Hi
I'm going to Mexico for 3 months in June. Does anyone have
any good tips on place to go - or not, stay, see etc - and
could I live on รบ20 a day. Any advice welcome!
Thanks
Cyra

If you get up into the Yucatan and if you are in Cancun
(shudder) I highly suggest, getting out and seeing the
ruins in the area...
Head to Chitzen Itza... I had an amazing tour in Chitzen
Itza, I will try and get the name of the tour guide we
had... He was HIGHLY educated on the topics of Toltecs,
Aztecs, Mayan culture and gave a really great tour...
See the ruins of Tolum. There is an amazing little beach
that sits at the base of the major pyramid of this ruin.
It is great and tranquil there and alot of fun... to swim
at the beaches the Mayans once occupied...
Also in Cancun... get away from that tourist stuff
immediately!!! I was actually shocked at how American it
all was... Mexican's insisting I speak English... and I
speak Spanish!!!
Go across the way to Isla Mujeres to take it all down a
nice notch... It is a great, very chill island town that
draws its tourists, but doesn't seem to escape its
tranquility... I liked it... lots of shops to check out.
that is all I know in Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula...
As for 20lbs a day? I don't know... admittedly the last
time I was there, I was staying with a friend that owned a
hotel... I was eating and sleeping for free and I got a
cheap flight... I wasn't budgeting anything... just
spending.
hope you like the suggestions.

Chiapas -- the southern most "state" of Mexico is amazingly
beautiful. San Cristobal de las Casas is the perfect blend
of colonial mexico and the mayans (with the added zest of a
revolution). I stayed at Na Bolom -- a mayan museum that
rents rooms -- and loved it. Imagine having breakfast in
the morning sitting next to a Lacandon Maya who is wearing a
tunic and carrying fleches (arrows). A day trip to San Juan
Chamula is a real highlight (go to Na Bolom and ask them
to refer you to Pepe the guide and ask Pepe for the
"shaman tour"). You can take a bus from San Cristobal to
Palenque (stay at the Mayabell campground in their A/C rooms
for way cheap and walk to the ruins). The ruins in Palenque
(and the waterfalls tucked into the rainforest around
them) leave you with a glow.
In the Yucatan I recommend getting to Coba (the largest of
the mayan sites in Mexico). There are a number of little
beach front hotels south of Playa del Carmen (Playa is fun
-- even if a bit touristy) that place you squarely in a
thatched room on the sand under the palm trees.
isn't Mexico in *north* america?
I'm basically going to reiterate what has been said with a few additions. Mexico is a gorgeous country but stay away from the tourist areas...
Playa del Carmen is way better than Cancun and a short ferry ride from great snorkling around Cozumel. Stay at Posada las Flores or Posada Papagayo.
The state of Chiapas is stunning. Highlights: Palenque, Aqua Azul (huge warm cascading falls to relax in) and if you want to go off the beaten track try to get out to Bonam Pak (ruins -be aware you must be accompanied by a Lancandon Myan)
While in Chiapas don't worry too much about the conflict down there. There are travel check stops if you are travelling by car. They will ask to see your passpor and maybe look in your car. Be polite and accomodating and all will go smoothly. Any more questions e-mail me
