I'm spending a few weeks in Argentina, flying into Buenos
Aires. Any good recommendations in northern Argentina,
especially Igauzu Falls?

Though itÆs a fair way from Buenos Aires, the North-West of
Argentina offers some absolutely spectacluar scenery. Salta
can be used as a base for trips to the Quebrada de Cafayate
& the Tren a las Nubes. Further to the north (3 hrs by bus
from Salta) is Jujuy, fro where buses can be caught to
Purmamarca (for the spectacular ôHill of the seven
coloursö) & along the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Tilcara &
Humahuaca are the towns worth seeing). The best time to
visit the Northwest is until September/October, before the
    summer rainy season.
Other sights further south are Peninsula Valdes for whale
watching etc (check the times for the Whale season),
Bariloche for winter sports & the crossing over the Andes
to Santiago in Chile (a stunning trip, direct buses from
    BA).
On the way to the northwest, the towns of Santiago del
Estero, Tucaman, Cordoba and Salta itself are worth a
visit. Grab a book & have a read about these places.

You are right about going to Iquazu Falls. The Argentina side
is nicer to stay. Try not to miss them. Nothing else like
    them on the continent.

We stayed at the youth hostel on the Brazil side - no visa
required if you don't leave the general area. It was $7.50
per night with breakfast, pool, and kitchen. Dinner was
$2.50 and worth it, lots of fresh veggies. I highly
recommend it if you don't mind a hostel. The falls on the
Argentine side are far superior because you get up close and
have many more trails. It probably is the most beautiful
place I've ever been (the weather was great, but be prepared
    for real rain).

We flew from Rio to the Iguassu Falls back in early-90 and
the money was well spent. As per the other comments,
Argentina is a much better for seeing the falls for the
reasons Paula mentioned. I've been to Victoria Falls and
Niagara and I think Iguassu is definitely the best. The
location is fabulous, more remote than Victoria Falls; and
the walking tracks on the Argentina side are really good
along the top and base of the hundred or so waterfalls. You
can also walk out along a track/bridge out over the river
to the edge of the major falls. You'll have a ball.

  5. San Juan Added by: Craig
[Timestamp: Wed 26 May, 6:54 Tasmanian Standard Time]

There are some great places around Mendoza / San Juan - Valley of the Moon, Pismanta to name a couple. The weather is great in the 'rainy' season as it's in the Andes rain shadow.
Also around salta and Jujuy as mentioned by Dave are well worth it.
