Hi,
I was thinking of going on vacation somewhere in the
caribbean, and i was wondering if anyone had any info on a
story i had heard a couple of months ago, about how a scuba
operator had "miscounted" and left a couple while they were
still diving....i just wanted to know who they are so that i
can avoid them...
also, any good advice on where to go, what to see, and what
are the best places to dive?
thanks!!

The incident you mentioned occurred off the coast of
Australia over a year ago. An American couple on vacation
took a day charter diving the Barrier Reef, and were left
behind when the boat headed back to shore. They were not
noticed missing until the boat was docked. Search parties
looked for days but they were never found.
A fairly complete story of this incident can be found
at: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~diving/index.html
Go to the diving incidents section and see "Deaths of
2 American Divers".
I heard a similar story, however, it was near the Great
Barrier Reef in the South Pacific. A honeymoon couple was
forgotten in the water- all that was later found was scuba
gear. Your best bet is to book your scuba excursions through
the hotel you decide to stay in.
There are many great dive spots in the Caribbean. The Cayman
Islands, Belize and Cozumel are only a few. It just depends
on what you are looking for in a vacation. Some have more
night life....more vegetation.....some are more
commercialized. Keep looking around the net or call a travel
agent.
Went to the small island of Bimini last year and despite
getting tossed about by a hurricane had a blast. Bimini
Undersea Adventures (biminiundersea.com) was a wonderful
operation unlike the large commercial operations I have been
with before. They are small and VERY personal and in
addition to the many and varied dive sites (to include
numerous reefs and the continental shelf) offer the chance
to free-dive with wild Atlantic spotted dolphins. The staff
refuses to feed or otherwise bait the dolphins and instead
lets them (the dolphins) decide if they want to come play
with you. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS OPERATION and the
Island as a fun and affordable dive destination. Theres also
a bit of history with the island as both Ernest Hemmingways
hangout and as a former smugglers gateway to the US. Theres
also sea kyaking, snorkeling and plenty of fantastically
friendly people.
Sorry to be ignorant but where is Bimini - never heard of
it!!
