Sosua has an unusual WWII connection. The then dictator Trujillo offered to take in 25,000 European Jews, and 2000 or so actually did come to a former United Fruit Company banana plantation near Sosua. They established agricultural firms which continue today. Trujillo's motives were not for charity alone. He had conducted a slaughter of 35,000 Haitians and this was a bit of an exercixe in image improvement. Another tale is that his daughter was a student in Paris and said that the only people to treat her decently were the French Jews.

Consider a day trip to Haiti if possible. You will look at the Dominican Republic and everywhere else with a changed attitude after that experience. I think that you can visit the "Citadel" in northern Haiti from the north coast of the DR.
We are going to the Dominican Republic becouse we won the
trip and are very excited about it. We are aventurous
people and love to sail. We are looking for an inexpensive
way to get on a boat for a couple of days or even just a day
trip. What are some options to consider?
There are a lot of things in and around Sosua and Cabarete
to do, the easiest is to just go there and decide when you
get there.
There are everything from boat hires to diving, hiking, deep
sea fishing, wind surfing, river rafting and so on.
A very nice thing we found if you want to see the country
side close up is to go on a mountain bike tour. There is
a company based in Cabarete, rather close to Sosua, called
Iguana Mama.
They have all different levels depending on your level of
fitness. I'm not fit at all, and we went on a downhill tour
which was great. The guides are funny and knows a lot about
nature and history. The equipment is excellent, I highly
recommend it. They have a homepage at www.iguanamama.com
Also, if you are in Cabarete I must recommend this small
seafood restaurant at the beach called La Casita, order the
"Camarones", giant shrimps. It is not so expensive, and
extremely nice food...
