Do you have any advise to this subject? My friend and I are
coming from La Paz and have to end up in B'aires and we are
short on time. Can anyone recommand a trip to the salt lakes
from Uyuni? Which company did you use? And finally we have
heard positive things about a trip from San Pedro, Chile.
Will it be possible to do it the other way??? We will be in
Laz primo june.
Thanks for your reply...

The Salar is a dry salt flat...long age dried up. The four
day tour out of Uyuni takes you across it..with a couple of
stops. Then you drive through the mountains..close to the
chilean border and a smoking volcano. Visit several highly
mineralized lakes with flamingos. Visit a volcanic basin with
bubbling pools of mud. Incredibly spectacular scenery. It is
a bit rough..bring all your warm clothes for at night. You
book your tour when you get to Uyuni. Several agencies all
with in 2 blocks of each other. Prices last year were $60-$70
all inclusive. Only extra charge was to rent a sleeping bag.
I used Olivos Tours. Great guide, lousy vehicle. Don't plan
on buying anything on the tour. Only a couple of small
villages. From Uyuni a train runs to Villazon..info in LP
Bolivia. That is the border crossing with Argentina. From the
border its 9 hrs to Salta. From there you can fly to BA or
    take a 22 hr. bus.

  2. From San Pedro Added by: Cecilia (c_obertop@hotmail.com)

Yes, the trip can be done from San Pedro but you'll see the same things. And I've heard it's more expensive when booked in Chile.
    .
That is if you are talking about the Uyuni trip from San Pedro; there are several other tours from San Pedro, for example the one to the beautiful El Tatio Geyser field in the early morning. Spraying and fuming geysers while the outside temperature is below zero and the sun just sets... Excellent for pictures. Then there's also a tour to another slat pane near San Pedro, and one to a village, and we did a horseback riding tour in the desert.
    .
I don't know how easy or hard it is to get from Chile to Argentina in that area.

Just two weeks ago I did the trip to the salar de Uyuni.
Definitely a highlight during my four months in South
America. I booked a tour at Tonito tours, a good guide, a
good cook and a perfect vehicle. They will charge $80 for
four days. You can do the tour also from San Pedro. It will
cost about the same. Bring warm clothes for the night and
    enjoy the trip!!!!
