is playa del carmen worth a damn anymore? is it overrun with
big hotels and what goes along with them- do backpackers go
anymore?

   Don't bother with Playa, it's a concrete jungle full of tacky tourist crap. And yes, Tulum, is the curent in place on that coast, but go south to Belize and Guat for some culture

   My wife and I went to Playa for our honeymoon in September
   '98 and were very suprised at the amount of development in
   the area. Soon the coast from Cancun to Playa will be one
   long tourist strip.
   If it's authenticism you're looking for, pass it on by.

   Was extremely disappointed with Playa,to much
   commercialism.Tulum was impressive.
   As mentioned before by Rich if you really want landscape &
   brilliant people ......Belize is your answer. Spent several
   months there and loved it.
