In July I'll have to go from Cuba to Puerto Rico. Prices for
flights are incredibly high, due to a change in Panama (over
US$600 one way!). Is there any other way I could make this
trip, e.g. by boat? I would be rather flexible with the
date of travel..
Any other (related) suggestions (cheap accomodation, must
sees, etc.) are very welcome as well!

I'm going to Cuba in July for a month and a half for
vacation and some volunteer work. Since I am moving away
from the States and have a 13" color TV set to give away, I
thought that I could take it with me for my friends in
Guantanamo as a present. Now I know that, like in the US,
the Cuban TV stations have fix channels, but I'm not sure
whether Cuba has the same system so that you can use US
TV sets in Cuba. Please help me on this one as I don't want
to carry around a 20 lb piece which no one can use. Thank
you in advance.

It's cheaper and 100% easier for me to go to Miami rather
than Cuba. What do you think? I enjoy listening to cuban
spanish and dancing to the rythem of son.

Some people seem to think that self-exiled Cubans still
cling to the fantasy of one day returning to their homeland
and attempting to reclaim land and properties which were
appropriated by the state or which the Cubans voluntarily
abandoned.

your'e all wrong !.... the problem is not the US, but the
Cuban exile's. They are the ones lined up just waiting for
castro to die, so they can flood back with all the money
they have made in the US and clean up. With the kind of
money they have they will take over Cuba. Lets wait and see
how much compassion there will be for all the families that
have had to suffer living there all these years. They are
the ones responsible for maintaining the embargo, Not
Clinton, and largly the suffering and shortages of the
people living in Cuba. The ugly American is realy an ugly
sugar growing Cuban. Why do you think there was a
reveloution in the first place?.. to get rid of the rich,
share nothing, greedy Cuban, not american. They have more
money than God, and they are very clever people. So think
about it. who is the real enemy of the poor Cubans...I
guarantee you the first "Mc Donalds" in Havana will be owned
by a Cuban American

I posted a new topic to answer your question because the
other thread was so far down the page. Regarding Jamaica,
it is possible to explore the real culture and enjoy a beach
holiday as well. One suggestion would be to book a holiday
at a resort or hotel and enjoy all the luxuries associated
with it. While you are there, talk to the employees and
other locals in the area. Many people are very willing to
show you the local villages and non-touristy places. We
have made some good friends in St. Ann that way and now
spend much of our time in the village with them rather than
at a resort...yet, we get to enjoy the beach, etc. and feel
we've had holiday when we return home. If you love the
beach, Negril may be the place for you. If you like sight
seeing and natural attractions, the north coast or Ocho Rios
area may be the way to go. Feel free to e-mail me if you
need information on specific hotels, etc. Hope this helps!

Islands not to go to and why...
Trinidad is probably the most horrific island. The water is
dirty, polluted from the oil industry and runoff from the
mighty Orinoco River... the people are friendly. But Port
of Spain was too dangerous for my wife to go to IN THE
DAYTIME alone. Trini's may argue that point but I will
always disagree.
St. Lucia - Everytime I have been to St. Lucia it has been
a nightmare. OK. This is a very subjective opinion. But
being held up at gunpoint did not help. Rodney Bay is ok,
but don't go to the local jump ups near by... it is
dangerous. Of course the pitons are spectacular in the
south. There you will find some sort of peace.
Bequia
Talk about arrogance and British bullshit - here you are. I
found them not to be friendly and and it is the tourist
hellhole of the Grenadines. Maybe living in the Tobago Cays
for two weeks altered my perspective... but really, the
place just did nothing for me. The people were rude, the
ambiance negative and we just simply did not like it here.
ANY FRENCH ISLAND (Martinique, Guadalupe etc...)
Unless you speak French you will hate it. The French can be
difficult... even in the islands. There seems to be a lot
more black white conflict too - As the French adamantly
refuse to allow any thoughts of independence for the local
populace. Though they benefit from being part of France in
many ways - there is a very evident pecking order in terms
of melanin. White=money. Ugly but true and the bane of many
islands in the Caribbean.
St. Martin
Ths is where I live. I hate it. But there is work here.
Simple. It is a crazy place full of the ugliest form of
tourism - timeshare. yuk. And no to mention the garbage,
pollution, lack of vegetation, surplus of casinos... etc.
Unless you want to work don't come here.

it sounds like many of you anticubans are Latinamericans
living off your life under the baton of uncle sam! That's
ok...but stop criticizing the Cubans...If there is a country
and its people at the present time who are accepted and
admired by the whole world, this is Cuba and the
cubans...The rest of the hispanic world is having a hard
time emigrating in Europe or USA, where they do not seem to
be quite welcome,as I should say...the cubans...Maybe those
hispanics should do something a bit better to get much
acceptance...After all, most things and people we criticize
and judge is because we want to be like them...And this is
ok too! Ciao and Viva Cuba, the greatest Latin american
country in the world!

Hi!
Hoping to spend a week hanging out in a cabana on some
remote beach (although not so remote that we can't find a
restaurant or other amenity, if the urge strikes). The
other criterion is that it needs to be fairly close to a
good diving school (we'd like to learn and get our
certification), and incredible dive sites.

To all the Cuban experts out there and I say this with all
due respect, help me! Where can I obtain tapes, CDs, or
even movies of the radio/televison series that was popular
back in Cuba. I think the program was called "El tremendo
juez" with Nananina and others. A few years back I heard
it on a radio program in Costa Rica and really enjoyed it.
If you can help me I would really appreciate it. I'll
even buy you a few copies!

Greetings All
Heading off to Barbados in June for the usual 2 weeks (plus
brothers wedding!). LP Eastern Carribean lists a place in
Bridgetown called Angle House (Upper Bay St) for $12.50 USD
a night. I'm wondering if anyone can comment on this
particular place? Good, bad, don't even think of going
there??? The price sounds good, but then again... too good
to be true?
And/or can anyone recommend any inexpensive places to stay
on the south or west coasts? I'm not looking for full-on
hotels with pools etc, just somewhere safe and clean to
sleep. Places with other backpackers would be cool.
What about good places to party? Any clubs i would be mad to
miss? And are there any particular places
backpackers hang-out at?
And lastly, i'm thinking of island hoping to at least one
other island... anyone done this recently? Problems? Costs?
Where should i go? Fly? Ferry boat?
Basically i'm looking for all the info i can possibly find.

Hi. Has anyone had success calling Cuba from the US
lately? I haven't been able to get through since the
connections were cut, but I understand there are ways to
circumvent the American lines. If anyone knows how to do
this, I'd be grateful for your input. Thanks.

My name is Gerry and I live in Vancouver, CANADA. I am
coordinating the 1999 Canadian Volunteer Work Brigade
"Ernesto Che Guevara" which will travel to Cuba for three
this summer. Help repair a play area and toy library in a
children's day-care centre in Ciego de Avila (central Cuba),
and camp in Cayo Coco (an island key north of Ciego de
Avila). While you work and have fun you will get to know
Cuba and have the experience of your life.

I'm trying to find out if it is true that young Cubans are
getting fined for interacting with tourists. A Cuban
college student told me that his friend was fined $1,300 for
being seen with his European girlfriend. The police assumed
that he was hustling her and fined him. Apparently she paid
the fine. Does anyone have facts on whether this kind of
fine is really happening and under what circumstances ? Is
there a way to register legally as boyfriend/girlfriend - or
is a declaration to the government a bad idea ? I'm
concerned about having these problems with my Cuban friends
when I visit there. I was stopped twice with a friend in
Havana, even though we were holding hands. Do the police
keep a record of someone's Identity Card number and then
accuse them of hustling tourists at a later time ? This is
what concerns my Cuban friend - he says that he will not
walk in public with me anymore. Looks like the repression
is getting worse, but it is hard to distinguish fact from
rumor with so much paranoia bei

Diago, I just got "Buena Vista Social Club" in the mail
today via amazon.com and it sounds great (I haven't
listened to the entire CD yet). I didn't listen to tons of
music in Cuba, but listening to this kind of music takes me
back.
The head guy of this CD comprised of many artists is like
in his 80's I think. Also, it's interesting to see Ry
Cooder involved.

I dont know if this is the time or the place, but i really
need to get something off my chest. I just returned from a
two week vacation in Cuba. I spent time in Havana,
Cienfuegos, and Santa Clara. I understand that this is not
the entire island, but I feel like I got a genuine feel of
how things worked. I didnt travel to Cuba for the sun or
sex. I wanted to see the people and culture. I have heard
so much from this site about the friendly people and warm
hearts. What I found was quite different. While the people
I met were friendly, it seems like they were always ithcing
for me to give them something. At every Casa Particular,
the home owners would show me things given to them by their
former western guests. Hats, shoes, and wathces were the
norm. I felt pressured and uneasy. I couldnt go out to eat
without a "hanger on." It didnt matter if it was a taxi
driver or just someone on the steet whom I had asked
directions. I somehow got the feeling that everyone felt
that I owed them something. I didnt know if any of you had
experienced this side of Cuba or not. I, for one, did not
like it. This was my first trip to a Latin America country
and I can honestly say it will be my last. Africa, my home
away from home, is much poorer than Cuba and no one feels
they are owed anything. Maybe in Africa (Kenya, Mozambique,
and Namibia) I look less like a tourist and am more savy to
the ways. I dont know, I just didnt like feeling like I had
to feed the entire island of Cuba. Let Fidel do it, its his
bloody place. Ok, enough of that. I did enjoy the
country side and oddly enough the Cristal(sp) beer. Other
than that, I think Cuba is a lost cause. I would like to
think what all of you think.

I've made 4 trips to Cuba in the past year. I've dived the
reef off Varadero and I've dived a wall in the bay of pigs
(4 times) and the celote as well as Culeta Buena (lagoon).
But because of the widespread nature of diving in Cuba (and
minimal info in guidebooks) I have a lot of questions. 1)
diving the Soviet warship off Varadero 2)Dive tour
operators, 3)other dive sites; and 4)Cave diving
1)I've seen photos of divers on the warship (hanging off
the rockets etc.) Any body dive this and have some info?
Name of ship, depth, etc.
2)Any good tour operators for SCUBA out of Canada or Mexico?
3)Anybody Dive Caya Largo and/or Isle de Juventud?
4)how is the cave diving? are the Cubans technically
proficient and safe. Location of caves?
Specific answers please, not "I dived Cuba and it was cool"
as I already know that. :)

We (me and my wife)have decided to go to the Caribbean in
November for a couple of weeks.
I fancy doing some diving and taking in the relaxed culture
over a few easy drinks and chilled out evenings.
I know November is not the best time of the year to go so
bearing that in mind what do you think would be the best
Island to go for. We fancy a bit of comfort but not a
tourist mecca if you know what I mean.

I dont know how many of you saw the Sunday morning program
about Cuba, but I for one have mixed reviews. The stuff on
Hemingway was very interesting. There were some things that
I did not know. I got to see some buddies give interviews
in Marina Hemingway, yadda yadda yadda... The part that
really bothered me was that the CBS did a piece on this
Rumba group from Matanzas. I knew something was fishy when
the groups' members were wearing American baseball caps,
Nike shoes, and Nike spandex body suits. The group had
toured extensively in the US and Europe and the influence
was obvious. I just wish CBS would have focused more on the
REAL people of Cuba who play Rumba in the back-allys with
old barrels and boards. This is the soul of Cuba. There
were some other obvious staged scenes, but on the whole I
like the piece, especially the videography. Things are
really changing quickly, so I would recommend for everyone
to GO NOW!!!

Can anyone give me a rundown on the camping situation in
Cuba, especially the south west/east and south coastal
areas. any information would be useful-will small hotels
let me pitch a tent/ campsites? Also.. does anybody know if

My wife and I, both seasoned travelers, are planning a one
month tour of the Caribbean during July. Just wondering if
any of the Criuse Lines take walk/ons on a "transportation
only" basis. We want to visit 8-10 islands and spend an
average of 3 days on each island. I know that Liat has an
Airpass. Is Miami and the Bahamas serviced by them? We are
coming from Paris and a return trip to Miami is $200.
cheaper than a flight to any Caribbean island.
The 6 hour port call is not a concept that we relish or
embrace but we understand the food is great and the liners
are fast......
How strict are the checks on returning passengers? Could I
get us on board with my International Press Pass? And if we
sneak on....any problems getting off? Where are the best
places to hang out on board, once we are stowaways?
Also, we need cheap sleeps on land and don't mind mildly
primative accomodation..IE. $25-50 per night. Any hot tips?
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of days ago, I posted a question about a good place
in Havana to meet my sister, thank you expeditor, Hugo and
Diago for your answers! Now it turns out that she will
first sail to Santiago de Cuba and then a week later to
Havana. I would like to meet up with my sister in Santiago
so now I wonder if anyone knows which would be the best way
to get there, how much it would cost and also; do you know
any cheap hotels?

PablO the mental case is still polluting the internet with

to him, I will respond to those who are tired of his coarse,
immature attempts to get attention. He is probably not
getting attention at the elementary school which he attends,
so he goes home, plays on the computer, and attempts to
elicit a reaction from those on the internet. Ignoring him
is the best policy.
He seems to have the same hostile, coarse, vulgar mentality
of the two high school boys in Colorado, Eric Harris and
Dylan Klebold. Perhaps when he grows up he will attempt to
emulate them.
It would be appropriate if the authorities would analyze the
poisoninous remarks in his posts and perhaps have his server

If your thinking about go someway to just to enjoy yourself
then you should go to Nassau. There are alot of thinging to
go, and the night life is great. There the Zoo a night club
that most Bahamain enjoy themself at, and these many more
but in order for you to find out for yourself! Then you need
to visit Nassau Bahamas.

Hola mis amigos y amigas,
For all of you able to watch Amercian television, this
Sunday there will be an hour and a half special on Cuba,
Papa, Rumba, etc. It will be on the television show "CBS
THIS MORNING." I have heard lots of good things about this
piece and feel it could be quite interesting. The one
drawback I could possibly forsee is that the CBS
correspondent only spent three days in Cuba. I dont know
exactly how he could report accurately after only three
days. The other side is that "CBS THIS MORNING" isnt
really a hard hitting news show. It instead shows the life
of common people and out of the way places. Well anyway,
just wanted to let all of you know about it.

I am a Dutch Canadian who has spent 12 years working in the
Caribbean in between travelling all parts of the globe. If
yo want advice on working in this part of the world (and
there is a lot of work in high season) email me. I want to
give something back to the dreams that carried me here. I
have found that one can do things down here that they never
would have thought they would do anywhere. For example, I
htiched a ride on a sailboat ten years ago to Europe. Now I
am living on my own... dreaming of sailing to the Pacific.

I will be going to Havana in two weeks. My sister will be
sailing there but she doesn't know when she will arrive. I
wonder if anyone has a suggestion of a good spot to meet,
such as a cafΘ or a park or some other place where it would
be OK to spend about an hour every day.
Another question; isn't there any internet cafΘs in Cuba? I
have been searching the web, but I haven't found a single
one.

Two of we mature (but travel-experienced) couples are making plans for a trip to the Caribbean area next January.
A very preliminary schedule calls for about 3 weeks in Venezuela, 4 weeks in the Caribbean starting in Trinidad and then working our way north, and the final 3 weeks in Puerto Rico/environs.
We're excited about the jorney, but concerned about the high season prices for everything we see in the travel guides, especially in comparison to the SE Asia and Central
American trips we've taken. Even the LP has relatively few budget suggestions . . .
With apologies for the clearly wide open question, we would really appreciate any suggestions from readers
for Venezuela, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico. Especially helpful would be recommendations for budget accomodations and "don't miss" places/islands en route.

Help! I'm getting conflicting info. on travelling to Cuba.
Questions: What's the easiest/cheapest place to fly to
Havana from in the Carribean? Nassau? Puerto Domingo? Got
an e-mail address for the travel agent selling the tickets?
How hard / expensive is it to travel around in Cuba via bus
or train? Are cheap ($5 to $20) accomodations easily
available in November? What can I expect to drop a day?
Any insights on where to go, what to avoid, cool stuff you
did, SCUBA, or anything else? Thanks!
By the way, the latest Lonely Planet on Cuba wasn't in the
bookstore yet, so I bought the Carribean Handbook instead.
I've been using Lonely Planets for over ten years, and I
guess I'm just use to them, because I didn't like the
Handbook at all. It wasn't really helpful in answering "the
basics".

I have 3 week of vacation coming up and I intend to spend it learning dancing in Cuba. Can anyone suggest Names, cost, tel#, location of any place I can look into? I've been to Havana several times and would prefer spent my time elsewhere this time. If the facility is available only in Havana, then I'll go along with it.
I am 32, slim, male, speak enuf spanish, and atheletic, I've taken ballroom dancing so I have some coordination. I don't expect to impress anyone, just would like to be not embarass by the end of my 3 weeks. Any suggestion?

We are two women40+ travelling to Cuba January or February
next year. Is there anyone out there who can advise on the
possibility of going independently of tour operators. How
easy is booking accommodation ? How easy to eat reasonably
well? How easy is travel around the Island ? Or can
someone recommend a tour operator who doesn't include
Varedero in the itinerary. We would like to see as much of
the Island as possible without being on the road the whole
time. Also one of us is an avid bird watcher and we would
like information about specialist trips either a few hours
or a couple of days,and whether or not they have to be pre-
booked. We have read most of the available brochures and
can't find what we want.WE have only two weeks from work
for this trip and really want to get it right. Many thanks

How about fines for buying Cuban products? According to the
New York Post, the feds have just charged (August 1998) four
rich businessmen with illegally buying Cuban cigars in
violation of the Trading With the enemy Act. All face up to
10 years in prison. These hardened criminals were charged
following a federal undercover investigation.
" A taste for Cuban cigars ended up forcing four wealty,
high-powered executives to surrender yesterday to federal
authorities - who say the men blew up to $1,200 a month on
the smuggled stogies.
Edward Marron, Laurence Zimmerman, John Steinhardt adn
Kenneth Joseph were charged in Manhattan federal court with
violating the Trading With the Enemy Act by buying the
coveted cheroots from a woman smuggler-turned-informant."
Do a search on those four if you have further interest.
"Zimmerman was tape-recorded on July 30 buying 42 Boliver
Corona Gigante cigars....
Steinhart, Chase Manhattan's head of U.S. securities,
shelled out....(for) such banned brands as Cohiba Lanceros
and Montecristo No. 1 and 2, the complaint charges."
Some foreigners have advised U.S. citizens through posts on
The Lonelyplanet Thorntree to just ignore letters from the
Treasury Department. They seem to know EXACTLY what the U.S.
government CAN and CANNOT do! I don't know what U.S.
citizens would do if we didn't have foreigners like Bob to
tell us what our government is able to do to us.
Be sure to listen to Bob and our neighbor to the north,
Jean! They have great advice! Look back through this entire
thread to see the trend of their thinking.

We are both young women who want to fully experience a different culture, but are worried about our safety. I'm still looking for evidence that any US tourist has ever
paid a fine for visiting/spending money in Cuba. It seems
some have received intimidatory letters threatening them
with a fine. But nobody yet, to my knowledge, has had to pay
a fine. It seems the best policy is to ignore these letters
if you get them. It would seem that it is all US government
intimidation.

HEY EVERYONE, my girlfriend and i are planning a trip late 08/99 or 02/00. looking for someplace tropical/caribbean with great beach, natural beauty, delicious food, and STRONG drinks! i want to swim, fish, relax, watersports, horseback, etc. She wants tan. lives. We are considering relocating and taking our capital
to build a business, which business would in fact employ a
number of locals. We have extensive managerial experience
in the hospitality industry, legal services (paralegals) and
related business holdings. Following extensive research on
St. Martins/Sint Maarten we realized that this was probably
ideal for us as we both have French as a second language and
come from a bi-lingual country/culture.
Could anyone provide some suggestions for the best sources
information for business immigration and ultimate
eligibility for citizenship? Complete contact information

appreciated. Obviously issues such as permits, licensing

I'm 27 y.o. and I'm planning to go next july to some
carribean island (could be San Andres, Puerto Rico, Rep.
Dominicana or the one that you think is OK) with lots of
palms, white beaches and a nice see (everybody┤s dream!).
My idea is to stay one or two month, but working in some
bar, hotel, etc, that I can earn money just to live as well
as have a lot of fun (parties, meet people, etc.)
Does anybody knows where to work and at the same time enjoy
a very funny experience?

Recently back from a diving holiday in Cuba.
Stayed first week at Faro de Luna, south coast near
Cienfuegos. Friendly small hotel, mostly catering for
package tourists on two or three-day south coast stop-
overs, but not at all "resorty". Great (very cheap)
cocktails. Dive centre was excellent, run by a great guy
called Felix from Barcelona, Spain. Two small hard boats,
all dive sites within 10 minutes of base, almost all buoyed
to protect the reef. A variety of scenic shallow coral
gardens, wrecks (sunk for divers) in the 15-22 metre range
and deep walls. Limited pelagic life but plenty of reef
fish and amazing coral and particularly sponge cover. Most
days there were just three divers on the boat, with a guide
each! (But they didn't hassle us underwater - just followed
us around.) Also great snorkelling in the mangroves from
the shore. A paradise for u/w photographers. Sea
temperature about 26C, viz generally 20m+. Highly
recommended. There's also a sandy beach for non-divers. But
not much else nearby. Very tranquil.
Intended to spend the second week at the famous "Colony" on
the Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth). We managed one
day's diving before leaving in disgust at the conduct of
the dive guide and the poor attitude of the dive centre and
hotel in general. It's a dollar factory: pump the divers
in, take their money, pump them out. Not recommended.
If you want a relaxed dive holiday in Cuba, based on our
(limited) exerience try Faro de Luna. For Brit divers
Progressive Tours (01895 624100) offer good value packages.
And no, I don't work for them...

As a female student from Germany, 20 years of age, I would
be interested in studying Film or similar in Cuba! What I`d
like to know is wether anybody can recommend or dissuade
from this idea??! Which possibilities are there for living

If you have the opportunity to travel to Cuba, try to get
your hands on as many American baseball cards as possible
before you go. If you can find cards of Cuban players (Rey
Ordonez, Livan Hernandez, etc), it's that much better. I
was in Cuba in March and brought a stack of baseball cards
along to hand out to the locals. It was a great way to
meet the average everyday Cuban. They absolutely loved
looking at all the photos. While it's not providing them
with basic necessities of life (as would medicine or
toiletries), it does bring a great amount of joy into their
lives. And for that they were always very grateful. I met
many smiling Cubans this way.

Does anyone know about flights between Montreal and Habana?
If so, would you please give me phone numbers (for travel
agents), estimated costs, and whatever details you think
useful. I just found out that I can travel between New York
and Montreal via Amtrak for $118 roundtrip! Now, I just

I am going to the virgin islands for a month this June and
am really excited, BUT, I keep on reading in all the travel
books that crime is quite prevalent. It's starting to
really bug me. Is the crime there really that bad? Is it
actually stupid to walk around at night, or rather go out

rumours that pre-booked accomodation is expensive. Please

My family and I are visiting Puerto Rico in late July. Has
anyone stayed inland? It seems all of P.R. accommodations
are near the beaches. I want to stay in a relatively simple
parador/country inn that is near the Camuy Caves/Arecibo
Observatory. We will be approaching from the south. The
cities I had in mind were Adjuntas or Utuado(central/west).

packages due to the embargo. I was told that there are
private courier companies in Miami that can do this, but I

This august I need to get away for at least two weeks. I
am going stir crazy here in Taiwan. I really like to go to
a carribean spanish speaking country to learn salsa,
menrengue or son and brush up on my spanish. I was
thinking of going with global exchange but I am on a tight
budget. I am just a working class hero with low pay.
Should I try cuba on my own or go to Santo Domingo, Panama,
Puerto Rico or Mexico? I will be flying to New York via
Los Angeles. From these two points I can connect very
easily to the spanish speaking americas. Any and all
comments are wellcomed!

Hi,
I was thinking of going on vacation somewhere in the
caribbean, and i was wondering if anyone had any info on a
story i had heard a couple of months ago, about how a scuba
operator had "miscounted" and left a couple while they were
still diving....i just wanted to know who they are so that i
can avoid them...
also, any good advice on where to go, what to see, and what
are the best places to dive?

I recently got married in Cienfuegos, Cuba. I just found
out that once my Immigration Papers have gone through in
Canada, I will have to forward, to my husband in Cuba, his
papers for Immigration.
FedEx does not deliver to Cuba. Does anyone know of a
courier system that can be used? Are they very expensive?
Any idea of delivery date?
Any help would be "greatly" appreciated.

the June issue of Cigar Aficionado magazine!!!!! The whole
magazine is dedicated to CUBA!! They have articles about:
hotels (along with prices, phone, address), buying cigars
and the best places to enjoy them, drinking rum (and the

worried about the troubles they are having. Although our
travel agent assures us the resort is safe we would still

I am a 26 year old swiss student. From the middle of
September until the middle of October, I have a one month
break. I am studying economy here in Switerland.
I would like to find a job for this one month somewhere on a

kind of job. I have a advanced suba diving certification and
I used to work in the finincal sector of a commodity trader

I'm still looking for evidence that any US tourist has ever
paid a fine for visiting/spending money in Cuba. It seems
some, especially those caught trying to bring back Cuban
cigars to the US, have received intimidatory letters
threatening them with a fine. But nobody yet, to my
knowledge, has had to pay a fine. It seems the best policy
is to ignore these letters if you get them.
It would seem that it is all US government intimidation.
They know they cannot fine you. It is all a big lie. If you,
or somebody you know, has had to pay a fine, let's hear
about it. Let's get to the truth of this now, and
end unnecessary anxiety for all decent US citizens wishing
to visit Cuba on holiday, forever.

Greetings,
I am traveling alone in cuba for about 15 days in mid may.
I am a 30 year old US citizen, flying in from Cancun.
Planning on staying in Havana for at least a few days, then
want to travel (by train maybe?) throughout the country,
visit some other major cuban cities, get some sun, and just
explore. Any suggestions regarding dealing with the travel
restrictions (my understanding is that my US passport will
suffice, and that I am to ask for it not to be stamped),
getting around by train or bus, traveling alone on a budget,
interested places to stay? I am definitely on
the adventurous side in terms of travel, but of course
budget and safety are important. I really want to extract a
unique cultural experience from my brief 15 day visit. Any
suggestions (especially on unique accomadations would be
quite helpful. Thanks.

If you are scheduled to arrive in Jamaica within the next
five days you should consider cancelling your flight until
the situation stabilizes. Currently Air Canada flights into
and out of Jamaica seem to be suspended. Arrival via
Kingston, where the worst problems are occurring, is not
advised since cross-town travel can be disrupted in places
by illegal roadblocks or roving bands of thugs who may
attempt to stop cars and demand money. The situation is very
volatile. The police have had running gunbattles in some
poorer neighbourhoods with armed criminals who are taking
advantage of civil turmoil to settle scores with the police.
There are tourists stranded at some resorts without surface
or air transportation out of the country. If the situation
does not change some hotels could very well have supply
problems soon.

I am seeking information on the long-term rental of an
automobile in Cuba (3-4 months). To do so at what Cuban car
rental agencies charge is my least desirable option. I have
plenty of information on Cuban car rental agencies.
Alternately, I was wondering if anyone knew the legal
restrictions on a foreigner purchasing an automobile, of
the "particular" variety, and driving it around down there
without a Cuban driver. Another possibility would be
shipping an automobile there from either Canada, or Mexico,
but what of local insurance requirements? I've found a
Canadian firm that will ship a car there for about $2,200
USD each way. Does this sound about right? I have no
information on Mexico other than a rumor that it might be
possible to do it out of Tampico. Any information, or
leads, on this topic is greatly appreciated.

Does the U.S. Treasury Department ever fine anyone for going
to Cuba? The common misconception is that the U. S. Office
of Foreign Assets Control, OFAC, overlooks all violations of
the economic embargo of Cuba.

Some individual U.S. citizens and a few companies have found
themselves in the uncomfortable postion of learning that
OFAC does levy fines and other penalties.
-
The Treasury Department announced on April 15 that the
fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar paid a $31,000 fine to
settle allegations that the magazine violated the economic
embargo against Cuba.
-
The alleged violations were the result of a photo shoot on
the island last year. Treasury said that Harper's paid for
meals, lodging, airfare, and other expenses such as visas,
exit fees, and lodging for ten participants on the photo
shoot.
-
Two Miami companies paid fines to settle allegations against
them of violating the embargo. Wilson Internatinl Services
paid $61,000 for record keeping violations, and C&T Charters
paid $125,000 for providing charter flights between Nassau
and Havana without a license from Treasury.

Individual U.S. citizens have felt the sting from OFAC and
have dealt with or are currently negotiating with OFAC over
charges of having gone to Cuba. A bass fisherman from Texas
is one who has faced the wrath of OFAC and has even been
written up in the Cuban newspaper Granma.

Another individual who is from the southeast claims to have
bought Cuban cigars in Nassau and attempted to return to the
U.S. with them. The cigars were confiscated, and he is
currently faced with charges from OFAC that he illegally
travelled to Cuba.

The exact number of individual U.S. citizens who have paid
fines for going to cuba is unknown. The number who are
currently facing charges is also unavailable. Those numbers
are presently being sought in the discovery process for some
active cases.

Many U.S. citizens have gone to Cuba without being fined or
prosecuted. This fact does not mean that everyone who does
go is able to do so unscathed.

If you are scheduled to arrive in Jamaica this week you are
advised that there is a potential for road travel delays
throughout the island as demonstrators stage noisy protests
against a petrol tax increase. There have been numreous road
blockages and in Montego Bay the protests devolved into
rioting and looting of the shops of downtown merchants in
the old commercial core.
Although tourists are in no way targets of the anger it
would be prudent to avoid areas where confrontations between
police and demonstrators are likely to occur.
For up to the minute situation reports the best news sources
are www.jamaicaobserver.com and www.radiojamaica.com
There should be no need to cancel any vacation plans but you
should be aware of the inconvenience you may face travelling
from the airports to your hotel or walking about in the
commercial sectors of urban areas.

my wife and me are looking for a Caribbean destination
for the next winter season (we will go from Canada).
Obviously, weÆre looking for good beaches, but we would like
to do some trekking over there as well. We are not diehard
backpackers, so weÆd prefer to go to a place where
(relatively) low prices meet a decent tourist service (I
mean clean rooms with private facilities and restaurants
where they have clean plates and cold imported beer) Can
anyone recommend a particular place, country or an island?
What about going to Central American Caribbean coast -
places like Belize, Costa Rica or something?

the prices in the local travel agents seem a bit steep .

in England . Also is it worth trying to go flight only?

that I am fed up working for 20 years with no serious

We [my husband, my son and I] have just come back from two
wonderful weeks spent in Cuba. If you want to travel
independently, I would recommend anybody coming from Canada
to book the Horizontes Fly-Flexi-drive arrangement. It
includes airfair, car rental and hotel vouchers . You find
Horizontes Hotels all over Cuba, we only had the first and
the last night booked in advance, and with the exception of
one time where the hotel was full it was never a problem
just arriving and booking two rooms. Around Santiago I
especially recommend "El Indio" on the Carretera de
Bacanao, lying on a small but wonderful beach. Although the
"El Castillo" in Baracoa is no longer a Horizontes Hotel,
they still accept their vouchers. Another nice beach resort
is "Playa Larga" on the Bay of Pigs near the National Park
of Zapata, another worthwhile visiting place. We gave a lot
of local people lifts in our car and were able to get a
good knowledge of the country with all its problems. What
would have happened if the doctor would not have arrived in
time at the Polyclinic just because of a lack of public
transport? The following items are always appreciated by the
locals: soaps and other toiletries , T-shirts, children's
clothes , ladies' underwear , pens and paper, etc. We ended

I am going to Cuba from US for a month on a work related
trip. I am single, in late twenties, very gregarious and
outgoing, and I was looking forward to this experience
(never been there), yet just dicovered this site and read
that "interaction between Cubans and foreigners has been
curtailed greatly." Does this mean that I would not be able
to socialize and meet new people, practice my Spanish in
local bars and pubs, and maybe dating (I am not talking
about so called "jineteras")? Another thing, are there
health clubs, aerobics and good gyms? I work as a model, and
I exercise six days a week so it is really important. Also,
I heard that my US credit cards will not work, how about
French and Swedish credit Cards?
I will appreciate very much if you could give me some
information. I am sorry if I will sound ignorant to
somebody, but It is better to ask than to be sorry,
originally I was going to a paradise island, but my agent
says it is a communist country and there are all sorts of
problems there. Thank you again.

Hello hello hello all.
I find it kind of weird that noone seems to mention this
resort on the various forums. It seems as though many people
havent even realized that a Club Med resort has opened in
Varadero, cuba. In fact, it is supposed to be one of Club
Med's finest resorts.I personally might be interested in
visiting this resort, so if i do, i will make sure i post a
report on the trip commenting on the place. Now, although
one can certainly obtain general info with regards to
accomadation and facilities from the various Club Med
brochures, it would great to hear from someone who has
actually stayed there. Hey, there is nothing like hearing
first hand info and comments.So, bye all, thanks to those

internship (first year of residency for physicians in the
US) in surgery (read: grueling, painful year with only one
week vacation total).
Would like: island paradise with pleanty of sun, sand and

I love Cuba and I've always wanted to go but I'm an
American.
Is there any possible legal way that I can go to Cuba?
I was thinking maybe I could get a flight from Canada to
Cuba or something like that. I was also wondering if its
possible to bring Cuban art into America.
Is Cuba save for women?

I stayed in Casa Particuliar in Trinidad that I highly
recommend. It's an old colonial home that has been in the
family for generations and is right in the heart of the old
town. The place itself is grand and has a lot of character.
I found it to be one of the pleasures in visiting Trinidad.
The family was charming and fun to talk to. I had great
meals for a very reasonable price. They have two rooms. The
one I stayed in had a private bathroom. The other room had a
lot more character, but was less private.

I am planing a 3 week stay in Jamaica in July. I have picked
out a number of small inns and guesthouses where I am
interested in staying. The question I have is how does one
make reservations at these smaller, out-of-the-way places
without having to run a large international long distance
phone bill? Are reservations necessary? Most travel agents
can't/won't make arrangments as these smaller places do not
pay commissions. I surfed the web and I have not found much
help. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I am a multi tripper to Cuba. However in the past I've only
had the tour package in Veradero and the usual tourist
peek-see in Havana/Trinidad. In other word, I was Castro's
ideal sort of visitor, but not my next time!
I've read the La Camandancia de La Plata Park is bitch of a
trail, but is the scenic worth the effort? What
providance is it in? Please note I am a former Marine turn
Army Ranger. Difficult trail sucks for me as much as anyone
but if others can leg it so can I. (I am 32 y/o and just
attend 60 days of ranger school 6 months ago; I got a kick
seeing 20 y/o studs dropping like flies. So age is not yet a
decisive factor )
Another concern is bringing my Cuban girlfriend along. It
piss me off to have my friend refused service even I'm ready
& willing to pay in dollars.(I was fine, but my friend in
Cienfuego was bar from using the dive site) This ruin an
otherwise perfect day. Can this shit happen again on trails?
My dream vacation is to watch the stars while cuddling in a
sleeping bag. Wake up to a gorgeous sunrise sipping rum w/
hot cocoa, while entwine like the helix of a DNA with my
girl. Any great mountainous area recommended? I lived a
pretty spartan lifestyle so luxury is not important. Great
view is a must. I gather camping is a lot different than
training for war(I know what to bring but profess I have no
REAL camping exp,) I'm all ears to good advice.
One last concern: I refuse to endanger my friend for hanging
with me. I met my GF in a double date and have fallen pretty
hard for her. I am willing to register her as my fiance if
this can keep her safe. Will it work? In light of recent
crackdown, is marriage the only gurantee to free her from
fear in publice w/ me? I'm not ready to go THAT far so any
advice is appreciated.
My vacation will be in July. Any guys/gals interested in
pairing up please drop me a note. I don't check this site
often so my e-mail is the best bet. Any self rightous folks
who think I'm exploiting my GF because she's Cuban please
get a life. We are all programmed by mother nature to be
attracted to member of opposite sex. If it's a sin then I
wish your mother haven't sin.

no one has mentioned how to go about purchasing an airline
ticket to Cuba (I am American). Please don't tell me I
have to buy it at the counter in Mexico City because I am
way too anal-retentive and need to plan farther ahead than
that. Can I buy it with my credit card? How have other
American done it in the past?

I`ve been hearing alot of horror stories about Cuba (theft
at gunpoint, etc). I would really like to hear from people
who have gone there. We`ll be two girls backpacking. Also,
if anyone has specific info on how to get from Florida to
Cuba, it would really be appreciated. One last question, is
it possible to get from Cuba to Yucatan by boat or is it
necessary to fly? Any info would be really appreciated!!

Sounds a stupid question to be asking you folks but you
might just be able to help me to convince my partner that

What's the food situation like. Do they have lots of
restaurants. Is it a reasonably cosmopolitan place to eat
out or is it as Communist as he is making it out to be?

beaches?

a very budget way by mailboat or other inexpensive transport
boat throughout the vast islands. Does such a system exist
and how thorough are its wanderings? How about cost? We
are interested in doing this with backpacks and a dog,

Another question, ..after my I-130 is processed does INS
let me know that it was approved and they are sending the
packet of forms to my husband in his country? And do they
send it through conventional mail or is there an option to
pay more to have them sent through DHL? My husband is in
Cuba and I have mailed him postcards over a year ago and he
has not received them, the mail system is terrible there.
Is it possible he can get this packet of forms directly
from the U.S. interest section there in Cuba instead of
waiting to receive them through the mail?

G'day, We are planning our 6 week trip in 2000. It is
difficult to obain any info on the Caribbean which is not
involved with a Cruis to islands and the like. We want to
go independently, on a budget, to one or two islands or one
nice place. We need to find information on how to go
about travelling to the islands from USA. Is there a local
airline to the islands? Is it easy to travel between the
islands without being on a cruise boat? We would
appreciate any information you can supply.

The question arises often as to which type of traveler's
check are accepted in Cuba. Most who offer a response are
aware that American Express TC's are not accepted. Most
suggest VISA or Mastercard.
Very few travelers seem to be aware that travelers check
issued by banks in the United States are acceptable. I have
encountered no problems whatsoever in cashing VISA TC's in
Havana. Perhaps they could present a problem in smaller
cities, but not in Havana. That was the situation in
1996-97-98-99.
A passport was never needed for identification. I always
used a driver's license issued by a southern state.
Identification will also be needed when purchasing with a
$50 or $100 dollar bill.
The bank or the store will also ask for your local address
and make note of it for the records. I have not seen a
guidebook to Cuba that is aware of the fact that traveler's
check issued by U.S. banks are now acceptable in Cuba.
That is a bit of misinformaiton that will take time to
correct.
The national banks in Havana will charge 2% to cash the
checks, and the international benks will charge 3%. An
example of each can be found on linea street one block apart
near the Malecon. One can also go to the bank in the Havana
Libre Hotel on avenue L.
The national bank on the corner of linea and avenue M seldom
has a line. The international bank one block further down
usually does. The tellers will ask you what denominations
you want for the bills. They will not ask whether you want
dollars or pesos. You will receive dollars, which is the
currency of choice in Cuba.
The traveler should take as much cash as he feels is safe,
and also have an ample supply of VISA or Mastercard
travelers checks.
The traveler should also be aware that the rules have
changed greatly in Cuba in recent months. Things are now
illegal which were acceptable until late in the year in
1998.
Dr. Castro made a speech in January 1999 inwhich he outlined
many of the proposed changes. These changes are referred to
in the media and on the internet as the 'crackdown in
Cuba'.
One of the most noticeable changes is that interaction by
Cubans with foreigners has been curtailed greatly. The
visitor will find that friends whom he has known for years
may now be reluctant to be seen in public with him.
The Cuban friend who happens to be a female will be
considered a jinetera (prostitute), specially if she happens
to be attractive.
The Cuban friends who are males will be considered hustlers
who may be attempting to sell cigars, find you a taxi, or
get you an apartment. Some Cubans who are young may be
considered jineteros (male prostitutes) because of their
appearance, behavior, or actions.
The proposed changes have enormous consequences for the
Cubans. Hustlers who are considered pimps are subject to a
prison sentence of up to 20 years. The death sentence has
been proposed for those found guilty of corrupting the
morals of a person under the age of 16.
The Cubans who rent an apartment without having a state
license can be subject to a fine of $1,000. The person also
risks the loss of the apartment. Repeat offenses will find
the state confiscating the apartment.
The apartment owner who allows the apartment to be used for
prostitution can also lose it. This could be a situation
inwhich the foreigner who rents the apartment returns at
night with a female without the knowledge of the owner. The
police or a member of the neighborhood watch committe could
assume it was prostitution. It would be difficult for the
owner to prove otherwise.
Any type of interaction on a personal level has been greatly
limited. Many Cubans are reluctant to risk a fine,
interrogation, or a prison sentence for talking with or
being seen with a foreigner.
These changes should be considered when making travel plans
for Cuba. The country is still a wonderful place to visit,
but the traveler who hopes to meet, talk with, visit and get
to know the locals will find his task a bit more difficult.
Such interaction can be unpleasant or even dangerous for the
Cubans.
Those who are traveling to Cuba as part of a tour group may
find the changes much for the better. The Cuban government
is promoting the changes under the guise of making Cuba
safer for the tourists.
The changes could mean fewer purse snatching, less petty
theft, and fewer hustlers wanting to sell cigars to the
tourists. It could and has had an obvious impact on the
number of females who appear to be jineteras on the street
of Havana. Apparently the same thing has happened in most
cities in Cuba.
The members of tour groups will most llikely not be pestered
as often byhustlers, panhandlers, beggers, and other
offering their services. Some will find this more to their
liking as they listen to the canned speeches of their tour
guides.
Others will long for the time when they could meet, listen
to, and talk freely with the Cubans. This becomes very
important for those doing any type of research, and even
more important for those doing any media coverage of the
country.
Cuba is a whole new ballgame, but it is still a great game!!

I'm looking to go somewhere in the Caribbean for about a
week between May and September, but I DON'T want a resort-
catered atmosphere like I hear most of the islands down
there have become. I really need great hiking, preferrably
mountainous, and snorkeling. Lotsa biodiversity, too.
Friendly locals and a laid-back atmosphere. I'm 25, so
a "young" feel would be good. I'd most likely be traveling
alone. Any ideas? I was thinking about Grenada. I don't
want someplace too crowded -- if that's possible down

I'm planning to leave Montreal Jan. 2000 to go around
Mexico for 4-5 months. I was thinking of starting in
Puerto Vallarta, going to Las Cabos and that area, go
on the west side, go around Oaxaca, Veracruz and
Bonampak. I already went to Yucatan couple times
(including Palenque, Merida, Villahermosa and Tikal in
Guat). You will understand that the mayans and aztecs
ruins just fascinated me. What should I not miss in

My 24 year old daughter (a lovely and intelligent,
professional, young woman - if I say so myself) and a
friend intend a week long vacation in the Bahamas around
April. They're all young and interested in (shock allors!)
partying, vegging on the beach, dancing ... and probably a
small bit of sightseeing and bargain shopping.
Any input, especially based on personal experience, on
best, inexpensive, reliable places to stay; places to visit,
party, bargain shop; and, even on what you've found to be
the best deals for flying to/from the Bahamas would be very
much appreciated as we try to plan and arrange a pleasant
and rewarding travel experience. Any advice on areas or
things to avoid also appreciated. She's reasonably
well-traveled, opened-minded, and urbane (for a Yank); we
lived in Melbourne, Australia for 4 years (though she was
younger), and she's adventurous enough to be excited about
learning from travel (rather than being judgemental).
