Daughter's 1st Bahamas Trip-Recommend?

Gentlefolk:
My 24 year old daughter (a lovely and intelligent,
professional, young woman - if I say so myself) and a
friend intend a week long vacation in the Bahamas around
April. They're all young and interested in (shock allors!)
partying, vegging on the beach, dancing ... and probably a
small bit of sightseeing and bargain shopping.
Any input, especially based on personal experience, on
best, inexpensive, reliable places to stay; places to visit,
party, bargain shop; and, even on what you've found to be
the best deals for flying to/from the Bahamas would be very
much appreciated as we try to plan and arrange a pleasant
and rewarding travel experience. Any advice on areas or
things to avoid also appreciated. She's reasonably
well-traveled, opened-minded, and urbane (for a Yank); we
lived in Melbourne, Australia for 4 years (though she was
younger), and she's adventurous enough to be excited about
learning from travel (rather than being judgemental).
Thanks very much for your information and advice!

  1. Try the Family Islands Added by: stubborn (stubborn@hotmail.com)

I would recommend you look at the Bahamian family islands -
otherwise known as the "out islands." Andros Island is only
a 10 minute flight by Bahamas Air from Nassau. You can read
about it a little on our home page
http://www.angelfire.com/az/theredds - go to the Bahamian
Waters Page. If you follow our links on that page you'll
find out about accomodations at the Lighthouse Yacht Club
and scuba diving or snorkeling with Andros Undersea
Adventures. I think your daughter and friends might enjoy
that. Also, look at www.fernandezbayvillage.com to find out
about another family island and accomodations there. Nassau
has a resort/hotel there called Breezes which charges a flat
rate for hotel, food, drinks and fun - it's quite a great
place. Nassau is a fun town for partying, sunning, shopping
and tourist stuff, but would highly recommend folks go to
islands such as Andros Island to see how Bahamians really
live. Good luck on your search!

I have requested Lonely Planet to remove the above (#2)
response posting. It is inexcusable and revolting. Ditto
    #3. Forgive and ignore.

  5. out islands Added by: matt (mrmatt@aspeninfo.com)

Nassau and Freeport are fun however, I would recommend the
family or out islands. You will not find casinos or all
night partying but what you will find is the what the
Islands looked like before we all arrived. I highly
recommend Harbor Island. Very pretty with world class
food, chic hotles great nighlife and probably one of the
most beautiful beaches in the world.

  6. Nassau Added by: db

If in Nassau reccommend that you stay on Paradise Island. We stayed at the British Colonial near downtown and were not happy.
Found a great jazz bar downtown called "Jazz Cotton Club" (or something like that). Music was wonderful. Opened by a Canadian ex-pat from Montreal who had played piano with some of the greatest. Music was free. Atmosphere casual. Big with the locals. Cruise ship musicians dropped by to join in. Treated to a 12 piece big band.
For a (expensive) treat have dinner at Graycliff. One of the few five star restaraubts in the Carribean. Food was great. Very elegant. Beautiful courtyard.
    Enjoy

  7. THANKS ! Added by: Words_Myth

Thanks very much to the Redds, Diago, Matt, and db for
a wealth of good information, websites, and recommendations.
The trip is arranged and much anticipated. Not certain if
they'll make the mail boat run to Andros, but they have the
information, and plenty of latitude with no restrictive
"schedules." Thanks for sharing your experiences and
    expertise!
