Can anyone tell me about Cabarete? Is it just for wind
surfers or is it quiet enough for a nice week's get-away for
the only sometimes adventurous?
Any good recommendations for places to stay- budget to
middle range, no noisy bars, quick access to beach?

Consider a day trip to Haiti while you are in the area. There is a fortification, "Citadele," in the north of Haiti which is worth a trip when you want a break from the beach.

  4. Cabarete Added by: Marika (paulmika@hem3.passagen.se)

Cabarete is a very nice place to just go and relax, the
beach is nice, you can do lots of other things than just
windsurf. I'd recommend a mountainbike tour (downhill if
you're as unfit as me) with Iguana Mama
    (http://www.iguanamama.com/)
I'd also recommend a one or two day tour to the Samana
    peninsula, it is absolutely beautiful.
The place we were staying at in Cabarete was very
affordable, at least for four persons, but it was great,
and the beach was just 10 metres away.
It is called Olas de Oro villas, and we had the beachfront.
It is about 10 minutes walk on the beach into town, so it's
quiet and more private than a hotel. The restaurant at
Olas De Oro, Tropicoco is one of the better ones in
    Cabarete.
The other restaurant I would really recommend is a small
place by the beach called La Casita. If you like seafood
you HAVE to go there and have their "Camarones". You won't
    be disappointed.
