Aside from the obvious, what are the differences in peru and
Ecuador? I've got 3 weeks. In my reading I just seem to get
a beter vibe from ecuador. This seems like an odd way of
choseing, having been to neither. Anyone who has been to
both have an oppinion? Help me decide, PLEA

just got back from ecuador 2 days ago. I haven't been to
Peru to compare it to. I loved it there. The people were
nice, it was super cheap and very safe. easy to get around.
They have the Galapagos Islands (doon't miss them) and the
Andes. It does lack Incan ruins though. There are some small
sites bit nothing major. Quito is not a huge stinky town,
it's quite pleasant. The indigineous people are super
friendly and wear traditional dress. If you have specific
questions let me know.
Lived in both and love both. If this is likely to be your
only trip then I'd have to say go to Peru and see Cusco and
Macchu Pichu. Maybe Arequipa and the lake.
Ecuador...Galapogos if lots of money. Elsewise, Quito and
Otavalo, Riobamba..maybe Banos and the jungle. You won't be
dissapointed by either.
Peru is about 2-3 times as expensive as Ecuador, but with perhaps more noteworthy sites to see (as above) like Machu Picchu,
Titicaca, Huaraz, Nazca, Colca Canyon, etc. However, lil' Ecuador is SO nice, and scenic, and laidback, with better
congeniality. The Galapagos are its hallmark, but somewhat expensive. If money's important, see Ecuador. If not, see both.
I've been to both and would give Peru my vote for the same
reasons as Wayne. Peru was more expensive but I don't
recall it being 2-3 times more.
Wayne's summary of Ecuador is spot on.
I'd give Riobamba a miss if going to Ecuador except to
catch the train out of there!
Ecuador is like a friendly little brother and Peru is like a
wild, street-wise cousin. Both are wonderful..absolutely
wonderful. Ecuador is cheaper and easier to get around in.
You can easily do the entire country in three weeks (the
highlights, anyway) without having to fly anywhere. Peru is
bigger and so you would either spend most of your time in
one region of the country, spend a lot of time traveling by
bus from region to region, or spend a lot of money and
frustration flying from region to region. The food in both
is really nothing to write home about, though Ecuador has
excellent papas fritas.
Why not just flip a coin?
Thanks to all of you esp Michele- I have been trying to
figure out in my head for 2 months what you so wonderfuly
described in one sentance. I got to tell ya- i think I may
go for the street wise cousin- if i can get the $- thanks
again-
