around Carnaval? I would greatly appreciate a
response here or by e-mail. Thanks. Sara.

Expect to pay $70 US minimum for anything near Ipanema, Arpoador, Copa, or Leme. Also, you will have to give them 5 nites
rent up front for the Carnaval period. The cheapest rooms in the area are at the Toledo, Biarritz, and Martinique, all owned by
the same man. For reservations and availability, call 522-0443, in Rio. Or, if you're in the USA, call the sequence
011-55-21-522-0443. I doubt that anyone there can speak English, so you'll likely have to do it in Portuguese, but Spanish
might do it. Those hotels usually fill-up by July or so. If you get in a pinch, there's a small hotel at the far end of Copa, the
Diplomata Copocabana, run by a very nice gentleman, Alberto, who speaks English and will help you with all your needs while
there. However, the hotel ordinarilly caters to 30 minute guests, if you get my drift. It is very near a lot of girlie clubs. Alberto
will charge you about $60-70 a nite with a 5 nite minimum paid up-front. That Rio phone number is: 568-7803 and use the
same prefixes above if from the USA. Good luck. Wish I were going this year. Maybe ------.

I am surprised; keep trying with ipanema.com. I just
returned from Rio having used them and found them very
efficient; they got me an oceanfront room at the California
Othon for R$ 76 plus 15% tax; paying direct at the hotel
would have been R$ 126 plus tax. You can always 'phone
them- ask for Andre, who speaks English.
I would also suggest the Hotel Martinique, where I have
stayed before. Right now, a single room is R$64, but I
think it goes down to R$54 a night if you spend 3 nights or
more, and includes good breakfast. There are cheaper rooms
too. Telephone number in LP. Of course, everything will
    shoot up for Carnaval.

Wow, looks like you got a lot of useful responses.
Copacabana, Ipanema, Arpoador - they're all just as
convenient and not far from each other, and there
are plenty of public buses getting around so you
can always find a way of getting to the metro in
Copacabana, which is the easiest way of getting to
    the Sambadrome.
Sorry, because I live here I have very little idea
of what the prices are for hotels.
Have a good trip, I certainly enjoyed my time in
    Vancouver last year.
