Cuba; for real this time...

I have read every post on Cuba that is currently posted and
no one has mentioned how to go about purchasing an airline
ticket to Cuba (I am American). Please don't tell me I
have to buy it at the counter in Mexico City because I am
way too anal-retentive and need to plan farther ahead than
that. Can I buy it with my credit card? How have other
American done it in the past?

you don't say where you are in the USA, but you are likely closer to a canadian gateway than to mexico city. any travel agency in canada will sell you a flight to cuba and put it on your credit card in deeply discounted ($1.50 to 1) canadian dollars. internet sources of info on these flights can be found if you ask a search engine for canada 3000 airlines, or belair travel, or sunquest vacations. beyond about mid april (i.e. now) there are fewer choices than in winter, but there is service year round.

we just got back (to Dallas) from Havana last week. We
entered through Cancun--cheap netsaver fare from Dallas.
While in cancun, we went to a few agencias de viajes and got
a deal to travel the next day to havana. Payment was by
credit card (no problems). it was a "package deal": with
air, hotel and tranp. airport to hotel. even though this
was at last minute, planning ahead would also seem to work
similarly. There are also a few internet travel agencies
    that book through Canada/Mexico.

Just CALL Mexicana Airlines in Mexico City. You won't be
able to pay for the flight from Cancun to Havana, but you
    can book it no problem.

That's what I did, but when I got into Cancun (I had to
spend the night, yuck!) I just ended up bagging the booked
flight which I would have paid for at the Cancun Airport,
and ended up buying a USD$70 cheaper flight on Cubana when
I was in Cancun. You can just go to the Cubana office
still in the airport, but across the driveway of the
terminal...no worries. If you are anal-retentive, however,
you might figure on a different island in the Caribbean in
    which to travel. Good luck.

I have gone through the Bahamas on numerous occasions (from
New York). I have used Majestic Travel (242-328-0909 - I
even have the number memorized). If you go through the
Bahamas, you can call Majestic and make the reservation with
your credit card. Once you get to the Bahamas, Majestic
Travel has vans which will take you to their office (for
free) and you can pick up your ticket. I have used them
about 4 times - no muss, no fuss.
If you prefer to go through Mexico, which might be a little
more interesting, you might want to try Mexicana
(800-531-7921). You can take their flight from Cancun.
Although I have never used them, I am planning to on my next
trip - I'm getting a little tired of the Bahamas. Anyway,
they gave me the impression that I could just pay for it
with my credit card over the phone and they would mail it to
me. Give them a call and tell us what happens.
I can appreciate being a little anal, but if you plan ahead
you should really have no problems. If you call Mexicana
before I do, tell us if that is possible. Good luck!

If you go through DF or Cancun try AeroCaribe...Found that
    they were cheaper than Mexicana.
    http://www.aerocaribe.com/habanafrm.html
you can use your credit card to purchase the ticket at the
    airport.

Aren't they virtually the same? I thought Mexicana sold the
tickets, but the flight was AeroCaribe.

Thanks for all the info. I looked on the AeroCaribe web
site and looks like they have something called a
"Mayapass," a hideous name, but you can go to multiple
destinations without having to buy a ton of round trip
tickets or paying for spendy one-way tickets - check it out!
