I'm flying into Quito at the end of June. I hadn't heard
that it was unsettled. I have a friend who lives in Quito
and she hasn't said anything, so I assume that it's fine.
Take US dollars, travellers cheques are best. I don't think
you can get sucres outside Ecuador. Maybe you can.
Are you travelling round Ecuador or the whole of SA? Don't
miss the Amazon jungle and the galapogos islands - VERY
expensive but worth evrey penny (apperently).

I live in Quito. There were taxi driver strikes for a few
days in March, but there was no violence and in most parts
of the city you wouldn't have known there was anything
going on. The media tends to make things look worse than
they are. Times are tough financially as the government
tries to take care of its debt/banking problems so you need
to take the usual precautions with your belongings/money,
but other than that, there's no problem at all.
