I've been planning a 2 week trip to Venezuela in October.
I've begun to worry recently though about the political
upheaval with Chavez reworking the constitution,
potentially dissolving the supreme court & congress, etc,
etc. I've heard conflicting opinions about how safe it is
for tourists - but none from someone who's been there very
recently. Any information on the current situation as it
relates to tourists would be very helpful.
Thanks!

i just returned from a two week trip last week. During my
trip there was a special election, which it was reported
only 30% of the people voted. There were some people
shouting about politics in the street, the same as any big
city, and i saw some political graffiti. But i don't
think there's that much political turmoil. i felt quite
safe there, safer than in Guatemala or Honduras last year.
There seemed to be fewer other turistas than i've met in
other places i've traveled and i'm not sure the reason for
that.
I was 1 month in Ven. in April and March, and the people are
not interestet in politics, cause this country saw so many
presidents and no one changed something for good. There are
really less number of tourists in Ven. but at the best
places (Merida, canaima, Puerto de Colombia,LLanos) are some.
Its not really dangerous at all, but be carefull especially
in cities (avoid walking at night in the towns). If you
are alone better take taxi.)And have an eye while you are
changeing money, (t-cheques take a long time 1-2 H.!) there
are crowds of people watching you, and some could be
robbers. There are a lot of things you should better know.
Take always your passport with you, cause policeman
are controling them. And if you forgot it they want to have
some money!! And so on...... So just open your eyes and you
don┤t have big trouble:

chris, i just got back a few hours ago and there really is
no political turmoil whatsoever as seen from the streets in
venezuela. i was there for almost two weeks before i
realised who chavez was! sure, there's a lot of political
grafiti all over, as in any country with a recent
election, but absolutely no signs of turmoil in public.
i'm sure, there must be quite a lot happening inside the
political loop in caracas, but during the time i was there
only one person talked politics with me.
