Hi. I've always wanted to go to Haiti, but can't find any recent travel info about it. Has anyone been to Haiti lately? How safe is it, and where did you go?

  1. Haiti trip Added by: Georgina

I went on a day trip to Haiti a couple of weeks ago. It was organised by Hispaniola Tours from Puerto Plata - (they do a pick up from Sosua) and visited a typical small village and school about 6 miles inland, then there was a voodoo demonstration and the opportunity to buy wood carvings etc, then we stopped in a typical market. It is a worthwhile trip with a strong contrast to the Dominican Republic - when you get to the border the roads stop and it is all dirt tracks - quite a bumpy journey - there are few trees - they are all cut down for fuel and the temperature is about 10 degrees hotter than in DR. The people are charming - obviously there is a lot of begging. It is useful to take clothes, pens, sweets etc. It is a bit like Africa with mud huts etc. The company also do a 2 day trip staying overnight which visits Cap Haitien and the Citadel. I believe you are advised not to go out at night. As for independent travel I am not sure - I would recommend this trip as you are given a lot of information. I know a guidebook I have from a few years ago advises you not to visit but I would think organised trips are definitely no problem.
