It was in May 1998 that I spent a night there. But I can┤t
tell you more than that what is in the guide books

Matt, I too, overnighted there, but in Oct. 1998. It's an
overnight stop on the Andean bus route: Lima - Huancayo -
    Ayacucho - Andahuaylas - Cusco.
There's an interesting plaza de armas and a good Italian
restaurant nearby. The locals were friendly. That's about
it. If in Andahuaylas, do visit Ayacucho; it is 'tipico.'

I've been there twice, the last time was 2 years ago.
Andahuaylas is an interesting place for a day or a couple of
days. You can visit the big and wonderful laguna de Pacucha
(30min by combi), the archaeological site from Chankas
culture (dont remember the name, but they were the nightmare
of Incas). Go also to the thermal springs near the district
of Talavera de la Reina (15min). I got it is Ba±os de
Huaylachi. visit San Geronimo, a town opposite to Talavera
in Andahuaylas. There are some forests nearby where you can
walk around. if you are in the way to Cusco and like
trekking and scenery try to visit the Santuario nacional de
Ampay, a national park located in Abancay (6h from Andah.).
here you can see or go up the snowcapped mountain called
Ampay. With much luck you can watch the spectacled bear, a
native bear of the humid andes. This place also protects a
tree which is near to extinction an unique in the world:
intimpa. If you want more info on the route, (there are a
    lot of attractions!!) mail me
