From the many posts on this thorn tree, you would think
that Cuba is the only place that backpackers are visiting
in the Carribean. Why is this so?

  1. Only...maybe Added by: Beachboy

Cuba is Not the only country, but now that tourism has come
to the island...I feel a bit sad about the rest of the
Caribbean...for Cuba's beaches, culture, history and
landmarks...are unique and probably some of the best on this
    side of the world...Viva Cuba!

  2. NOT THE ONLY COUNTRY Added by: Jean Pierre

I have tried Dominican Republic and Haiti and will never go
    back.
Cuba is the only country nnow in tha Caribbean, offering
decent prices aand offering much more securities than
    others.
Also most Cubans by their education, their system, have
learned to welcomee tourists and before these things
change,it may be wise to visit that country.
Ernest Hemingway was asked the same and replied well.I
    could find you is response.
    And to conclude....for it's people.
Cuba was also discovered by Christopher Colombus and as such
is a country with a rich history background.

I guess you fellows haven't heard from me much this winter
as I spent most of the cold days laying in the Cuban sun
    ..... eeh ...... eeh !!!
I guess these fellow has a point - we should ask LP if they
would give a separate area for "Cuba Only"
    viva Cuba !!!

  4. My opinion Added by: Diago
[Timestamp: Wed 19 May, 23:28 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I think the reason you see so many posts on Cuba is because
there is such a small amount of information available for
tourists looking to travel to Cuba, as compared to other
Caribbean countries. There aren't any travel agencies in
the U.S. that can do anything for you, and sometimes trying
to work through these agencies in third countries is a
little annoying. Consequently, people look to each other
    for help on visiting Cuba.

  5. I agree... Added by: Hugo

Beachboy and Diago reach to the heart of the Cuba travel
issue. One additional aspect is the appeal that the exotic
and forbidden have for many people.
Cuba is still exotic for most people, and it is forbidden
    for most U.S. citizens.
Tourism was not a formidable part of the Cuban economy until
Castro reluctantly turned to it as a source of U.S. dollars
when the subsidies dried up following the collapse of the
Soviet Union. Economists now consider Cuban tourism the
number one source of income for the country.
Journalists were not as aware of Cuba and its appeal before
the visit by the Pope in 1998. Thousands of journalists from
around the world saw Cuba and its attractions for the first
    time.
The articles which have resulted from those visits have
ignited an interest by many people who had never before
considered Cuba as a travel destination.
As was pointed out be someone earlier, safety is another big
concern for backpackers, and Cuba is very safe for these as
well as for other types of tourists.

I now have a better understanding of Cuba and why it is so
popular. Thanks to all who replied :)
