Anyone out there who can offer some advice about long term
stay in Ecuador? i'm planning to leave in june to spend at
least 9 months in ecuador doing environmental work. i've
been told by the consulate here that i cannot enter the
country with an entry permit and then get a visa for the
next number of months, even if i leave the country and come
back in. i have all of the necessary paperwork for a visa
beginning in september, but no organization yet to formally
sponsor me for the first three months, during which i'll be
travelling and helping a friend out with some research. is
it really impossible to get a visa if one enters with a
permit? any suggestions on the whole visa process? thanks
in advance.... :)

  1. Get a visa in advance Added by: simone

Please get a visa before entering Ecuador!!! I just returned
from a three month stay (without visa). When I was entering
Ecuador I didn't plan to stay for more than 90 days, but
being there they offered me a job at the university. I tried
to get a visa while being there, but the only way of getting
one is in your home country (so I am back home again now). I
went to Peru and Bolivia afterwards but also in this
    countries you won't succeed.

    Hello,
I went to Ecuador knowing that I would be working with an
environmental org for an indefinite amount of time. My
advice is to go as a tourist, ask for the full 90 days at
the border when you enter. I did this and then once I was
positioned in the Amazon with my org, the prez of the org
(it was a two man show) helped me get a visa. It was easy.
I had to leave the country (went to Peru..just across the
border) to the Ecuadoran consulate in Peru where they gave
    me my visa.
I would HIGHLY recommend that you know what you need to know
about ANY organization you plan to work with. The one I
ended up working with turned out to be quite unethical.
This is why I suggest going as a tourist..that way, if it
doesn't quite turn out like you had planned, you don't owe
anybody anything and are free to go on your merry way
without having your visa hanging over your head. Ecuador is
a lovely country, but the work ethic is different. I
learned the hard way, but I don't regret a thing.
    Enjoy,
    Michele
